V8 v I6 v V6 v I4: OFF-ROAD BATTLE
Chapters12
Graeme explains the scoring system and how heat winners gain four points down to one point for last place, with zero for unfinished cars.
Carwow’s off-road showdown pits Jeep, VW Tuareg, Toyota LC, and Inos Grenadier against each other in a point-based, time-and-torque battle with a post-race value twist.
Summary
In Carwow’s V8 v I6 v V6 v I4: OFF-ROAD BATTLE, Watson and Graeme orchestrate a multi-round off-roading contest featuring a Jeep Wrangler, VW Touareg, Toyota Land Cruiser, and an Inos Grenadier. Each challenge awards 4, 3, 2, or 1 points for first through last, with no points if a car doesn’t finish. The heats include uphill drug races, timed muddy slaloms, a rock-solid precision crawl, and a high-torque rock climb, all designed to test power, grip, and drivers’ finesse. As the competition unfolds, the older vehicles surprise expectations, especially the Touareg and Grenadier, while the Jeep demonstrates consistent capability across stages. After four stages, the Jeep leads on aggregate, but a final “value” twist subtracts points based on current market prices, reshaping the podium. Carwow’s editor-friendly format mixes playful banter—like Graeme’s ladder gag and Max’s Land Cruiser bravado—with genuine off-road insight, including how diff locks and traction control influence outcomes. The session ends with a reassessment: money matters, and the final tally reshuffles the final ranking. Graeme’s verdict and the side-by-side cost comparison deliver a practical takeaway for buyers weighing off-road merit against price. Overall, the episode blends entertaining competition with real-world lessons on what to expect from both old-school and modern rigs in tough terrain.
Key Takeaways
- The Jeep Wrangler dominates the final ruts and rock-crawl segments, accumulating the most points across heats (ultimately winning 17 total).
- Powerful confidence comes from experience: Max’s Land Cruiser proves strong, especially in uphill and timed runs, but consistency lags behind the Jeep in some challenges.
- The Touareg surprises in the uphill and speed sections, earning high marks for raw pace relative to its older platform.
- The Grenadier struggles with limited diff-lock functionality in its stock setup, influencing its performance and scoring in several tests.
- A post-competition price-adjustment twist shows the winner by value isn’t the same as by raw performance, reshuffling the podium after comparing current market prices.
- Diff locks, low-range gearing, and traction control interplay crucially in tight, rocky, and muddy sections, dictating traction more than horsepower alone.
- The final cost comparison emphasizes that overall value (price-to-performance) can invert the perceived winner when you consider real-world ownership costs.
Who Is This For?
Ideal for off-road enthusiasts and buyers weighing purpose-built overlanders against traditional 4x4s. Also useful for fans of Carwow who enjoy practical tests that blend capability with real-world value.

NOW, YES, GRAEME. WHAT A WIN IN A SERIES OF off-road challenges between some overlanding spec modified off-roaders. So, I've got this Jeep Wrangler, an old Volkswagen Tuareg, an old Toyota Land Cruiser, and this Inos Grenadier. Well, let's find out. I'm Watson. You're watching Car Wow. Now, the way this video is going to work is that we're going to compete in various challenges. The winner of each challenge gets four points. The person who comes second gets three points. Person who comes third gets two points. and the person who comes last gets one point. If any car doesn't finish the challenge, he gets no points.
The car with the most points at the end wins. Simple as that. Now, we're going to start with this uphill drug race. We're going to go in heat. This is the first heat. The winner of this heat will go against the winner of the next heat. And then the two losers will then go headto-head to see how the cars rank overall. Right then, let's do this. We have Max from Driven Plus who's going to be driving his very own Land Cruiser. So, you have more power, a bit less weight. So, you should win, shouldn't you?
Yeah. Even if I don't, I'm still going to be pretty smug because I'm in a Land Cruiser and it's the best car here. It is actually. God, this heater is making a lot of noise. What's that? There's a mount down here that's really rattly. Before we race, if you want to compare the car stats, pause the video now to check out the table. Okay, let's do it. Three, two, one. I love how Graham does that. Lost this by a mile. Well, Max, you were so confident over there. You just totally eased off at the top, didn't you?
I don't think you'll be able to ease off when you have your next race, though. I did ease off. And I didn't expect it to give me so much power, but that's what you get from a good V8. In the second heat, we have the Tuare against the Jeep. What will happen? My money is on the Jeep. I think if there was anybody in the tent, they banged her head. I couldn't be more wrong. That twar absolutely flew up there. That was madness. Right now, we're going to have a race between the Inos and the Jeep to see which one comes in last place.
And then we'll have a race between the two winners for the decider. Right. Hopefully I can win one. And I'm not going to come last. So here we go. 3 2 1 go. Blime me. Almost had Graham. I almost killed Graeme. Oh my god, this came last. That's in third place. Let's find out which car is the winner. And bizarrely, it's between the two older cars. Who knew? My money now after seeing it is on that crazy Tuare cuz it's just so quick. But who knows? Let's go. 3 2 1 I called it correctly. We got four points to the Tuare egg.
We've got three points to the Land Cruiser, two points to the Jeep, and just one to the Inos Grenadier. But what will happen in the next challenge? It's going to be trickier this one. Right, this next challenge, we're going to drive around this course that goes up a muddy slope, round a tree, round through a water splash, and back to here. And Graeme is going to time us. cars will be ranked according to their times. So, I'm going to go first because um the Grenadier is in last place. So, let's do it. Wait. Well, this doesn't like to steer particularly, but come on.
Come on. I know it's slippy up here. Steady around here. Don't crash the car, Watson. We get some power up here. Then break here so I don't go to that rock. Then break here and get round here quickly. Come on. Come on. Come on. You can do it. Oh, come on in. Watch out the rocks. Ah, what do I do? Ooh. 2638. It's all right. That's all right. Benchmark set. Is it going to be good enough? I'm not sure. Jeep's up. He's flying up there. He's fast around there, isn't he? God, he absolutely obliterated me.
He did a 22.2. That's going to be hard to beat. Right, let's get the next car. Toyota Land Cruiser Max. That was very, very quick. Right. Yeah. So, you're going to have to go hell for lever, Graeme. Yes. 22.2. A little present here. Just start the timer 5 minutes later. Pass here, mate. It cost more than a five. It's at least £650. Well, I've got 20 for something else, mate. All right, Quicker than I was. Oh, no. It slowed down a bit there. Oh, do you know what? You did really well there. I think if you hadn't bottled it at the top, you could have won.
That's horrendous up there. 23.8. Right, let's get the TW again cuz that car is fast. This could be the winner. Go. Oh, hello. Whoa. Oh. Oh. Okay. Right. So, got to be slower. You were slower than both the Jeep and the Land Cruiser. 25.28. But you beat me. So, you still got I'll take that. Yeah. You still got two points. So, one point to the Inos, two points to the Tuareg, three points to the Land Cruiser, and four points to the Jeep. So far, then the scores are six points for the Jeep, six points for the Toyota, six points for the Volkswagen, and just two points for the Grenadier.
Maybe I can pick things up on the next challenge. The next course is to drive up these bumpy steps under the guidance of Graham. And then we're going to turn around at the top and come down the other side, which is more extreme. Now, this is not a race. Graeme is going to grade us for finesse, control as we test the cars traction and their ground clearance and the driver's skill. I'm going to go first because I came last last time. Don't know what that sign means. Oh no. Oh, I don't want to be disqualified cuz it' be nil.
I'm going to go back a bit. Back a little bit. Go you now. It's cuz the traction control's got no traction control on it. It's just front and front. Front and back wheels spinning. So, put the traction control on. Yeah, put the traction control on. Okay. So, I need to unlock the central diff somehow. Let's put it into neutral. I'm in low range mode now. That might help. Oh, there we go. Traction should be on now. No, she ain't going up. Basically, what's happening? That front wheel and that back wheel are spinning. Ah. So, you cross axle.
Cross axle. Oh no, I'm cross axled. What do I do? Do I roll back down? Roll back. Put the ring in reverse and go back. Yeah. Is that it? No. Come and have another go. You can have another go if you want. You ready? Yeah. Go on. I don't mind. Not over till it's over. Go. Do you know what, Graeme? Stop laughing at me. Get I'm laughing at the car. Get yourself in here. This won't go up with me. Come on. I'll I'll wave me hands about. It won't go up. Come on, Graeme. Yes, Graeme.
She didn't like that. She made a lot of bings and bongs. She got to the top. Now, it's back to amateur hour. What's that mean? Grading. This is much better when gravity's on its side. Right. Hopefully it's not just going to be me that needs Graeme's assistance. Let's find out. Fast as you can then, Danny. Flat out. Yeah. Go on. As fast as you dare. Come on. Oh, look at that. Oh, that is cool. me. That's why you need rear diff locks. Slowly a little bit more. That was a bit scary. Right, Max? Just go as fast as you can.
What you running? Central diff lock. Um, rear diff lock. Yeah, the central diff lock. This doesn't come with the rear, unfortunately. Oh, really? Yeah. You have to put it on after the market. And then I'm in second gear. So, you got like a second but second gear button down here. No, low range mode. Yeah, it's in low range, but it just puts it in second gear. Do badly cuz I need to not come last again. Keep it cruising. Keep it going. He's stuck already. Oh no. He's going. He's going. He's going. He's going. He's going.
He's off. He's off. I'm not easing off, Matt. I'm still going. Look at the traction control doing its job. That was the problem with my Inos when I was in low range mode. Traction just didn't do the job. Oh, it's stuck. Oh, it's gripping. It's gripping. Look at it. Look at it. Look at those tires finally grip at the front. Oh, that is pretty cool. Look at that. Oh, keep going. Look at him working away at it. Right, he's off. Let it go back a little bit. Grant, back a bit more. Give us some. That's all you need to do.
Power the heck out of it. Now he's off. He needs to be more brutal on the throttle, didn't he? That was better than the Inos. It was better than the Inios. Steady. She's going to slide. Get ready. That added weight on the top puts the overlanders under a bit of strain, but that was absolutely fine. Now it's Alex in the Jeep. Alex, this is your chance to get into the lead, right? Cuz it's the Jeep, the Toyota, and the Volkswagen are all equal. But they both struggled a little bit. If you fly up here, this is Wrangler territory.
It is Wrangler territory. You got you got your diff locks on. Lockers in all of them. Sway bar disconnect really. You got every and it all works and like with the Inos. Good. throttle all the way. Wow. Look at that. Look at that chassis articulation. It's crazy. Wow. Look at that. Wa. It was like it was just driving up a normal road. Here we go. Graeme's not really having to do anything here. Yeah. Not doing anything on that one. We know the Jeep won. Well, we know the Jeep's won and then it's probably the Volkswagen, right?
And then the Land Cruis and then and then the Inos. And then the Inos. So that means four points to the Jeep, three points to the Volkswagen, two points to the Toyota, and just one for the Inos. So far then the scores are 10 points to the Jeep, nine points to the Volkswagen, eight points to the Toyota, and just three to the Inos. Graeme, can I get some extra points? cuz my car is the only one with a ladder. It's supposed to be an overlander. Look, I can climb up away from the lions. Extra points.
It's worth at least one. Okay, so we get extra points for the extra point for having a ladder. Now, we're going to do a rock crawl. Once again, I'm going to go first because um I lost the last challenge. Now, I need to point something out to you. So, this Grenadier has a little bit of a fault. You see, it is fitted with a central diff lock, and I can lock that in manually. It also has front and rear diff locks, but for some reason they're not working. When I press the buttons, which are up here, I get a flashing warning sign and it says, "Oh, diff lock doesn't work." Also, I can activate the off-road mode, which gives you improved traction control for when you're off-roading.
So, I can either run with a central diff lock on, which disables traction control, or I can run without the diff lock on, and that means I have traction control. So, I think I'm going to go with traction control and no central diff lock for this run. It's probably better to have traction control. I'm going to go in low range mode for control. Here we go. Oh, straight ahead. Slow it down. Slowly. She's going to drop that way. Just a little bit. Yeah. Good. Keep coming. Going to drop again. Oh, I don't like it when Greg goes like worries me.
Parking sensor is going crazy cuz we're near some rocks. A little bit straight. There you go. Straight there. Straight. Just realized I got a center marker on the steering wheel like a racing car. Graham. That was actually okay, wasn't it? Was All the wheels stayed on the ground so she's all right. She's got traction control. The diff locks are doing what they're supposed to do. There's no diff lock. There's no diff lock at all. No. Oh, I've done very well then. There we go. So, the diff locks front and rear don't work. I can't engage them.
You got So, I got a central diff lock, but I but but I haven't engaged it. All right. Because that kills my traction control. And so, I just went with I've got a choice. I can have a central diff lock and no traction control or no central diff lock and traction control. So, I went for that latter option. Very good. Okay. Right. Let's see how the others do. All right. NMAX. It's quite easy. But you haven't got any lift or anything like that. I haven't got a lift. So, yeah. Well, you've got live axles all around, haven't you?
I haven't. I've got independent front. Oh, posh. For that luxurious ride on the road. At least you'll have a nicer drive back than I will. Right. Go on then. Good luck. Okay. Or is he going to bottom out? Going to drop again. Oops. Going to drop again. Little bit that way. Going to drop that way. Seems to be doing a good job here. It's going to be interesting to see how Graeme grades it between the Land Cruiser and the Inos. Danny, you're next. Hello Right. Keep coming. You ready? He comes. I don't know how Graeme is going to judge this.
Actually, there's nothing to differentiate them. Someone needs to do something a bit different. Right, Alex? Every car's made it across. Why were you looking at that? Looks pretty interesting, doesn't it? I think we can do it. Well, you want to do the the hard bit? Yeah. Yeah, why not? Okay, so if you do the hard bit, you'll get a bonus point if you complete that. But if you get stuck, you'll get no points. Fair game. You going to do the hard bit? Yeah, we'll do the hard bit. Mad. See how we go. Ready? Oh. Oh, you have got an inch.
yeah. This is cool. Start to climb now. Come on. That's it. Keep turning into me. Slow and steady. Wicked. Yes. Let's get out of the way just in case it topples over. Now hold it there. Going to drop. Oh, this is going to be the one. You might bottom out here if you get this wrong. Oh, I think you'll bottom out. Go backwards. Go backwards. Come here. Go back. You were just touching then. Oh, here it is. OH, fly me. That was cool. There you go. Well done. That was some proper off-roading. That one clearly.
So, five points to the Jeep. Then which came second with three points. So, second, I'm going to give it to the Grenadier. What? Because it did it without with nothing switched on. No, not even the driver switched on. Okay. So, three points to the Grenadier. Finally, some points. And third place, Land Cruiser. Land Cruiser. and uh the Volkswagen cuz it bottomed out. So, where are we standing as we go into the final challenge? The total scores are seven for the Inos, 10 for the Volkswagen, 10 for the Toyota, and 15 for the Jeep. As we go into the final challenge, you might think that nothing can beat the Jeep, but I have a little bit of a twist which will happen at the end.
So, it might not win after all. So, this final challenge is just about outright power, speed, and traction cuz we're going to rise up this slope as quick as possible with minimal slip, and we need to impress Graeme with our performance. Okay, we're going to have Danny go in first in the Vault Dragon. Danny has never driven up here before, so um he doesn't know what's at the top. It's quite tight at the top, but we'll see how he does. Good luck. Wow. Well, sounded the best. No other car is going to sound as good as that.
Next, it's the Land Cruiser. Ready? Here we go. I think he went a bit too steady up there. Um uh made it I'm not sure you made it but very steady and slow. Okay, I'm going to just raz it. Do you like my complete balance at the top? So I just walked over. Yes. I like the panic look as you nearly slid into the wall there. There was no panic there. Right now it's for the Jeep. This is pretty simple, Alex. Just raz it there as quick as you can. You got to be quicker than the other cars.
Don't kill That didn't even look like it was driving up a slope. It just was easy. I don't know. All right. And Graeme, so you've seen all the cars perform. Yes. Um, it was all about speed and action. So, the fastest one up there y was the tow tow rag. The tow rag. So, the Volkswagen. So, four points to the Volkswagen. Second fastest. Second fastest the Grenadier. So, that's three points in the Grenadier. I'm going to go the Jeep. The next one. Two points to the Jeep. And the Land Cruiser last and one point to the Land Cruiser.
So, where are we with the final scores? Overall, the Jeep has won. It scored 17 points. The Volkswagen 14 points, the Toyota 11 points, and the Inos was last with a score of 10 points. However, often when you're off-roading, it's not just about how well it performs, it's how well it performs for the money. So, now this is the twist. What we're going to do is compare how much each of these cars cost in their current status. And then we'll be taking points off depending on how much they cost compared to the others. Right? The car which costs the most is going to have four points taken off.
The second one, three points per taken off and so on and so forth. So I've got to ask you then, Alex, how much are you in it for for this vehicle? Um, you can pick this up for about 60k. 60K with all the bits on it. So if I said 60k now, you'd sell it to me. Yeah, I'll bank transfer you. Really? Deal? No. Okay. You mean to? I don't want it. Okay. Right then. The Inos with the roof tent and everything. What we saying, Rory? What would you reckon, Alex? So that as it sits there now 50k 50k with everything on it.
Yeah. Okay. This car here with everything on it, £50,000, right? And Max, your car with the roof box and everything and the tires, how much does it cost you? You're probably looking at about 24 grand. £24,000. And finally, Danny, how much would you sell this complete setup for right now to me? I've got 15 grand in it. So with everything? Yeah. Well, there we go. So, it's going to be four points off the Jeep, three points off the Inios, two points off the Land Cruiser, and one point off the Volkswagen. After we take value into account, it's actually a tie between the Jeep and the Volkswagen.
Both cars scored 13 points. The Toyota is third with nine points and the Inos came last with seven points. I hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, give it a like.
