Summary
Asmongold dives into Blood of the Dawn Walker, a new open-world RPG by Rebel Wolves—the studio formed by developers behind The Witcher 3. Ariana Sharkkeich (writer at Rebel Wolves) frames the game around Cohen, a human-by-day, vampire-by-night protagonist, and showcases early gameplay elements like night-time traversal, vampiric abilities, and the open-world map with points of interest. The clip blends live commentary with quick-tear prompts about combat, perks, infamy, and shrine mechanics, while drawing parallels to Witcher 3’s DLCs, upgrades, and world-building. Asmongold critiques the combat system as “par if not below par” but remains cautiously optimistic, emphasizing the need for a strong narrative to carry the game if the mechanics don’t exceed expectations. He compares Blood of the Dawn Walker’s systems—infamy, edicts, and a calendar-driven open world—to other large titles, noting that good performance at launch is crucial for a new IP. The discussion wanders through editorials on perk design (preferring unique, meaningful upgrades over mere damage boosts), the significance of shrines, and the balance between exploration and player freedom. Overall, the video gives a snapshot of a game that could become a Witcher 3-worthy experience if the story and world-building hold up to the combat and progression groundwork already shown. The release date is teased as “3rd of September,” heightening anticipation for a game that might redefine open-world vampiric RPGs.

This is apparently uh a game like people wanted me to look at this the other day. It came out. I never really got a chance to. So, this is made by the people that made uh what do you call it? Uh they made Witcher 3 and they made a new studio. They're making a new game. It's called Blood of the Dawn Walker. The first trailer was so good. I've been keeping up with the game ever since then. Let's take a look at it. Peggy 18. Hi, my name is Ariana Sharkkeich and I'm one of the writers at Rebel Wolves.
Over you can clearly see this is quite a lot about the game story. I mean, today we'll give you a glimpse of the activities our human by day, vampire by night protagonist Cohen can take on while exploring the open world. Controversy started about this specic form heading point to get a better sense of our surroundings. Yeah. Reaching a vantage point reveals nearby. I do think that like unless it's a huge title like Monster Hunter, having bad performance on release is like a uh it's like a game killer. Like if you if you're not a huge studio like Capcom, you can't afford to have that.
Like you you have to have good performance or everybody's going to downvote the game and then it's not going to get like people are just going to think the game's bad. 5090. Oh, that's Did I Did I say Did I say 4090? I meant to say 5090 opportunities and helps us plan our work on this game then optimize it. It looks great. I want more people to play it. Just gorgeous. Oh, pretty simple. Brave these woods. It's like Assassin's Creed. I say they're chalk full of monsters. Okay. Village of Madagir, Codrin's family's land. Mhm. Maragar Monastery.
Its best days are long behind it. I don't think I'll find anything else here. Let's open them up and check nearby points of interest. I played The Witcher 3 a lot. Some are tied to Princess's officers. I never finished the DLC. Others the hidden mysteries, haunted sides, and shrines used for fast travel, which can also serve as quest objectives. I mean, all this seems like really really like standard. Like I mean, you know, if you've played one of these games, it's like, okay, I get it. This seems really simple. Let's mark one. And DLC is the best part.
Well, I did the other DLC. I'm just halfway through Blood and Wine. I did the uh Heart of Stone. Early in the game, we can unlock a perk that allows us to transform into a wolf and move faster at night. Furry. It's quicker and more agile, though it comes with some limitations. There's also a daytime equivalent, but more on that later. Thought was that someone in trouble? It looks like we've come across a group in need of help. Mhm. Whether we intervene is up to us, and both choices can lead to unexpected output. Damn, we began with death from above, allowing us to eliminate an unsuspecting enemy and gain the upper hand from the start.
The combat's really improved a lot ever since the first uh the first one. This is a lot better than what they've shown. I still think it can get a lot better than this. I I think this is like it went from like 2016 to 2019. I think that it has a ways to go still, but this is like if they release the game with this combat, if the story, the gameplay, and the world building are good enough, this is passable. We have incorporated community feedback, and now there is no need to open the skill wheel to select a previously assigned ability.
Instead, we can use quick selection. Makes sense. Sure. I thought I was done for. done for. So did I. To be fair, wasn't sure I'd get you out of this in time. But you did. Bless you. Bless you. Sakuro came out 2019. Don't make combat by years to recover. No, is a combat game. Restore health by feeding. Human blood is talking about like for an open world RPG. But in this case, this is like an animal. Oh, just eat his ass. But it will do. Feeding increases our corruption level. It's shown next to the health bar at the bottom of the screen.
The higher the corruption level, the more vampiric are unlocked for purchase. Uh-huh. Nearby points of interests are marked on the map and indicated on the compass at the top of the screen. Let's head to the shrine. Okay, here's the shrine damaged, so we can't use it yet. Desecrated. Looks like the shrine's missing its heart, but maybe I could restore it. It's going to be really hard for a game to beat Crimson Desert's open world tracks. It is fresh. Like, I'm going to be curious how good this game is. There's a trail nearby. Let's follow it.
Love this. Yeah, it's that's going to be really hard. A group of Bren already did it. I never played it. So you can attack him even from there. Damn. Damn. Voracious bite allows us to drink blood from an unsuspecting enemy and gain the upper hand at the beginning of combat. But we're not able to drain this enemy fully as his comrades quickly with his aid. So you can only do that to the last guy. Damn. We use Piercing Shriek to briefly stun the weaker opponent, giving us an opportunity to take on his commander. When an enemy blocks and interrupts our attack chain, we can use charge to prevent a counterattack.
Okay. Voracious bite can also be used during combat as an active, allowing us to regenerate some health. Jesus, that did a lot of damage. Holy [ __ ] Hope word of this reaches your master. Was like a mini boss. With the camp destroyed, our infamy increases. More about this in a moment. Uh, let's collect our loot. We found the shrine's missing heart along with a manual that unlocks a new perk, precision. Let's open our inventory and head to the recipes tab. Someone said Witcher Sl. As I mentioned, the manual unlocks a new perk called Once we read it, it becomes available in the character tab.
Let's go there. The exclamation mark indicates that a new perk is available, but we can't purchase it yet. Perks can only be acquired at a shrine by spending experience points, which are earned by completing objectives. And since we finished one, we should be good to go. Oh, she can go back to the shrine. Found the shrine's missing heart. So, we can now fix it. All right, let's head back. Good game sloth. Video game sloth, guys, guys. Welcome. restored. The shrine is rebuilt. We can now use it. Let's start with the perks menu. In the swordmaster abilities, we find precision now available for purchase.
As you can see, it costs both experience. My opinion is that any sort of talent ability that just increases the damage that you do could be replaced with something that's more interesting. Like I I know it's not always possible, but in a general sense, I think unless it's like a really really big boost, like it's something like you take 100% more damage, but you deal 50% more damage, like unless it's a really big like uh you know, red teardrop ring in in Dark Souls or something like that. Uh you know, you probably should should not even have that.
It's very understandable. Yeah, exactly. Like in Seiro, you unlock new skills entirely. Yeah, exactly. Right. Like you you get the counter and then like you get the uh like the lightning reversal. Like that's cool. Or like the fan or the umbrella or the draw mortal blade points and a time segment. I mean by the hourglass and I thought it was inferior. Let's learn it. Now let's take a look at the rapture. And these are all the these are like I mean again I don't hate this, right? I'm just like giving my feedback of like how does how like I'm looking at this as a player.
What do I think about it as a player? That's what I think about it. Does that make sense? With our corruption level increased and another experience point available, we can abilities again marked with an exclamation right. Yeah. Level required to purchase a perk is indicated in the tool tip on the right side of the screen. Let's purchase one. All right. Now what? Time passes as we acquire new perks. The night comes to an end. The sun rises. And a new day begins. Along with a new edict. Somebody getting killed. Mr. Mustache. Edicts are tied to the infamy system we mentioned earlier.
Several have already been proclaimed since the start of our journey. The higher our infamy, the harsher the edicts and the more challenging the world becomes. Okay. It's a sign that Brenes is vigilant and reacts to our actions in Bale and Gora. That's interesting. Infamy reflects how much we disrupt the operations of Brenes' followers. Let's take a closer look at one of his officers, Umbress. In the right corner of the screen, we can see his level of aggression towards us. When it reaches its peak, a new quest line is unlocked, influencing the story and shaping our confrontation with it's easy to understand.
As you can see, multiple openw world activities are tied to Umbress, all connected to his operations. Let's go back to the map to mark one of them, and then let's head there. All right, let's see this. So, you got to go over there and do this. One of the things I noticed with this game is that it had a calendar system. Now, like my opinion from like so I played Metaphor, Metaphor Refantasio, beat the whole game. I played Persona, I didn't beat the whole game. I I think that calendar systems are really good at guiding a player experience, but they can also be very oppressive in guiding a player experience.
So, I think calendar systems are good, but you have to allow players to be able to make a number of mistakes, right? Like, oh my god, oh, I wasted a day doing this. I wasted a day doing that. It it like I think a calendar system's okay whenever that's not an immediate problem. How far did you get in Persona? Not not really like super far. You can be quite restrictive unless it's more flexible. Yeah, exactly. We're seeing a calendar in Persona. I heard the Persona Royale was an improvement over the base Persona. We've arrived near one of Umbress's warehouses.
So, I didn't finish the game. I'm not sure what I missed out on yet. Killed. Go back where you came from. Uhoh. Uhoh. So they're mad. Time to restore order. So now he's not a vampire shared between human and vampire only. This enemy was weak enough to stun them with it. gotcha, [ __ ] The rakiri store blood in places like this. Umbress is responsible for keeping it safe. Oh, but we're not going to make his job any easier. Just show up and kill some people. Another group of soldiers stands in our way. This looks good. Yeah, I will say this reminds me a lot.
This is very similar to Witcher 3. Swing the weaker. I played all the way through Witcher 3 for the first time with burning blood which briefly staggers the enemy and applies a damage over time effect. I played through it in less than a year ago. Like it was whenever I was on break. Whenever my dad was in a hospital, I played through the whole game. Their blood is drained then stored in places like this where it awaits distribution to Brenes and his officers. I see. Yeah. One line one, two. Half of it. Not the other half.
Feels nice hitting him where it hurts. So, he just [ __ ] the [ __ ] up and he made the guy mad. With the supplies destroyed, our infamy rises again. We've disrupted Umbress's operations enough for now. Let's move on to another point of interest. All right, a haunted site. Earlier, we showed you how we can move faster at night. Open world games tier was at some point. Yeah, I played a lot of them. To increase our speed during the day, we can unlock a hex called Mercurial Fervor. Haunted sites are only accessible during the day as they require blood magic unavailable in vampiric form.
Deleting them strengthens our magical abilities but also puts our combat skills to the test. Shame Witcher 2 for us. Maybe. I don't know. Probably not. The spirits here. Probably not. Perhaps I could help them somehow. World feels kind of empty to be honest. Well, I I'll give my opinions on it at the end. Astral communion. Oh, that's cool. All of the enemies. So, you don't have to like coat your blade or something like in Witcher 3. opportunity to use Ravenous Flow, a perk that damages opponents in an area twice. First whenever you have to fight the race, you have to like do that [ __ ] right?
The noon rates. Yeah. Or is like the other ones too. The enemies are defeated. So, let's collect our loot. These haunted sites may reward horny man's worst nightmare. Is that right? Allowing Cohen to become an even more powerful wielder of magic. So, and that's just a brief look at open world activities. Many more awaiting an objective and opening up new story lines. Yeah. When when do it come out? is they tell me like when when is it when is it out? They're going to say it, right? 10 years. Is that right? 3rd of September. Oh, that's pretty soon.
That's actually really soon. So, um thoughts on the game? Uh this is the way I feel about it. Um world activity. I think that the combat and the character progression is uh par if not below par. I think that this game is going to have to rely heavy on uh being a good narrative story experience in order to be successful. Uh I I think so. Like um like and that that's really the careful optimism. Yeah. Like I I'm optimistic like this is a game that I'll play like I'm going to play this game for sure, but like will I finish the game and say that it's a seven or will I finish the game and say that it's a nine?
I think that's probably within Maybe it could be a five. I don't think it's going to be a five. I think it's probably going to be between a six and a nine, right? Like no meme intended. Like Witcher 3 combat wasn't very good either. I know, but Witcher 3 had really great characters and it had a good story that people were attached to and that's the reason why it was so successful. And so if they have to nail that because if Witcher 3 didn't like so and if you look at compare this right like so Crimson Desert has the opposite.
Crimson Desert has crazy cool combat. It has awesome world building and it has crazy uh you know like open world but the story is [ __ ] So do you like and each one of them has advantages and disadvantages right? But the thing is that you have to have one, right? Like you you can't go full [ __ ] You have to either be Crimson Desert or you have to be Witcher 3. Ideally you could be both but very few games are able to do that, right? Like I I would say that which game is both like uh I I I elven ring right Elvin ring is both but like otherwise I don't know and best but story is black desert slop you don't need to repeat yourself and so yes I agree with you and uh so yeah cyber punk I mean cyber punk yeah I need to play that I still do need to play that lost chapters I don't remember anything about that story honestly I don't and which in my opinion so this is going to be like maybe a hot take opinion I think that the level of quality between the Crimson Desert story and the Witcher 3 story is the same level of quality between the Witcher 3 story and the Cyberpunk story.
I think it's that much better. I do. Like Witcher 3 is a it's a nice game, but like Cyberpunk is [ __ ] wow. Like holy [ __ ] Wow. Like that was insane. Cyberpunk world and story is is S tier. Yeah, I do. And uh Yeah, that's what I just [ __ ] then [ __ ] finish it. I know. I know. I need to finish it. How was the ending? Shut up. Shut up, bro. So, Expedition 33 nailed it. Yeah. Yeah. Like I I thought the Witcher I thought the Witcher story was okay. Um it wasn't like I I didn't think it was like really amazing.
Like honestly, I thought it was like just okay. It was like I I I played the whole thing and honestly I I could see why people like the game, but I wasn't like wowed by it in the same way that I was with like maybe other are you are No, I'm telling you the truth, right? I'm the Baron. I think that I think the bloody Baron was probably the highlight of the game. That was probably the most interesting and complex part of the story. Um I'm trying to think besides that. I mean, like what else really?
Like the picking the the thing or something like that. I thought that was like it was okay, but it seemed like the choice was kind of made for you based off of the narrative. Um, let me think the the DLC's. Um, what was the guy's uh the three names? Uh, [ __ ] it. The the evil guy can't die. He made the the the pact with the the demon. Uh, what's his [ __ ] name? Gaer. No, no, that's the that's the demon. Uh the guy you talked to, Heart of Stone. Yeah. Um yeah, I forgot like what his name.
Uh Olvard. Yeah. Over von Ever. Yeah, there it is. Like I I thought like going to the the wedding and everything I thought it was okay, but like I didn't really think it was great. It was not amazing. It was just like okay, this is this is kind of cool. But um I I didn't really see like after playing it like I I I I wasn't the only part that I thought of it that was like really really good was probably inside of that Bloody Baron quest line and maybe like two or three other examples.
It's all about blood and wine. I will say that I quit soon after this, but whenever they're having that meeting and the [ __ ] the tall black vampire walks in, I was like, "Okay, this is [ __ ] cinema. This is insanely good." Like that to me, like that was the point where I was like, "Okay, all right. Now, now now we're really cooking." And uh like that was like because all the the the the point until then I was like kind of like ah it's like whatever right but like that laugh. Yes. And um so the card game is good too.
I have no interest in card. Well I do have an interest in card games now. I do. And uh so yeah and uh Witcher 3 has such janky combat. It was okay. You need to be punished. How can you not enjoy the whole game? I enjoyed the whole game. But what I'm saying is that like I would rate like I would rate the experience like a lot of people rate the experience like a nine or a 10. I would say it's much closer to a seven or an eight for me. Like I that would be where I would rate it.
I I would give like if I had to rate Witcher 3, like the base game, I'd give it an eight. And I might have played it too late, right? Like I mean cuz theoretically like if I had played it when it released, I might have given it a higher score. But I played it for the first time at the end of 2025. So like maybe that's the reason why. And like I'm also like my value system is very much centered around combat. Like that's what I care about the most. It's all because of the bugs.
I I didn't have that. And uh so yeah, combat pissed me off. I It didn't piss me off. I just thought that it wasn't it wasn't amazing. Right. That's all really there was to it. And but maybe you know what? Now that we're talking about it a lot, maybe I should actually finish it. Maybe I should. And uh you ever play Red Dead Redemption 2? I will at some point. I will. I played Witcher before Dark Souls. Yeah. I think if I played Dark Souls before Witcher um uh like I I probably if I play Witcher before Dark Souls, I probably would have had a better opinion about it.
From Software spoiled me. Yeah. And uh in 2015, there was no Elven Ring, no Seiro, no Wukong. Yeah, exactly. Like I just feel like there are so many really great combat games now that like I really like playing
