Rivian R1T quad-motor EV slaps a 10.6s quarter-mile, beating a Corvette Z06 in a dramatic drag race showdown.
Summary
Carwow’s B Watson pits the Rivian R1T quad-motor with 1,025 hp and 1,624 Nm of torque against a Corvette Z06 with a 5.5L V8, in a set of rolling and standing quarter-mile tests. The Rivian weighs 3,170 kg and costs around $120k, while the Z06 weighs 1,685 kg and sits at just over $120k. Jesse Iuji, a NASCAR driver sponsored by GM, drives the Z06 and brings a nervy, larger-than-life persona to the race. The video highlights how electric torque, launch control, and four-wheel-drive dynamics influence performance, and it reveals nuanced differences in launch strategy, traction control, and brake performance. Throughout the day, the two battle through rolling starts, brake tests, and multiple drag attempts, with the Rivian ultimately posting a 10.6-second standing quarter and the Corvette a 11.3-second run. The test also touches on driver setup, including how changes to traction modes and launch settings can dramatically alter outcomes. By the end, the Rivian proves to be a startlingly quick car for its class, even against a high-revving, iconic V8 sports car.
Key Takeaways
- Rivian R1T’s standing quarter-mile time is 10.6 seconds, beating the Corvette Z06’s 11.3 seconds in this head-to-head drag race.
- Rivian’s quad-motor setup (one motor per wheel) and 1,025 hp deliver immediate torque, aiding rapid launch compared to the Z06’s naturally aspirated V8.
- Launch control and traction settings have a major impact: switching to reduced mode and turning off stability control noticeably improved the Rivian’s performance.
- Brake tests showed the Z06 had a shorter stopping distance from 100 mph with carbon-ceramic brakes, while the Rivian relied on regen braking that affected stopping feel.
- Pro driver behavior and vehicle setup (burnouts, launch calibration) play a crucial role in drag outcomes, sometimes more than nominal power figures.
- Despite its weight, the Rivian’s acceleration advantage comes from instant electric torque and four-wheel drive, producing a surprising edge in a quarter-mile race.

Come on, call. Risk it for the biscuit. Jeez, what happened there? I'm grateful for not dinner parties. Feel free to invite me around. What will win in a drag race between the new Riven R1T quad motor and a Corvette Z06? Well, I'm going to find out by racing them over the standing quarter mile. I'm B Watson and you're watching Car Wow. The Rivian R1T has four electric motors, one for each wheel, and a total of 1,025 horsepower and 1,624 new m of torque. It has launch control, weighs 3,170 kg and cost around $120,000. The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has a 5.5 L natural aspirated V8 with 670 horsepower and 625 new m of torque.
This drives the rear wheels through an 8-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox with launch control. The car weighs in at 1,685 kg and cost just over $120,000. I'm really excited about this race and it could be a bit embarrassing for Corvette Win because this is a huge heavy electric truck that is an allout performance car. Also, it's being driven by professional racing driver Jesse Iuji. He's a NASCAR racer and he's sponsored by GM. So, if he gets it wrong and gets beaten by this truck, oh god, it's going to be embarrassing. Let's say hello to him.
He's the owner of that car, actually. Hi Jesse. How you doing mate? I'm doing good mate. How's it going? Yeah, I'm all right. I mean really you'd normally think looking at these two vehicles that you are going to absolutely destroy me today, but might not be the case. Yeah, you got that electric truck right there. And we all know with these electric vehicles, it has that instantaneous power, instantaneous torque, and you have computers that make sure that you lose no traction at all compared to my old school V8. It's not that old school. It's about as high-tech as a V8 can be really, isn't it?
Cuz it's really impressive that engine. And you've got one of the smartest launch control systems on any car. What can it do? I mean, the loss control is pretty good on this thing. I mean, you can vary it from 3500 RPM all the way up to 5,000 RPM. And then you can also vary the slip percentage as well from 5 to 15%. So, all of that does kind of help, but man, you got more than me over there. I'm going to try to find any excuse I can. I'm sorry. It seems to me, Jesse, that regardless of which side of the Atlantic you're on, racing drivers always come with their book of excuses.
And that is your excuse. Formal protest. I'll tell you one thing that you're going to win on. We're going to do a sound check. Do you want to rev up your V8? Is that exhaust standard? It sounds pretty good. Yeah, but is that exhaust standard or have you done something to it? Yeah, the exhaust is definitely not standard anymore. I have a AWE capback kit on it with some lovely different type of rest of the exhaust. I'll just put it that way. Does that give you a bit more power? I mean, I hope. But these things, you can't tune them yet.
So the the ECU is still locked. So even if it does help it with a little bit of power, you're not really extracting the full potential of the vehicle. Okay, fair enough. All right, then Jesse, let's start off with a rolling race. We're going to race to the second set of cones to the half mile. What would you like to roll in at? Because this is electric. I've got no gears. What speed and gear would you prefer? I mean, I'm not really a street racer, but if I was on the highways, I would do second gear, 30 mph.
Okay, second gear at 30 then. Let's do it. Let's roll into it. 3 2 1 go. Come on. Here comes the quarter mile. Wa! That pickup was insane. Oh no, this is like topping out. I'm winning the roll race. Let's go. It's got a limiter at 112. What's that all about? Right. I thought I was going to absolutely mully you there. I thought I put my foot down and this thing would just take off, which electric cars do. But for some reason, it didn't shoot off quite as much as I thought it would. And that picked up way quicker than I thought it would.
Yeah, this thing actually surprised me on that roll race. It actually did really, really good. Like I was thinking I was going to lose traction and stuff because the surface and everything. It did well the whole race. Oh dear. Um I'm a bit concerned. Also concerned about the next challenge, but let's do it anyway. Let's do a brake test from 100 mph where it's a cones. Slow on the anchors. See which car stops in the shortest distance. I got carbon ceramics, so we'll see how they do. Oh god, I've got some regen braking. Let's see if that helps.
There goes my phone. Oh, there's a bit further back. Z06 wins that. Yeah, you definitely won that, Jesse. I mean, the Rivian didn't do too bad. Not considering its size and weight, and it's against a, you know, full-on performance car. So, yeah, I guess I I'll take that. Not brilliant, but still. Maybe I can win the next challenge, though. Okay, then Jesse, what we're going to do now is a race over the quarter mile, but rolling into it to give you a bit of a chance. You know, we know that electric cars launch really well from a standstill compared to a normal petrol car, especially when you've got four-wheel drive.
This should be in your favor. So, if you don't win this, you're in a lot of trouble. You ready? No pressure. We'll see. You got all that extra power and torque, but we'll see. All right, All right. Excuses, excuses. Let's get into it. If you stay with me, we're riding at 10 mph. Two. Whoa. Oh, the pickup's really good. Can he catch me? I'm spinning. I was spinning. Can he CATCH ME? HE'S COMING NOW. WELL, come on. Let's go. Come on. Let's get him on top end. Oh my god. I'm on the top end. OH, HE'S STARTING TO TOP OUT.
OH NO. MATE, I thought I had you there, but this just tops out. It's like got a limit of about 110. It like started to slow down, then you came past. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it looked like you had me for a little bit, but then, you know, team Corvette just, you know, came in for that win, baby. I'm gutted. I think things are going to be different on the drag race, and this is what matters. So, let's head back up to the start line and do the race that we've all been waiting for. All right, let's do it.
You set up your traction control with all the variables. I have to press a button and that's it. First I got to do a burnout real quick so I can clean off my tires and then then I'll have maybe maybe have a shot. I don't care. I I you know I'm just going to sit here. Right. Uh just Yeah. Right. Blimeies at it. Freaking hell. Oh my god, he got out of there. I'm spinning. Where is he? Oh, he's quite close. Oh, he's coming now. He's coming. Come on. Let's go. Come on. Let's see if we can catch him.
This is slowing down. HE'S COMING BACK. WHOA. WHOA. WHOA. WHOA. JEEZ. Oh no. I was I was too cocky. He's going to be absolutely rejoicing there. Jesse. Yes sir. Tell me how much you enjoyed that. That was super fun. What happened to you at the end? Because I was coming back but then all of a sudden it almost like you fell on your face. It was so close. I think if I get a slightly better launch, I can get a better launch. I can maybe I can I You got me stuttering. I can maybe beat you.
Two out of three. Give me a two out of three, please. We can do that. We can do best two out of three. My launch was terrible right there. But hey, I ended up getting through. Oh god. All right, let's go again. Right. Do you know what? I had my traction fully on. I'm going to put it into reduce mode now. See if that helps. Hopefully, it will. Jesse, do you need to go through your procedure again? Yes, sir. Quick little burnout and then set up my launch control and I'll be ready to go. The amount of debris on your rear tires, Jess, is awful.
3 2 1. Get out of the hole. He beat me off the hole. Am I far enough ahead? He's coming now. Come on. Don't drop back. No go. Oh, you hit me again. But it's so close. I just need to get a better launch. Best out of three. And so far I've got two. But that thing launches out the hole. If this was a eighth mile race, you win. But it's not. It's a/4 mile. You're just hipping me. I need to just do a better launch. All right. You know what, mate? I want to give you a chance.
Let's go best three out of five. Okay. All right. Thank you. Look, there's a deer. Do you know which animal kills more people than any other in the United States? Do you think it's the the mountain lion or I don't know, alligators? What do you think it is? Walrus, maybe? It's actually deer. Deer kill more humans in the USA than any other animal. Wow, that is uh pretty crazy. And it's crazy that they got deer here. They don't mean to kill us. They just kind of just jump in front of our cars. Yeah, deer in the headlights type thing.
I don't know why they do it. Somebody should study it one day. Well, that was a happy fact, wasn't it? I'm great fun at dinner parties. Feel free to invite me around. I need to win this one to stay in the game. Come on, we can do this. We had a bog. Come on, we got this. Man, that thing is out of there. Come on, car. Come on, car. I'm trying. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Oh, it's better in reduced mode. Wow, that got you. What happened there? Like, how did you even get all that out of it?
Like, you did something over there. Yeah, I just pressing some buttons and it seems to have got quicker. That truck is definitely woken up. I don't even know how you're making that happen. It's happening though, which is great. 3 2 1 Whoa! Come on. You got a way better launch. Oh my god. Ah, I've got ahead. I'm spinning like crazy. Yes. Yes, baby. Yes. Well, Jesse, that was you beat there. Fair and square. This is crazy. It's just like this truck's woken up no matter what I do. I don't know how it's doing what it's doing, but it's doing what it's doing, and it's doing it really well.
Well said. But it ain't over. There's still one more chance. One more shot. Risk it for the biscuit. Right. I'm going to turn the traction all the way off. I need the perfect launch. Here he goes again. I'm sure his tires are getting warmer and warmer and warmer. The treads getting thinner and thinner and thinner, though. Decent start. Spinning a little bit. Come get Oh, yeah. He's He destroys me. Nah, I got this. I've got this. Whoa, it's absolutely flying. Golly. That is a world of difference. What happened there, Jesse? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
What? Did you press some type of turbo mode or something crazy like that? I turned the stability control all the way off and it just changed everything completely. That is mad. I wish I'd known about that to begin with. I didn't even have a shot. I can't believe it. I didn't know about that. Sorry though, mate. It's It's victory to me. You got that one. fair and square. Oh, nuts. I can't believe I managed to win. That is insane. So then, what exactly happened? Well, the Rivian won. It completed the standing quarter mile in 10.6 seconds.
The Corvette took in 11.3 seconds. Listen, huge thanks to Jesse for taking part. It's been great fun. What a vehicle though this is. It's so quick. Thanks to Riven for lending us this guy, letting me thrash it. If only I knew about that beforehand. Couldn't make the video shorter. Sorry about that. Hope you enjoyed it though.
