Summary
Linus and the crew roll out another AMD Ultimate Tech Upgrade, this time focused on Sven’s basement setup. Sven trades up to a gaming PC powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 9850 X3D and a Meg B850 Tomahawk Wi‑Fi motherboard, paired with a Corsair DDR5 kit and a 9800 X3D-class CPU for maximum FPS. The build also includes practical upgrades like a UPS for power stability, a quieter air-cooling solution, and additional periphery such as an XT4 camera and a new sound setup to boost streaming quality. A RetroTink 4K Pro is brought in to pair Sven’s CRT-loving retro gaming habits with modern displays, demonstrating how to preserve classic gaming on contemporary screens. Throughout, the team banters about budgets, living arrangements, and project logistics, while revealing how they source parts (and sometimes even other people’s items) to assemble the upgrade. The video blends hands-on assembly with product discussions, RAM choices, and a playful reveal of the final gaming/streaming rig that sits at the heart of Sven’s upgraded basement suite. AMD sponsorship is acknowledged as the team encourages viewers to enter the giveaway for three Ryzen 7 9850 X3D CPUs.

Sven is a member of our business team and certified man of culture. I mean, look at the sound system that he invested in for his Wii U and Xbox 360. He plays his retro games on an actual CRT, not a bougie upscaler, and he deployed it in the most '90s possible corner of his basement suite. To be clear, he has modern technology. He just keeps it unopened in this cupboard. Yeah. What's up with that? I was waiting for my upgrade. YEAH, YOU WERE. That's right, guys. We're back with another AMD Ultimate $5,000 tech upgrade. We've got a ton to do today.
Sven is getting a new gaming PC powered by an AMDX 3D CPU, new audio gear, and of course, some retro gaming goodies and more to add to what is probably a fair number of items that were liberated from work. You're not going to find anything. Yeah, I am. I found something already. Here's one of those LTT CarPio wrist rests. It's not an asset type. There's no way you bought it. No, I definitely did not. That's Yeah, I know. I mean, that that I purchased with Demand money for free. Yeah. Jerry rig knife. I got that like a week after I started.
Yeah, you got it. I'm going to find nothing. I literally haven't even moved yet. We're back with yet another AMD Ultimate Tech upgrade giveaway. And this one's for the gamers out there because we are giving away three AMD Ryzen 7 9850 X3D processors. If you're building a system for maximum FPS, ultra smooth gameplay, and competitive performance, this is the kind of CPU that you love to have at the center of your setup. This thing is built to dominate in gaming. The Ryzen 9850 X3D is the fastest gaming CPU in the world. Continuing the legacy of the 9800 X3D, but now up to 400 MHz faster.
With 8 core, 16 threads, and boost clocks hitting up to 5.6 GHz, you can play just about anything. Whether that's Cavetory like Sven or the latest and greatest AAA titles. To enter, all you got to do is click the link in the video description for a chance to win. Thanks again AMD for sponsoring this series and good luck everyone entering the giveaway. Are you going to play for us today? No, I bought that with the intention of learning how to play and I bought like a course online, but I do the the thing where you get into a new hobby and then you immediately get disinterested after like a month.
Moving this way, I'm having a hard time figuring out what you actually need as an upgrade. You've got a PlayStation 5. You've got a sick gaming rig. You've got an amazing audio setup. Yep. Every console under the sun. Yep. Even this TV looks like really new. Uh B4 OLED. Last year I bought it. Why did this guy get an upgrade? Yeah, what the hell, man? It's a random chance. Seems unfair. I don't think so. You wouldn't. Well, deserving or not, we're doing Oh, wow. This is really heavy. Yeah, there's a lot of stuff in here.
It's probably the battery backup. Okay. Are you going to move? No. Good luck. How am I supposed to get out of here? New motherboard, MacBook Air. Oh, yeah, right. I guess you picked this before the Neo existed. I don't really need the Neo. The M5's nice. I mean, it's certainly nice. It's just a lot more expensive. Yeah, it does. It's for my girlfriend, though. She deserves it. Nice. I can't give you too much credit for it, though. Why? Well, I mean, because you already bought everything for yourself, so I buy her a lot, too. Okay.
Ooh, XT4 camera. Yeah, I didn't go XT5 cuz it has 40 megapixel sensor and you can't uh do that with the screen. XT5, it only like pivots or tilts down. Yeah, it's really They took away the full They did. Yeah, I'm really excited about this. Oh, okay. Let's open it later. Oh, wow. Oh, that's so mean. Well, it's mean to them. Oh, what's in the box? What else we got? I got some GameCube and Wii games. Oh, you'll not believe how much those cost. It can't cost that much. I mean, look how small the disc is.
together. They were 400. And they'll sit nicely on the shelf. That's all they're going to do, isn't it? Of course. No, I'll play them. I'll play them. Surely, you have more computer parts, Yeah. Here it is. And don't call me Shirley. Wait, are we only upgrading your motherboard and CPU? Yeah, I have a uh GPU from a company that shall not be named, and it's good enough. Oh, no. You got a cooler? Yeah. Yeah. And a cooler, too, cuz I have a liquid cooler right now, and I I hate it. What do you hate about liquid cooling?
Air cooling is uh it's just nicer. It's quieter. You don't have to deal with pump noise or anything like that. Yeah. Okay. Liquid coolers are kind of a pain to set up. How do you have so much awesome stuff? I pay literally nothing in rent. Well, not literally nothing, but close to nothing. HD 6X headphones. Fantastic. RIP master. Like secret lab desk and like it's actually seems like pretty nice chair, although I don't recognize it. Why don't you pay anything in rent? I live with my mom. Have you seen housing prices? Well, let's get started.
Oh, okay. Let me see if I can Let me see if I can figure out how to do this. Can I Can I turn it off first? Oh, I mean, yeah, I guess. Cool. Yeah, we should also unplug stuff from the back so you don't I mean, sure. Every single one of my cables. Help me, step bro. I'm under Spence's computer. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Time out. Time out. Oh my god, you're stressing. Can I do it? You're stressing me out. No, I got it. I got it. Oh my god. I've never dropped a computer before.
Yeah. Okay. Editor, roll the clips. Now you're getting mouse. That You've built a PC before, right? I've built quite a lot of PCs. Yeah. It's not too bad. It's a lot of RGB, so it makes the wiring difficult. That's not that bad. Really? Wow. I mean, like you said, there's a lot of RGB in here from child protection services. Who would call their brand CPS? That is that is a vile name for it. Well, wait. What am I doing this for? I was going to say I can do this. All right, cool. I'll critique you.
You can just stand here. I'll critique. Oh, god. You know what? No, I'm going to go get your UPS because again, I meant what I said before. Man of culture. I know a thing about culture. What did you do? Nothing. What was that? Oh, it's the cooler one. One of Sven's investments for this upgrade is a battery backup. This is one of those things that doesn't make your FPS go higher. It doesn't make your colors on your monitor pop more. But what it does do is it makes it so that in the event of a power outage or if you have dirty power, it'll also help kind of clean it up a little on its way into your PC and other sensitive electronics.
I'm going to get this set up. Yeah, I'm not using it down here. I have an unrated server upstairs that it's going to go for. Oh, that's actually even smarter, right? You You should also have one for your desk. Yeah, maybe one day. Sven's mom wouldn't let us film upstairs. She was all like, "SO, she doesn't act like that." AND HE WAS LIKE, "MOM, I TOLD them we got to film a video." Making me nervous, dude. It's okay. Good. I like performance anxiety. I get that, too. Don't worry. Twins. Ask your doctor about Seialis for daily use in a 30 tablet free trial.
I found the spot where it goes and I was just going to connect the internal battery, but I just I wanted to do it down here. Okay. Your mom saw me up there and SHE WAS LIKE, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING UP HERE?" IT'S FINE. NOW HE KNOWS HOW it feels to work for him. Oh, come on now. Are you going to hook it up to that battery any day? I know. I'm just I'm checking to make sure that that's all they This just seems This seems like an unhinged thing for them to expect a user to do.
Like it's very common. I don't know. Like this. Yeah. Yeah, I think every single APC battery I've done is like that. Are we taking the RAM out? What else are we taking out of here? I actually have a question. From what I've read online, you're not really supposed to use 46 of RAM with AMD processor. You will get less performance out of it. So, it depends on do you want the sheer volume of RAM or do you want the highest performance? Definitely highest performance. Okay, then we could probably get away with just the two sticks.
I have a better idea. I have a computer in that closet over there that also has DDR5 in it. Okay. You did not need an upgrade. You're sitting on a gold mine here. We can use whatever RAM you want, Sven. Okay, we'll use that RAM. That RAM? Yeah. Yeah, that RA. Go get it. Oh my. You have a whole other computer. Yeah, this is my girlfriend's. She doesn't really play games. Massive upgrade compared to what we had before. And all we got to do is power it on. And Oh, SOMEONE SPOTTED ME. AND STAY OUT.
Oh jeez. I pulled it off. I got the UPS upgrade done. In all seriousness though, that was about the most live, love, laugh place that I've ever been in. That's my cat's pillow. And whole thing's a bit I've never even met Savan's mother. She's very nice lady. Love you, Mom. You ever feel like people who roast their helpers shouldn't get that much help? Did you hear him just now? He said skill issue because you didn't take out his power supply. He didn't tell you to take out. Oh, you know what? Yeah. There. There's a skill issue.
You like that? Oh, this is great. This is the easiest PC build I've ever done. Oh, yeah. I'm done. What's up with that? I I assigned him to this. Why are you doing it? I needed moral support. Meanwhile, I was braving the dragon's den. WHOA. NO. We all saw you didn't hit it that hard. No workers comp. It's a good thing there's no stairs for you to fall down here. Totally ate it. But there is. I Yeah, that's why we only let me on the car now. Safety first. Oh, you want to go? Yeah. Please.
I think there's a sticker on him somewhere. Yeah. Two men lift. Well, that's over like 40 lbs. Elijah, it's not even a thing. We were just having a conversation earlier today about how like Lionus makes fat jokes without ever No. No, stop. I'm going to I'm going to fit. You make overweight jokes without ever saying it specifically. No, it's going in the jet video. Maximum weight 220 lb. Go ahead. Say go on. Then there's the other time at my house where you pull out the Connect. You're like, damn. I know you ain't playing Connect games because you're way too young.
Who does play Connect to be fair. To be fair. Then there's the other one where we were in the we were in the thermal chamber and you're like, "Yeah, but you're probably warmer. You've got more layers." No, I said you have more insulation because you're wearing He's wearing thicker clothes. Oh, okay. Fair enough. Let's get the power supply going. Where's it go? In the case. Well, in the new case, right here. Oh, thank god it doesn't go upstairs. Yeah. You wouldn't want to go back up there, would you? I was afraid to have another love pillow thrown at me.
Ooh. What was what was wrong with the made in China PC case anyway? It doesn't really fit the the the black theme I got going on here. And this one has nice wood on the front, which as you can see by the speakers, I like a good walnut vibe. Yeah, he likes that good wood. The real wood, apparently. REAL GOOD WOOD. YEAH. OH, SORRY. I knocked your good wood off. Why is it all like mangled? What did you do? Oh my god. Oh god, it actually broke. Can't believe this. Is it the peg or something?
Oh yeah, it's these guys. Oh, he loves the pegs from the Goodwood. Wait, why am I doing this again? I don't know. I mean, I like it. He likes to watch. No. All right, let's get a let's get let's get a motherboard. We've gone with the Meg B850 Tomahawk Wi-Fi motherboard. Man, B850 seems to be just the way to go, unless you need a ton of PCIe expansion. Unlike the competition, AMD allows overclocking even on their mainstream chipsets. So, you're giving up nothing in terms of performance. And I mean, you you've got so much IO on this thing.
Pretty stacked. Two front USB 3s, one front USB C, three PCI 16X slots. Got good lord. How many M.2s are in here? two four four M.2s and four 10 gig USB ports. What? Five 10 gig USB port. 5 gig networking. This is a really nice board. What What's one of these worth? Um, it kind of fluctuates in price recently. Oh, I missed that. This is the Tomahawk Max Wi-Fi. Oh, so this is like bougie board. I don't need the Wi-Fi, but it's really nice for onboard Bluetooth. Wi-Fi 7. Yeah. Anybody else noticed that motherboards have sort of quietly become kind of reasonably priced again?
Cuz I don't mind spending $200 plus dollars on something with this kind of feature set. Like latest everything. You got the button to release your PCIe slot. Like you got everything. I'm actually really excited. This is a 9800 X3D. You can say the core count and clock count cuz I don't remember it. Eight cores. And it boosts over 5 GHz. But the more important part is that it has over 100 megs of cache. Yes, that 3D vcache is critical to getting the maximum performance in games. Now, at the resolution you play at, realistically, do you need an X3D in order to get acceptable frame rates?
No. But if you want something that is going to give you the absolute maximum in performance, you're not quite there either. The newer 9850 X3 is actually a little bit faster. Well, he does know what he's doing. He's just How many computers have you built, Sven? Uh, I would say upwards of 40. Oh, okay. So, you This guy builds I build I build. Do you like build for friends and stuff? Yeah. Yeah, I build for friends. Used to do it for old co-workers at the last place that I worked at. It's just kind of a good hobby of mine.
Cool. Yeah. Where'd you work before? Uh, I worked in insurance. Oh, this is a big upgrade. Thanks, AMD. No, he meant upgrade in like the chop, but I pretended I meant I pretended he meant the AMD upgrade. I mean, this is a big upgrade, too. For our RAM, we've got a kit of 5600 mega transfer per second CL36 memory from Corsair. Uh, is this the best pairing for a 9800 X3D? No. But, as we mentioned earlier, it doesn't matter as much as you might think at reasonable gaming resolutions. And ain't nobody going to go buy more DDR5 right now.
Ooh, not when I have it sitting in the closet. With that said, cracks are starting to show a little bit. Turns out Sam Alman's word is not worth much. It was just a piece of paper. It was That's all it was. All right, let's get this cooler installed. Cool. Blur. Elijah's worried about run time for this video. So, here's me introducing the chair. Dukaka. I'm 100% cutting this from the video now. Just out of spite. Now you can build the chair. Yes, sir. How'd they know he was going to do it? What do you mean?
You can sit cross-legged. I can't. I actually can't either. Really? I thought you could. No, you were a gymnast. Were. Yeah. It doesn't go away though, right? The yellow sticker. Oh, he was referring to the yellow sticker. Don't let him gaslight you. Look at that smile. He turns away from the camera. so he can get the smile out. And now he's too scared to turn back. Turn back right now. Look how red he's getting. Warning, heavy object. Twoerson lift required. On the chair. That's the label on the chair. Let's go. How much thermal paste do you usually put on for these new ones?
Um, more than that. Oh, really? Thank you. Yeah. Keep going. Now, move down a bit, though. Yeah. Right there. A little more. Oh, don't move down more. Oh, you keep Okay, a little more. Little more. Yeah, right there. More goop. That's good. That's perfect. Yeah, that's good. But wipe it off. Oh my god. What is this? What is going on here? Oh, it's stuck, dude. Oh my gosh. Perfect. Do we need a shaft extension? Um, not me. I don't. I do. I like your custom screwdriver LTX. Um, no. It was when we had a bunch of them left over and CW did the day where we could spend our merch budget on customized screwdrivers.
Oh, all right. Okay, fine. So, it was it was legit then. There was money paid for it. company money, but yeah, sort of. Everyone gets credit at the company store and they get paid. Do we? We do. All right, let's do it. What are we doing? Putting it in. And we want to put the SSDs in first. Oh, right. Yes. How fast are these SSDs? Uh, very fast. You have a 4 terbte 850X. It's a fantastic deal. I got it for like 300 bucks a couple years ago. Speaking of that, do you want to see what I saw at Canadian Best Buy?
What did you see? This is a 4 TBTE for $2,000 Canadian. That's It's basically the same thing. That one just has a heat sink on it. These these are CAD prices. Hey, put that back. Right, man. It's not a new thing, but I can still love that modern cases just have all the usual standoffs pre-installed. Make sure this motherboard has all the usual holes. Sure does. Got the built-in IO shield. Like, how easy was that? And it's just done. So easy. We don't need to screw anything else. It's done. Forget it. I'm All right. See you later.
Maybe now's a good time to call out lmg.gg/flowplane where some of the extras and too hot for TV stuff tends to end up. What a clean layout this is. I know. It's so cool. That's awesome. I love it. There's so much air flow, too. It's awesome. Can't believe we're already installing the GPU. It is amazing how easy a modern build can be if you just issue the whole RGB thing. Yeah, don't get RGB. It's not worth it. Or at least if you do, do it like tastefully like on the RAM, maybe a little case lighting somewhere.
But my last computer had I think like nine fans that were all RGB. What a nightmare to deal with. Oh, beauty. Yeah, right. Nice. And and real wood bonus. It's a beast. It is a beast. Yeah. I mean, look at the beauty and the beast right there. All in one convenient package. Woah. Woah. Woah. Woah. What you're doing right now is not okay. What? That's extremely bad luck. Where are we going to put it? We're just going to We're just going to put it on the floor and we're going to hook everything up and then it's going to work and then we can put the panel on.
We can put the brace on. Are we going? Yeah, we're going for it. We're going to find out if it works. Why do I always end up on the floor under employees desk? I mean, I could raise it up. Oh, yeah. Okay. Well, no, cuz then the whole computer will have to go. Yeah, you just you just got to hold it. Yeah, you don't want to raise it up. No, no, this is good. That's loud as hell. That's a lot of air flow. That's okay. I got fan control. Wo, these 180 ms do like 1,500 RPM, which is not a lot on like an 80 or a 120 mil fan.
For a 180 mil fan, that's a freaking ton of air. Hey, wait, wait, wait. Hey, I can't see it, but I assume that it's missed the BIOS. Damn. It looks like it's just dead under a crack. Please turn off. Locked in. Okay, you've Okay, you forgot to pull the Sorry before you Hey, this looks pretty cool. Yeah, it looks pretty good. It looks pretty good. Not going to lie, the result is worth the effort. That's what I'm saying. And now look, all my cables are nicely just tucked right here. Oh wow. You weren't kidding when you said you don't like cable management.
Can we put Elijah on getting drivers and everything installed while we look at some of the new stuff? Sure. Okay, cool. Blankets, rug. Solid. Where do you want it? Uh, it's going in the hallway between the uh bedroom and the bathroom. Okay, cool. I hope it measured it right. Okay. Y, that's perfect. I'm going to leave it like that forever now. You should be more specific. Would you like it flat? I would love it flat. Okay, I got it. I got it. No, I'm way ahead of you. Exactly. In I'm way ahead of you. Okay.
Okay. Quality. Here's a fine microphone arm. It's certainly one of the arms of time. Yeah. Uh, do you want to install it? Yeah, sure. What's your mic for? Streaming on and off and then I would like to get into content creation. I just want to talk about things that I enjoy like video games or anime, movie, TV shows, kind of whatever. Um, I'm really into like long video essays. I'll probably never make, you know, like a 4-hour long one. I'll start off something small, but I also like just like having good audio. You know, when you're sitting in like a Discord call with someone and just have the worst mic imaginable.
I cannot stand that. Like look how horrible this is to put in here. And look how horrible this is. Like sticking up into your face like this. Look at this. This is an HR complaint and I need you to put it back. You know what, Sven? I think he's going to be okay. I think between the two of us, we can lift him up. I think we could, too. Send that footage to Ariana, please. What is she going to do? Lift your spirit. That's not it. Okay, listen. You can't keep getting away with these vague fat shaming.
YOU CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT. NO. NO. I don't want you to have any shame. S and I both want to lift you up. R320. Similar to the ones you use on the Wan Show set. You have the RE20. This is like the baby brother of it. Baby stepbrother of it. I mean, Electrovoice is just generally expensive, right? How much did you spend on this? Um, probably like 300 US. It's a nice one, though. I mean, yeah, for for how good they sound. Like, no no complaints there, but like do I need it? No.
You know, a lot of these AMD Ultimate tech upgrades, people like really like the guest co-host. Yes. I feel like they're going to hate you. Because you have so much cool. I do. I do have a lot of cool I No, I'm not going to deny it. I'm very I am very blessed and privileged to have all this cool stuff. We didn't even talk about like all your vinyls and stuff. Yeah, that's a money sink if I've ever been in one. And you have? And I have. See how many Switches this man owns? He even has Nintendo games to go with them.
I'm so scared of you dropping it right now. There's a joke here. I know there is. Have a seat. Let's see. How's it look? Feels great. I feel like I can talk right into it. Fist away distance or whatever. Hello. Okay. What about when you're like using your computer though? Like does that kind of Does it kind of work? Oh wow. Yeah. No, it works out. This is actually like awesome. Then you can just give her give her the old Yeah. Now, when I play Dark Souls 2, I can have a beautiful sounding voice for all my friends.
Now, it's finally time. The one you were excited about. Wa. So, this is the RetroTink 4K Pro. I think we did a video on it a couple years ago when it first released. And this thing is not though, but it's so cool. And Mike Chi was a homie and he sent all these extra cables with it for like best possible video quality, too. Thank you, Mike Chi. Don't Yeah, don't let me have your fun. Show Show it off. So, what does it do? Can you explain for the normies what this does? Yeah, RetroTink 4K has an FPGA in it that upscales any component uh VGA SCR composite composite into 4K 1440p, 1080p, basically every resolution you can imagine under the sun.
And then it has a bunch of other built-in functions for uh managing the incoming signal and making it look good on a modern display. Yeah. So that instead of I mean credit to that CRT, beautiful, wonderful technology. It's pretty small. Being able to hook the retro consoles up to the big OLED. What's one of these worth again? 750 US. And it's it's not like an analog system where it's also a game console. No, you need the classic consoles to play with this. All right. Well, we're going to have to see it in action. Yeah, let's try it out.
Remember in the intro when I promised he was a man of culture? Goof Troop. Is it two-player? Uh, I think so, actually. Yeah, we can play Goof Troop. All right, let's try it out. What's the difference between 1 P and 2P and 1 P and 2 P? Which character we play? no, I'll be Max. Is Max the younger one? Yeah, Max is the shorter one. Makes sense. Here, just just stun lock him. I got him. I got him. All right. Hey, gotcha. What the heck, man? Stage clear. Goof trooper right there. Goof. He's a real goof.
Why does that keep happening? And then this is fun for you young kids. Oh yeah. Symbols for passwords. This game did not have onboard memory to save your progress. So it just gave you a password and you would just enter it the next time you launch the game. Thanks Capcom. How's your PC setup though? Let's have a look at how that's performing. What are we testing? Fire up the game. Yeah, I want I want to hear the new mic, too. So, you'll have to get your interface hooked up. Hello. Hello. Hello. This thing is working.
