Toyota’s TOUGHEST OFF-ROADERS TESTED
Chapters6
The two vehicles race uphill to see who has the better launch and power, with comments on range and final margin determining points.
Toyota’s toughest off-roaders showdown pits Land Cruiser against Hilux in a multi-event battle, with the Land Cruiser ultimately taking the win after a tense final traction test.
Summary
Carwow’s Graeme, Sam, and the crew pit two rugged Toyota legends—the Land Cruiser and the Hilux—against each other in a head-to-head off-road showdown. The action kicks off with an uphill drag, where Sam edges out Graeme’s Land Cruiser by a nose, earning two points for the Hilux and one for the Cruiser. A speed-and-precision course follows, testing manoeuvrability, ground clearance, and traction on a muddy, bumpy track. The Hilux dominates some segments but grapples with a ground-clearance mismatch on a step climb due to wheelbase differences, leading to a protest and a reset that shakes up the scoring. The descent, drag, and rock-crawl challenges tighten the competition as both drivers push limits. In a dramatic rock crawl, Sam completes the line while Graeme’s Cruiser applies lockouts and low-range gear; the Hilux earns more points, but not enough to overturn the Cruiser’s lead. The final traction-and-control test on a steep, loose slope seals the deal: the Cruiser shines in finesse, clinching the overall victory as the Hilux closes the gap but falls short. True.com’s Hilux rental plug closes the piece as the teams sign off after a high-energy, crowd-pleasing bout of off-road gate-crashing and hand-gestured guidance between drivers.
Key Takeaways
- The Hilux won the uphill drag by a nose, earning two points for the Hilux and one for the Land Cruiser.
- Two 2.8 L 400 diesel engines with 204 hp and 500 Nm torque were used for parity in the course tests.
- Ground clearance differs: Hilux = 310 mm vs Land Cruiser = 205 mm, influencing obstacle navigation and line choice in shared sections.
- Graeme controls the scoring: two points for a win, one for a top-run or completion, and zero for a DQ or failure.
- The final traction test on a steep, loose slope highlighted finesse and throttle control as the deciding factor for the overall winner.
- In the rock crawl, locked diffs and low-range gear were deployed by the Cruiser to optimize traction, underscoring the value of on-the-fly tech adjustments in real off-road conditions.

Oh, Graeme. No. Which is the best off-road, Toyota Land Cruiser or Toyota Hilux? Let's find out with an off-road battle. The first challenge we're going to do is an uphill drag race. I'm fairly confident. Right, Sam? Are you ready to go? I'm ready to win, my princess. He thinks that won't be the case. First over the top is the winner. Let's do this. 3 2 1 go. COME ON. OH MY GOODNESS. OH, go for the wind. Whoa. I think Sam got it. Quick question, Sam. Were you in low range or high range? Not that it's any of your business.
I was in high range. Same here. No excuses. Okay, let's speak to Graeme. Graham. Sam. Graeme. Graeme, how much should I win by? A nose. Perfect. He got a better start, didn't he? He did. And he only just won by nose. But he won. And that means two points to the Hilux, one to the Land Cruiser. This is how it's going to work. In each challenge, if you win, two points. If you can last, it's one point. And if you don't complete the challenge, you get nil points. We got some other challenges. We'll see which car gets the most points overall.
Let's move on to the next battleground. Now, we're going to have a race against the clock. can ground time us as we drive around this little off-road course over some bumpy ground around the back of the tree over through this muddy part and then up this bank. And this will test the car's maneuverability, the ground clearance and their traction. Terms of power, both cars are equal. 2.8 L 400 diesels with 204 horsepower, 500 new m of torque. Let's do it. Come on, Matt. Don't go too quick, otherwise I'm going to smash into a tree. And I've got to watch these bumps here not to ground out.
OH, NO. WHOA. OH, this is a bad bit here. Come on. Where are we? OH, RIGHT. RAZ IT NOW, WATSON. Raz it. Not too fast cuz I need to do a tight turn here. Right down there. Don't bottom out. Don't damage it. Why is he pog there? What? He needs to come back to here. Oh, sorry. Does mean I get a second go. Oh, I don't want to go too fast and smash into a tree. That would be terrible. Come on. I've lost boost there. Watch this bit. Don't want to bottom out and smash the car.
And here. Oh, it's turning well. Come on, Lundy. Way. Let's go. Need to break here, not under steer. So, I would need to take a tight turn here to get over. Oh, I'm breaking hard. Oh, what was THE TIME? WHOA. BUT I DID BOTTOM out a bit, didn't I? Bottom out. Let's have a look. Hopefully, there's no damage. Oh my god. Oh, look. Oh, it's metal. It's all metal. Yeah, it's just such a scrap. This is a tough car. That's why you buy a Toyota. I'm pretty pleased with my time, Sam. Good luck to you.
No pressure. Oh, good start there by Sam, but then he is a racing driver. He's determined to beat me. Whoa, the turn through. That was brilliant. Got a bit of over steer. Oh, he's looking very quick. He's looking very quick. Oh no. Is he going to beat me? That is some good driving. Oh, no. Bottom out. O, it's close. It's going to be so close. It's so close, isn't it? You remember what yours was? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, HE WON. NO. 20.5. LOOK. Well done, Sam. Well done. Oh, Sam, you you were so fast. YOU BLOODY WON AGAIN.
NO. OH, NO. RIGHT. So that means two points to the Hilux, one to the Langru, which means overall two points to this, four to the Hilux. I've got a lot of work to do. You have. Next challenge. This next challenge is to drive up the steps and then down the more extreme steps. This test the car's traction, their ground clearance, which is a bit annoying because the Hilux has 310 mm. This just has 205 mm of ground clearance. I'm going to put my car into low range mode, diff lock central, diff lock rear, and disconnect the sway bars.
I have the tech. Graeme's going to score us. It's all about which car does it the smoothest and most majestically. Let's go. So, this is not about speed. It's just about control. Oh, that's why he's telling me to slow down. I don't always understand Graeme's gestures. He's telling me to go left and straight. Come on, car. Oh, I might bottom out here. If I bottom out, I'm going to get marked down. Also, I've slowed down a bit. Oh, oh, oh. Now, I need to give it some power up here to keep climbing cuz we don't want to spin any wheels.
Look at that. That is just control. I feel very confident about this. Now, it might get a little trickier here. That looks a bit sketch. What does that mean, Graeme? Why are you tapping the bank? It's where I want you. Right tight to the bank. Is that where you want to take me? Yes. I want to take you by the bank. I never knew Graeme felt that way about me. He's got a very pleaded look on his face. No. Oh, we're in the air. Keep going that way. Oh, easy does it. I'm driving pretty well, Graeme.
You're doing well. Well, that's looking good. Hopefully Sam doesn't do quite so well. Okay, young Samuel, you've done very well on the speed events being a racing driver, but how are you going to do on the controlled finesse events? That downhill bit looked genuinely terrifying. Go Graham's here. Oh, look at that. Look at that guy. He's got a wheel in the air. It's bottomed out. So, this is bottomed out. Have I already lost? Can I reverse? Yes. You got to do it slowly, though. So, put her on tight to the right. That's it. That'll do.
Just bring her back slowly. That's it. Straighten her up. That's it. What happened to the better ground clearance? Matt, I have been dqed by Graeme. I can no longer continue the course. I think you've just inherited a win. What? Yeah, we put you on exactly the same line as the Freeland uh as the Land Cruiser. So, what's bottomed out? It's the side step, but he's got a side step. I know. This must have slightly longer wheelbase. Formal protest, Graeme. So, we put him on exactly the same line as you went through. Yeah, you've got side steps as well.
Yeah, but his his wheelbase must be slightly longer than yours because it ground out, right? So, even though he's got more ground clearance, longer wheelbase because it's a pickup truck with that low bed when against him. Yeah. So that means no points for the Hilux, two points for this. Yes. So scores are now four points each. Yes, we're level. We're all level. Oh yes. Game on. Time for the next challenge. This next challenge is all about hill descent control. So we're going to have a downhill drag race, but the idea here is to be the slowest to the cones.
Right, we both got our systems engaged. Graeme is going to start us. Good luck, Sam. Three, two, one, go. Oh my goodness, they're both really slow. Oh, Sam's going out his window. Formal protest, of course. What the I feel like a tank commander. What's going on? I know. But this is amazing. Ryan, why am I going so fast? Shield his hand controls better than yours. This is B. Oh god, I've broken it. This is so slow. If I fall off here, it could kill me. I can still grab that steering wheel somehow. Follow you. Oh, yeah.
Let's send it that way a bit. This is amazing. That is incredible. I really hope that the system doesn't suddenly fail cuz So do I. Cuz you're going to be in the boot. I don't care if you crash and die. I just don't want you to hit my car. I'm just It's all right. Can you give it? Yeah, that's better. Thanks. Aim towards the crew. Can you hold my hand? Yeah, absolutely. Come on, buddy. Here we go. Here we go. Slowly. This is amazing. Do I hold my other hand, Graeme? Come on. This is incredible.
Just jump on. That's unreal, isn't it? Yeah. At some point, I'm probably going to have to get back in. I think you might have to or Graeme who won. Yeah, I don't know who won that. It's still going on at the minute. I think we've just passed the comb now. So So what's your verdict? I would say this has definitely won. Okay. So two points to the Land Cruiser. Two points to Lander. One to the Hilux, which did all right. Did it though? Well, sort of. So that means overall six points to the Land Cruiser and five to the Hilux.
Let's move on to the next challenge. I can't get in. You can't get in. So So what? Oh gosh. Okay. Better get in. Steady as she goes. I'll just steer her around that way. I could just do the rest of the challenges like this. Graeme, I've been destroyed. You have been destroy You've been humiliated. Genuinely. Right. I'm bored of this. It's taking too long. Now we're going to have a drag race. First to the finish line wins and I'm at a disadvantage here cuz I'm racing racing driver Sam. Clue is in the title. And the Hilux is significantly lighter than this.
2.1 tons versus 2.4 tons. And we've got the same power. Oh dear. This is right in your area, isn't it there, Sam? I hope so. What are you? 400 kilos more. Best of luck, sir. It's trying to sight me out. Let's go. 3 2 1. Oh, it's close. Go on. Come on. No. No. No. No. No. No. Damn it. No, I think we know the result of that, Sam. But I'd like to make Graeme walk over here, wouldn't you? Just to be sure. Yeah, but make sure he watches his footing. We know he likes a little trip.
Medics. Graeme's running. Medics. You probably didn't see the finish line, but this one with dust. Yeah, but I think there was more of a dust cloud behind the Toyota Hilux than there was between Okay, the Land Cruiser. So, you're right though. That one, this didn't. Two points to the Hilux, one to the Land Cruiser, which means it's all square on seven points each. But things could change at this next challenge cuz it's a tricky one. This next challenge is a classic off-road rock crawl. Graeme is going to direct us over these tricky rocks. Hopefully Sam won't ground out and get disqualified.
This is high stakes. Are you feeling confident, Sam? Yeah. Based on how it did on the axle twisters, I think this is going to be storming for me. I think he's being sarcastic. Here we go. Steady as she goes. I'm already nervous. Slow it down a bit. That way a little bit. While I'm waiting for Sam to do his thing, I'm going to go into low range mode. Ready. Disconnect my anti-roll bars. Put on my central diff lock. Ready to go. Keep it straight. And my rear diff lock. Everything's locked. A little bit that way.
Set. Steady. It's going to drop. Oh. Oh, he's bottomed out. Steady. This way a little bit. Steady. Walk it very slow. It's going to drop again in the set. This is really tough. There we go. Ready. What I'm really pleased about is that he's done one of the side steps, the left hand side earlier, and now I think he's evened things up by doing the right hand side one. Yay. That'll be a nice bill heading my way. Got to remember the Hilux does have higher ground clearance than this, but it's got a longer wheelbase. Yes, they did it.
Sam, did you complete that? It looked like you were actually bottoming out, but you didn't. Is that correct? Those liable statements won't be tolerated. We completed the course. That's all you NEED TO KNOW. OH, PRESSURE. This thing is so good. Oh, just walking forwards now. Don't fall down this hole, otherwise we're going to be in trouble. That's right. This is how Graeme earns his money. Waving his hands about like that. I heard something at the back end, like it touched something. Maybe it didn't. Graeme didn't realize. A little bit that way. That's it. Keep coming.
He's talking, but I can't hear a word he's saying. Stay there. It's going to drop, so get ready. I can never hear what he's saying ever. You know, when you did it. Yeah. Did you have your window down? Did I? Of course I did. So, you can hear him. That's common sense. Yeah. I I haven't done that. Maybe it'll help me now. Been doing this for years. Never done that once. What an idiot. Straight. Little bit more. That's it. Keep going that way slightly. Hey, that was cool. That was impressive. I think the wheelbase on this was the advantage over that again.
Really? Cuz where I stopped you both, your side step was just off the floor. Oh, it was so cuz I thought he' bottomed out, but he hadn't. literally millimeters. This one had about that much underneath it. So, I think with this, two points to this and one point to the Hilux. But special respect to Sam for doing a fantastic job. I don't care about respect. I'm married. I want my points. Okay, so nine points to the Land Cruiser, eight to the Hilux. We're going into the final challenge now. If this gets disqualified, Sam wins. But if Sam wins the next challenge, it's a draw overall.
what's going to happen. Let's do it. This final challenge is all about traction and control. So, we're going to drive up this steep slope. It's quite slippery, lots of loose rocks, and the idea is to go up as steadily as we can without spinning our wheels. And Graeme will grade us on how much finesse we have while scaling the slope. Before we do it though, I want to say huge thank you to true.com for lending us that Hilux. If you need to rent some heavy duty vehicles like off-roaders or vans or something, check them out.
Right. Go on, Sam. This is it. You need to win to draw. Go. Oh, that was beautiful. How can I do though? Bit of brake boost. Go. So, how was that formal protest? Oh god, I've got no weight in the back of that. So, what we're doing is comparing the cars. Okay. And if this car did better offroad, it did better off road because of how it's made. It did win. Did win. Okay. It won. Very well, in fact. Very well. I thought he did very well to be fair. He did for a pickup. He come up there very well.
Would he have been better with a heavy load in the back? It'd have been better if he got a heavy load. Yeah, Sam normally has a heavy load in the back. I released it this morning, but this time Oh well. So, two points to the Land Cruiser and one point to the Hilux, which means the scores are nine to the Hilux and 11 to the Land Cruiser. So, it wins overall. Thanks very much for watching. If you want to watch some other videos, click on these windows. You're going to love those videos.
