Asmongold reacts to Ashes of Creation’s collapse, reflecting on misrepresentation, funding chaos, and the aftermath for fans and creators.

Summary

Asmongold feels the sting of Ashes of Creation’s implosion after eight years of monthly development streams. He describes how the project’s hype hinged on assurances it was self-funded with no board or shareholders, only to discover hidden investors and a complex funding reality. The disappointment isn’t just about the game disappearing; it’s about feeling misled by coverage he trusted, including his own. He mentions how the drama affected his reputation and explains why he stayed relatively positive for so long. The discussion shifts to the broader MMO landscape, the potential for future titles like Crimson Desert, and his plan to move forward with content that isn’t built on fragile promises. He references peers like Kira TV for legal coverage and jokes about a public forfeit to apologize to those who invested. Throughout, Asmongold emphasizes learning from the experience, adjusting his stance on Kickstarter and indie MMOs, and staying engaged with gaming content despite the setback. The video closes with a candid admission: the MMO scene feels bleak for now, but the channel will keep reporting on what’s worth watching, including upcoming titles like Crimson Desert and other survival-focused games.

I'm just going to be honest in this video. When I heard that Ashes of Creation was imploding at the end of January, it it sent me on a genuine depression. It really did. I didn't want to make content. I I didn't even want to cover the drama. Um yeah, it really it hit me. It's kind of like MMO players 911. Probably about Yeah, something like that. Except the towers collapsed on their own, right guys? Odd man. Ashes of Creation was the MMO that was my last hope when it comes to all the upcoming future MMOs. I liked the design of the game on paper. I liked a lot of the ideas. I gave it like just two weeks before it imploded. I gave it a five out of 10 with like potential to be like eventually a pretty good game after maybe a year or two of updates. Yeah, maybe. And this it was like part of my routine for so long like the develop the monthly development live streams. Yep. Eight years. Y of essentially checking in with it every month. and then it just rugpulls randomly. Yep. That's right. Out of nowhere. It's not really out of nowhere, honestly. Like whenever it came out on Steam and it was a flopparooi. I think that you could have easily seen the writing on the wall. Now what was the writing? It was a big fat L. It is like people could see that when I thought it had it was starting to slowly get to a decent place. Man, that that was really rough. But what was even more rough was finding out that this whole time there was indeed a board of directors. There were shareholders and there was a bunch of shady people financing the game for a very very long time. It seems people got to stop putting their feelings into a video game. Like this is my advice honestly and I'm talking to myself too. I'm not just talking to him. is that with a lot of this, like people always put their feelings into a game, just take a step back and it's like, bro, sometimes it's going to be up. It's just the way it is. When it's just a game, the main reason why I was excited for Ashes is because we was told time and time again it was funded by one guy. Yeah. And that there was no shareholders pulling the strings, right? No one else. No, no board of directors. If the game said it's not pay to win, not going to be pay to win, then it's not going to be pay to win because there's no publisher. There's no one influencing it. Mhm. That's what we was told. That was the entire reason why I was so excited of for Ashes of Creation and why I wanted to support it throughout its very long development cycle. for that to then find out that none of that was true and that it was just a massive misrepresentation. Basically, we got We got big time. Not good. I I I feel like I've been lied to. Honestly, that's one way. It feels really bad. The reason why my coverage of Ashes of Creation was like positive throughout all of the years, and I tried to remain more positive than negative is number one, I wanted the game to exist. On paper, sounds like the kind of game that I would want to play. Um, duh. So, by me covering the game positively, it increases the chance that it could maybe exist. That's that's one thing. Yeah, sure. And Sure. Number two, I thought if it's if it's being funded by one person and they're putting all their own money into it, then I'd want to support them in Exactly. But just to find out that that's not not true. Yeah. It it was a it was a real shock and it's massively damaged my reputation. It doesn't have nobody gives a Like everybody got scammed. Like we all got scammed. Everybody like the thing is we thought that it would be good. It wasn't good. It was a scam. That's what happens. because I would have covered the game completely different differently if id have known that that was the case from the start. I think that's why they didn't tell you that. Like that's the whole point. I think a lot of people that covered Ashes of Creation was very supportive and wanted to help because they thought it was like a grassroots MMO from one person be good honestly. But yeah, when it comes to the whole like lawsuit and drama stuff, yeah, um if you're not aware, like crazy the accusations that are getting thrown around in either direction. Yeah. No, it actually is insane. Like I I hope that they can live stream it. I'll watch it. Um go check out Kira TV's videos for that cuz he's done a really good job of covering it. I don't really understand legal stuff too much, so I I just watch Kira's videos. He's happy to spend time learning all that stuff. So, we've watched it before. We know that. future of MMOs. It's looking pretty bleak, isn't it? What are we looking forward to now? Chrono. Uh, we're looking forward to for MMOs. What's the MMO I'm looking forward to? Uh, Hoyverse. Uh, the people that make Ginch and Impact said that they're going to make an MMO. And so, uh, maybe we're going to have Tower of Fantasy 2. That's it. That's the only MMO that could ever be good. I'm just being honest. I'm being totally honest. Y'all say gay. Well, see, you play World of Warcraft, the Riot MMO. Yeah. Whatever happened, man. I'm going to have to do some kind of forfeit to apologize to you guys, the ones that spent money on Ashes of Creation, even though I did say it's not in a state where you should spend money on IT YET. OH GOD. I will do a I will do a forfeit. Oh, bro. You're going to spend more time apologizing than Steven. What are you doing? Those of you that have spent money on it from watching my videos, guys. I will do a Muay Thai fight in two or three months. As punishment for That's funny. Maybe you could maybe you'll feel better seeing me get punched a few times if you've spent some money on the game and you feel like you've gotten wrecked. I feel like I've gotten wrecked. spent I actually spent thousands. Wow. on that game. Um like a lot of the pre-order stuff I bought like the cosmetics. And just so just so this is clear, no content creator ever received any money from Intrepid or Ashes. Not how convenient. Not Not a single penny. Yes, it had its referral system, but that was only ever going to pay out if the game fully released. That's what that's what was said from day one. So, no one no one actually got paid. And I'm sure people won't believe me because no one no one ever believes me, but that information will probably come out. This is really, Dude, this game has got him down bad. Bro, this game has got him down bad. Oh my god, this is brutal. in the court hearings when they disclose all the financial imagine like now he probably got excited for Crimson Desert too. I'm sure that is something that would be disclosed if it happened. So over Yeah, I can confidently say no one received any money. Uhhuh. It seems like just everyone involved in the whole thing lost money. Yeah, the investors lost money. The players lost money. I think Steven lost money. I think everyone just lost money. It was just a a It was a mismanaged, badly funded project that they didn't plan for and they just up. Like, it's really not that complicated. Like, everybody thought it was going to be good and it wasn't. Like, you know, Remember that that ship, the Concordia that was like sideways in the water? I mean, that's the biggest one of the biggest ships ever. Somebody can you can still something really big up. you can that went eight to nine years maybe 10 years into development. And it just never saw the light of day. What a mess. You say now honestly this video is awful to make I feel so embarrassed having to make this video. I don't I feel unbelievably I didn't ashamed of myself. Jesus. And I was going to just like there are people that have been charged for like sexual assault that do YouTube apologies that are less apologetic than Lazy Peon is for promoting Ashes of Creation. Maybe quit YouTube, but I like making videos. I don't want to quit YouTube. What are you doing? I don't want to quit YouTube because of something that was out of my control and from something that I didn't have any information of. How could I have possibly known? What are you talking about? That this game had all of this going on behind the scenes. I think any reasonable person uh can see that. But I look like a massive clown. Okay. And I'm just going to have to take an L for my coverage of this game throughout its entire existence. I guess it's sad because yeah, I wanted it to exist and I thought it had potential, but everybody wanted it to be it just wasn't. On to the next one. Uh, I'm not going to stop doing YouTube because I do like making videos. Yeah. Yeah. What a surprise. Crimson Desert coming out tomorrow. Jesus, bro, bro. Is he okay? I I just Oh my god. This is Jesus, guys. So, that's that should hopefully be good. It's weird, man. Like all of the MMOs that MMOs, all of the games that I've been enjoying recently and looking forward to, they're either survival games or like survival RPGs or they're single player games or you've got uh old school Runescape, right, which I still love and I'm hopefully going to be maxing my Iron Man this year. So, still making progress progress with Yeah. Uh, man, that's What else? What else is there to say? It's sad. It's actually sad. It was really hard to stay pos to try and stay positive throughout the uh the development cycle of Ashes of Creation. There were times where like everyone was negative about the game. To be fair, I always said that that there is definitely justifiable reasons for the negativity, but I tried to I tried my hardest to remain positive because I thought that being negative just like for the sake of being negative wouldn't help me get what I want in the game to exist essentially. Do you remember that clip? I was trying to find it. I couldn't find it. The They hate it. What are we gonna do? We spent $400 million on this. Here's the thing, man, is that you thought it was going to be good and the alpha came out and it was not good. It was so bad. It sucked a big fat dick. And it was like it like I mean we waited years and years and years for this and it finally releases and it was just like are you kidding me? Didn't you have hope? I have divorced myself from emotional connections to the outcome of a video game. And to be fair, I still do get mad sometimes, but I have tried my best to just simply view video games. It's a video game. Oh, it came out. Man, I was really looking forward to this. It sucks. Damn it, man. That sucks. I really wanted it to be good. Okay. Well, let's see what else is out. You've amount of letdowns you've had. Well, the funny thing is that all of the letdowns I've had, this is the funny thing, is that they were all actually in the same video game. And the funniest thing about it is it was the same for him. See, y'all might not remember, but the OGs do. Lazy Peon started as a WoW content creator. I remember because I was there 3,000 years ago. And now here he is crashing out about his new wow killer dying. And here I am reacting to it. Also slightly upset. So I I guess I was created positive on the game for selfish reasons in that I selfishly wanted it to exist. I don't know, man. I'm just rambling like like an absolute idiot. Nothing else to say. TLDDR, I feel like I was lied to about the state of the funding of this game. If I'd have known that it wasn't entirely selfunded, I would have covered it completely differently with a lot more skepticism. Feel devastated about the whole thing imploding. Feel sad for the staff that randomly lost their job one day without any pay. It's going to be very entertaining seeing the court case and like seeing what actually happened, but that's probably going to take years to fully come out. And I think yeah, I'll be doing for my forfeit. I I'll be doing a Muay Thai fight in two or three months, As a way of saying sorry to the people that did lose money. If you watched watched one of my videos and spent money on the game, that would be my way of saying sorry. You can watch me get my head punched in or something. I really am truly sorry and embarrassed. I think he's more sorry about it than Steven that this happened. I guess he's more sorry than Steven. But all I can do is try and try and be better. going forward. I'm just I'm just going to treat every upcoming MMO as being garbage. That unless proven otherwise, it's a scam. I think that's that's got to be Everything on Kickstarter is a scam. Every fundraiser is a scam. Every petition is a data harvesting effort. Every sign up is a data harvesting effort. Every website is a uh Bitcoin farmer. Every video game that comes from an independent developer in China or Indonesia is definitely a Bitcoin farmer. That's just the way it is. You just expect it to be bad. Mindset that I have going forward for literally any other MMO. If an MMO comes to Kickstarter, it's not getting covered. And no Kickstarter MMOs are ever getting covered on this channel unless it's to be me'd on cuz they're all are just a disaster. I swear. I don't know. If it looks good, I'll talk about it. I I I can't talk to the camera anymore, bro. It's It's been six to seven weeks and I haven't sat in front of the camera and spoke for a while. I've completely forgotten how to do YouTube. I feel rusty. I feel like he's going to try and make a decent video next time for Crimson Desert. but I just wanted to make a quick video talking about the Ashes situation. We move on. Something good comes out. I've been seeing that people have been playing Quinnfall recently and Canon told me it's pretty good and I should revisit it. So maybe I will. Twinfall. Other than that, oh my god, there's a few there's a few things we could cover, I suppose. ESO. Combat revamp. That looks kind of cool. Jesus. Onwards and upwards. Jesus Christ. Ashes of creation. Rest in peace. End of an era. No more monthly live streams. Oh my god. And uh I was wrong. That's going to be it for this video. See you in the next one. This is in the top 10. Jesus. Sorry about that. This is in the top 10 YouTube apologies. So it is. This is Oh my god. Wow. Look at Pearl Abyss stock. Let me see where it's at now. I mean, I'll link you guys a video. I love Lazy Peon. Like, he's taking this. It's not your fault, man. It's not your fault that the game came out and it sucked. It It's It's not like or didn't come out and it sucked. Like, you didn't do this. You like I mean, really, there's no There's no way that you could stop that. Like, it's just that's life, man. It is. It's life.
