Are expensive off-roaders POINTLESS?

Introduction of the three vehicles and the challenge format as they prepare for the uphill drag race.
Expensive off-roaders clash in a multi-discipline test: Grenadier wins on points, but the Defender Octa and Ranger Raptor prove they’re no slouches either.
Summary
carwow’s showdown pits the high-dollar Land Rover Defender Octa against a tuned Inos Grenadier and a heavily boosted Ford Ranger Raptor, all weighing about 2.5 tonnes. The Defender Octa packs a BMW 4.4L twin-turbo V8 with 635 hp and 750 Nm, while the Inos Grenadier uses a 3.0L BMW inline-6 with about 450 hp and 680 Nm after Buzz Overland’s rally-spec upgrades. The Ranger Raptor has a 3.0L twin-turbo V6 with roughly 420 hp and 600 Nm, tuned by Rhino Metal Works. Over six challenges—including uphill drag, tree-row maneuverability, rock crawling, dirt drag, rock-slide precision, and a climb-off from standstill—Alex (Inos) ultimately takes victory with 13 points, Andy (Ranger) finishes second with 9, and the Defender Octa rounds out the podium with 12. The show highlights how price and tech can translate to capability, but driver skill, tire choice, and chassis tuning often decide the outcome just as much as raw power.
Throughout the episode, the crew weighs up handling versus brute force. Andy jokes about the Octa’s price tag, Graeme calls the shots on tricky lines, and Alex brings professional off-road experience to the Grenadier. The format rewards consistency, with three-point, two-point, and one-point placements for each event and a final tally that can swing with a single risky move—like attempting a difficult rock descent or an aggressive axle-twister pass. Episodes like this make a case for the practicality of expensive builds, but they also prove that a well-prepared, purpose-built off-roader (or a racer-bred Ranger) can still punch above its weight against a flagship with premium credentials.
Key Takeaways
- The Land Rover Defender Octa uses a BMW 4.4 L twin-turbo V8 producing 635 hp and 750 Nm, with full-time 4WD, an 8-speed auto, locking diffs, upgraded suspension, and a £160k price tag.
- The Inos Grenadier, tuned by Buzz Overland, runs a 3.0 L BMW inline-6 delivering about 450 hp and 680 Nm, weighs 2.5t, and costs roughly £100k fully prepped.
- The Ford Ranger Raptor, prepared by Rhino Metal Works, retains a 3.0 L twin-turbo V6 with around 420 hp and 600 Nm, uses factory tires, and sits at the lowest base price here (~£60k).
- Points are awarded per challenge (3 for winner, 2 for second, 1 for last). The Grenadier dominates the final tally with 13 points, followed by Defender with 12 and Ranger with 9 after a disqualification in one test.
- Tire choice and driver skill dramatically influence results, sometimes more than raw horsepower, as seen in the rock-crawl and obstacle tests where road vs. off-road tires affected traction and clearance.
- The finale test (standstill climb) is a real equalizer: even with massive power, getting traction from a standstill on steep, slippery ground hinges on approach, locking diffs, and momentum.
Who Is This For?
Essential viewing for enthusiasts weighing the value of expensive off-road builds versus purpose-built or stock-capable rivals. Great for readers curious about how power, tires, and tuning translate to real-world rock crawls, climbs, and drag races.

Ah, get out of the way, Graeme. JUST GET OUT OF THE WAY. WHAT WILL win in a series of off-road challenges between the new high-performance Land Rover Defender Octa and a tuned Ford Ranger Raptor and tuned Inos Grenadier? Well, we're going to find out starting with an uphill drag race. I'm Watson and you're watching Carac. The Land Rover Defender Octa has a 4.4 L twinturbo V8 from BMW. Puts out 635 horsepower and 750 new m of torque. drives all four wheels by an 8-speed automatic gearbox. We got locking central and rear differentials on it and upgraded suspension over a standard Land Rover Defender.
This car weighs in at 2 and a half tons and it costs £160,000. This Inos Grande has been prepared by Buzz Overland and they put into a rally spec. So, they fitted rated suspension and they've tuned a 3 L straight 6 BMW engine. So, it now has 450 horsepower and 680 new meters of torque. It still uses the factory tires and it's only got a central locking diff. This thing weighs in at 2 and a half tons just like the Defender, but it only costs a mere £100,000 fully prepped as is. This Ford Ranger Raptor has been prepared by Rhino Metal Works, and they've lifted the suspension, at rated the shocks.
They've also fitted aftermarket wheels and tires. This is the only car not on factory tires. They've also rated the 3 L twin turbo V6, who now puts out 420 horsepower and over 600 new meters of torque. This drives all four wheels via 10-speed automatic gearbox, and this one is fitted with a front and rear locking differential. This Ranger Raptor weighs about two and a half tons like the other vehicles, but it's the least expensive one here. As is, this is worth about £60,000. And it means that this plus the price of the Grenadier comes to the same price as this Octa.
So, what will happen? I have chosen to drive the Ford Ranger Raptor. But let's find out who's driving the other cars in the Defender is its owner, Andy. So, last time you were on in your old Defender, you got some serious air. This car has more power. What do you think is going to happen? It has more power. Unfortunately, it's twice the price. I'm going to be sensible, but let's see. So, Andy actually does health and safety for films and stuff like that, but when he's actually involved himself, all that goes out the window, so I bet he won't back off.
He's just going to go full ball up here. And it's quite tight. Now, in the Inos, we have its owner, Alex. So, Alex, you're actually a professional off-road driver, aren't you? Yeah, I've done a bit. Done enough. So, see how things go right now. Now, the way this is going to work, guys, is we are going to be playing for points. Whoever wins a challenge gets three points. The car that comes second, two points, and the one that comes last, just one point. If you don't complete a challenge, you get no points. The car with the most points at the end of all the challenges wins.
It's as simple as that. Let's get on with it. 3 2 1 Watson power Inos Airlines. I know that Aton Center said any racing driver that doesn't see a gap is not a racing driver, but I didn't see a gap, so I didn't go for it. Did you just feel it was too tight? Yeah, it's just too tight at the top. There was no gap. Do you know what? I definitely won that, didn't I, Alex? What about just me versus you with a bit of space either side of us? I think that's a good shout.
This is the thing. If you don't beat me, you still come last. If you do beat me, you come first and I come second. And then Alex comes last. Now, this is the thing. This is where Andy is going to go crazy. He won't be able to help himself other than to absolutely blast that car. And I bet he gets some air. Three, two, one, go. Come on. Oh, that was so close. I think I just had you, Andy. Yeah. Yeah, definitely. I came off a bit at the top. Maybe I've got some fear about deja vu from the past, but yep, you had it.
So, do you know what that means, Alex? You're still in second place. That means three points to the Ford, two points to the Inos, and just one to the very expensive Land Rover. Now for the next challenge, and it's a little bit trickier. Right. For this next test, what we're going to do is have a race around this tree through this wooded area. So, it checks the car's maneuverability, their turning circle, their agility, and their traction. And we'll be running against the clock. So, Graeme is going to time us on his phone. Basically, whichever car does it quickest wins.
We're going to have Andy going first cuz he's on the least amount of points. Andy, quick question. And are you going to do any changes to your car setting for this run? Yeah, I've actually turned octa mode off. Believe it or not, I don't think I need 630 horsepower for this. So, what I've done is I've just gone on to the mud and rut setting and keeping it as that. I have left the exhaust valve open though, so it sounds good. But apart from that, there's not a lot going for me on this one. You're struggling because you're on road tires for this, aren't you?
This is not ideal. Still, the grenadier is on the tires that it came from from factory. This is a little bit of a cheese in this car, but it has least power. steady start and it's very slippery at the top. His road tires won't be helping him, but he does have all the horsepower, so don't feel too sorry for the guy. Oh, he's doing quite a good job actually. That was well maneuvered. And he's going to blast it to the water. Oh my goodness. Here he comes. Well, that was pretty quick at the end. really good work.
So, the time to beat is 27.85. 27.85. That's actually really good, isn't it? Yeah, it's not bad. Alex, now this is what you do for a living. So, you you you should win. We shall see. That sounds so good. Now, Alex has proper off-road tires, which came with the car. I'm expecting big things from him. 2785's got a beat. It's gone off a bit quicker than Andy there. And oh, it was through there so quick. Oh my goodness. Oh, and he's going sideways. That's looking really good. Oh, he took a different route there. Harden the brakes then round.
That's faster. That was really good. He's showing his professional skills there. Not bad for a big bus. Well, he did cheat a little. How did he cheat? He took the first turn in and not the first second one. Do we need to make him rerun it? I wouldn't think so cuz it's very quick. So, your time was very good. It beat Andy by some margin. It's 20.9 seconds. However, Graeme says that you cheated and went round the first turning when you should have gone around the second turning. You're going to have to run it again, I'm afraid.
Sorry about that. How much slower is going to be now? I wonder. It's gone in even faster that time. That didn't look any slower. My tires were warmed up for that one, Matt. So, even better, mate. Great. You should have been quieter. I need all the help I can get. That's a 20.76. You were load slower, Alex. It was rubbish. Actually, you weren't. You were quicker. 20.76. I don't think I'm going to beat that, but I'll go and try and beat Andy. Thing is, I'm in someone else's vehicle, so I'm gonna feel a bit nervous about going too quickly.
Anyway, let's do it. Let's see what I can do. Full send. Scott says he doesn't mind. Scott will mind if I crash his car though, won't he? Then he will start to mind a lot. Don't even know where I'm going. Right. Here we go. Oh, can't even do this bit. I'm actually nervous. Oh, it's already gone wrong. Whoa. I feel a bit nervous on this bit. I'm definitely slower than Andy. Oh, thank God for the auto windscreen wipers. Did I beat Andy? I was really slow at Well, you didn't beat the Grenadier. Yes, but I did beat Andy.
2474. Let me just check the car. Did you uh I'm not sure if I clipped some trees. It looks all right. Ah, yeah. You can see it. No, it was the camera that hit it. Ah, the camera. The camera took one for the There it is. What step? Oh, no. Oh, dear. Let me just check with the owner. Yeah. No, it doesn't look like it. No, you ain't done that cuz that's right back. Cuz to do that there, you'd have took this camera up. Yes. Yes. Graeme, let's just double check. Scott, you know, you said you didn't care if I damaged your car.
Yeah. Just come and have a look at this. Was this like that already? Oh, yeah. Yeah, I'd already destroyed them. Okay. I haven't damaged your car then. No, that's fine. Okay. If you look underneath, all the ms were all bent over and folded flat. Phew. Yeah, you're right. All right. I came second. I came second against the professional. Saying that you didn't realize you can cut the corner. We were told we had to go diagonally that way, not cut on the inside. Sounds like So, if I can cut on the inside. Can I go again?
And if we're allowed to cut on the inside, you quite tight. The tire marks. He was The tire marks are there. We You know what? You can go again. Andy can go again. Let me move this out. Take off you. How many seconds have I got? I'm not going to tell you. Right. I'm not going to tell you. It's close. So, it's the question is, are you going to really push it and damage your £160,000 car? Damage the finance company's 160,000. Okay, fine. Right. Let's see what he does. So he's just done that run. Oh bugger.
So that was quicker. Yeah. 2205. Right. So one point to the Ford, two points to the Land Rover, and three points to the Inos. That means then that it's five points to the Inos, four points to the Ford, and three points to the Land Rover. The next challenge, though, is going to really test these cars. Okay guys, so the way this is going to work, we're going to drive up these steps, and then back down again. This isn't against the clock. This is all about finesse, cuz we'll be testing the car's chassis articulation, their ground clearance, and their control.
So Graeme will actually guide us up there and he will be the one that decides how well each car performs. I'm going to go first. So wish me luck. I should look at Graeme actually, shouldn't I? Don't know what that hand gesture means. This is doing quite well. Now I think this forwards lift kit is really helping it. There's a nasty nasty bit just down there. Big dip. Oh gosh. Forward. Gentle. Oh, literally can't see him. I don't think we should go any further forward. Really? This rock's going to bend this step if you go any further forward.
But I'm not sure that I can go backwards. Try it. Keep your wheels straight. No. Straighten them up. Is that straight? No. There. That's it. Go back at that. Go on. That's it. Is there any way down this for me? No, I don't think there is. Not even This rock is going to be too It's too much. If this can't do it, the others won't do it. How about if I go further that way? This rock is hitting the step about halfway along. So, even if you go over that way, you're still going to get kicked this way.
I'll tell you what, I'll go down the the one I came up. And we'll let the other guys try. All right. And then they can back up like I had to. All right. Okay. Where's Graeme? This is pretty controlled over here. I'm quite pleased with this. Yeah, this is good. This is good. This is good. Right then, chaps. So, going down the one on the right hand side is a bit tricky because there's a rock you might hit. And I started to bottom out on my running boards. Now, you're quite welcome to have a little shot yourself to see if you can clear it, but you might not want to if you're in a 160,000 brand new Octa, but it's up to you, Andy.
I know you're a bit crazy. I'll be being sensible and sticking up and down the same one. I think I might struggle without locking diffs here. I had all my diffs locked. I would lock all yours. I don't have any. I tell you what's amazing, Andy, watching your car just walk up there with its road tires on. That is pretty impressive. It's just effortless. I fear I might need a bit more speed than that with no traction control and no lockers. Wait, Andy, you going to try the hard one? If you do the tricky descent, you'll get a bonus point.
Easily swayed. I can't believe he's going for it. What a madman. Andy, you're crazy. You're going to feel it slide in a minute. Keep going straight. I would not be doing that if I was him. Keep going straight. Keep going. Steady. Right. Turn it to me now. Steady. Steady. Turn it to me more. Steady. Hold it. AH, STRAIGHTEN YOUR WHEELS UP. YES. Missed it. Keep it straight. Hey, you clear. I got to go out and check his car. Kind of did it without damaging it. Surely didn't even scrape. Not even one scrape underneath. You're such a bloody Land Rover shill.
You guess what car Graeme drives. Look, it's that one over there. Look. Look. It's that the one on the left. No, if this was a standard defender, it wouldn't have done it. He wouldn't have done it. No, cuz this is an Octar. It's got extra ground clearance. That is madness. There just like like it's on a winch. It's nuts, isn't it? Yeah. Okay. Home now. No. No, Alex. This is it, mate. You can play it safe or you can go just crazy. It's up to you. I think momentum is going to be the key here.
Well, it's all going to depend on whether you're going to go down the tricky slope or not. If you want to just battle it out for second place with me, you can just come down the middle one. Your choice. Let's see what happens. Nobody wants to be the first person to lose, do they? Look, look. He's like, doesn't even need Graeme. Graham, you're fired. He doesn't need you. He might do on this bit. Can't THE WAY. HE'S COMING DOWN. He doesn't give a Alex doesn't care. I think you just stitched me up. I could have That was wicked.
That was Alex. So, come on. Say it. Land Rover fanboy. Come on. What one breaks my heart now? So, Inos beat the Land Rover and last was the Ford. So, three points to the Inos, two to the Land Rover and one to the Ford. That means that the IOS is now on eight points and the Land Rover and Ford are drawn on five points. But things could change with the next challenge. Right guys, what we're going to do now is have a good old-fashioned on dirt drag race. This is all about power and traction. Before we do that though, let's see which car sounds the best.
So, I'm going to rev up my tuned Ranger Raptor. Here we go. Okay. So, it's all right, but I think yours might sound better. Andy, go on. Rev yours up. 4,000 soft limiter as well. And finally, Alex, your turn. So, Alex, was it your company that actually built that car? Yeah. Yeah. Buzz Special Vehicles and tuned by Tom Wriggley. Sounds one thing. What really matters is straight line performance. Let's do this drag race then. Graham's going to count us in. May the best car win. Three, two, one. Come on. YES. YES. I didn't think I was going to win that.
That was a complete shock to me. This thing picks up like nobody's business. I thought you going to win that, Andy, but you didn't. Yeah, another 10 meters I would have won, but then I don't think any of us would have stopped. That was um certainly interesting and quite surprising from the Raptor as well. Are we having a rematch? Rematch? No. No rematch? Not this time. Cuz every time I give you a rematch, I get beaten. Go on, Graeme. You want to do a rematch? No. I think yes, I do want a rematch. Actually, we'll do best two out of three.
Sounds good to me. I might want to keep second. Oh, we're out voting now. There's two of one to go. 3 2 1. This just picks up so well. Wait, I think that's clearcut now, guys. Andy, were you any closer that time? Afraid not. Same as. But the Inos is catching up. Definitely. Right. So, three points to the Ford Ranger Raptor. Two points to the Defender Octa and one for the Inos. And it means that the total scores now are nine to the Inos, eight to the Ford, and seven to the Land Rover. It's not over yet.
Now, the cars are going to compete across a rock crawl. And this is just about going smooth, steady, keeping momentum, and not bottoming out. And Graeme will be directing us, but also grading us. Whichever car does it the best gets the most points. So, we're going to have Alex going first in the Inos. How will it do? He's doing a good job. That's the easy bit. Now there's the hard bit. If he goes too far to the right, he's just going to slide off the rock and potentially destroy his car. Either roll it or just smash the gearbox casing.
I think he's getting his mud mud flaps caught. Thank you, sir. Perfect spotting. Well done. How is that, Alex? It looked quite good. Surprisingly good. The Inos is not Its forte is not really rock crawling, so I'm impressed. Okay, then Andy, over to you. I mean, rock crawling is what Land Rovers are good at, but your tires aren't the best for it. However, you have some serious ground clearance. You just be able to just drive over it like it's a normal road, surely. Fingers crossed to see what it can do. That looks like it's right on its tippy toes.
There's so much ground clearance there. Look at that. That's incredible. Good. Here we're using its electronics just controlling the slip of the wheels. How can I beat Andy? Don't know what I need to do to win. Steady as she goes. Stop. I literally can't see him now. I'm going have to I have to lift my seat up that way just a little bit. Set. Steady. Straight. Now drop. Get ready. Control the drop. This is just chugging along really nicely. I'm just controlling it a bit on the brake. Great way a little bit. Great. Nothing between them.
Right. So, what you got to do now, Graeme, is just let go of the Land Rover biases. Yes. And think about which car or driver did it the best. Right. So, I'm going to strip back. This has got How many diffs has this got? I I only use the rear. Right. So this has got diffs. The defender's got diffs. That's got open diffs. And it's got a central diff, hasn't it? Center diff lock. Yeah. So I've got one diff lock on. Right. And he's got one. You have one on. You were in Rockall. You were in Rockall, weren't you?
Yeah. He's got all the clever electronics. But that got road tires. Remember to let go of your Land Rover Bes. It's not to be the vehicles did the challenge exactly the same. There's nothing between any of them. So the only thing I can give it down to is the tires. But do mud tires really help me on rocks? No. So, actually, if you think about a climber, they don't really have grips. No, they have trainers on. They have trainers on. I've got like 50 profile tires. So, so Graeme, with that in mind, with that in mind, no traction control and it's a land.
I had mine off. I know. I know. It's breaking my heart. Come on. Come on. Come on. You got to call it. No bias, right? Everybody was exactly the same. There was no difference between any of them any of them. So I think two points to all of them. Oh, okay. We've never had that before on Caro. So two points to the Ford, two points to the Land Rover, and two points to the Inos. So where does that leave us? Yep. 11 points to the Inos, 10 points to the Ford, and nine to the Land Rover.
As we go into our last challenge, it does mean then that is potentially open for any of the cars to win. So what will happen? The final challenge is extremely tricky. We're going to start the cars halfway up a steep, rocky, and slippery incline. We need to be able to drive the cars from a standstill all the way to the top, and Graeme will be grading each car for how well it completes the challenge, if they even manage to complete it, because if they get stuck or roll backwards, then it's a disqualification. Okay, everybody, if you want to start us, Graeme, and then Alex, let's see how you do.
So, he hasn't rolled back from the start. He's going for power. That was a really good job there, Alex. Well done. Pressure now is on you, Andy. He hasn't slipped back either. That was smooth as anything as well. I literally don't know how I go about beating the other ones. I don't know what I need to do. I've lost. I'm disqualified. Can I even make it up? Let's try again. Where? Oh, I seem to have just driven into the wall. Good job. It was dust. Yeah. Roll back straight away. Straight away. No, I I spun my wheel straight away, but I didn't roll back, did, did I?
You did? Yeah, you rolled back. Well, you you had to go back about at least a foot to get going. Yeah. Why did this not do it? I don't know. Cuz it's got you had all the diffs in, didn't you? Disqualified. Which car won? I've got to give that one to the Defender. The Defender. Okay. So, three points to Land Rover. Two to the Inos. Nothing to this. All right. What? On the axle twister. Didn't complete the axle twister course properly. No, it didn't. Did it? So, I need to knock a point off of that as well.
Knock another point off of that. So, that means that the Ford comes last. It would have had 10 points, but because of that earlier disqualification, it's now got nine. In second place, it's actually the Land Rover Defender with 12 points. But the winner is the Inoss Grenadier on 13 points. So well done, Alex Inos. And thank you very much as well Andy for coming down and playing in your very expensive Octa. A huge thanks to Scottwell for lending me this car. I'm sorry that I didn't be a proud. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video.
