Claude is down with API error 500, a server side issue, and the creator notes it on screen.

Claude is down again, so Income stream surfers walks through free and paid alternatives like Codex, OpenCode/Open Router, and other models to stay productive today.

Summary

Claude DOWN AGAIN? Try THIS Instead (COMPLETELY FREE) by Income stream surfers dives into the recent outage and outlines solid fallback options. The creator reports Claude’s error 500 and references claude.us status.claude.com to verify the outage. He ranks Codex as the top alternative, with a note to use the GPT-5.5-tied Codex app on low for speed, and to switch to extra-high for critical coding tasks. Other strong contenders include Mimo V2.5 by Xiaomi inside OpenCode, Qwen 3.6 27B, DeepSeek, and Gemini 3 Flash via Antigravity, plus an Open Router setup for free usage. He also tests practical uses like generating thumbnails with Codex and comparing results to Claude’s output. The video is candid about pricing, free trials, and the reality that outages happen, so having a short list of trusted tools keeps you productive. Finally, he invites viewers to book a call for website work if they need a hand building Next.js or Shopify sites. It’s a pragmatic, actionable guide for anyone who codes during an outage.

Key Takeaways

  • Claude outages can be temporary but disruptive; check claude.us status.claude.com to confirm.
  • Codex is recommended as the number one alternative, with a Codex app using GPT-5.5 and a suggested low usage setting for day-to-day tasks.
  • Open source and cheaper options exist: Open Code with Mimo V2.5 by Xiaomi and alternatives like Qwen 3.6 27B offer viable paths.
  • Open Router plus Mimo, or Antigravity with Gemini 3 Flash, provide free or low-cost access options when Claude is unavailable.
  • Open Code/Code-like tools can still generate useful results, including thumbnails, but quality may vary versus Claude.
  • Open-source desktop trends: Open Code now has a desktop app, expanding offline workflow possibilities.
  • Prices and promos matter: ChatGPT/ Codex trials and the $20 Codex plan are highlighted as affordable ways to maintain productivity during outages.

Who Is This For?

This is essential viewing for developers who rely on Claude for coding tasks and need a reliable outage playbook, plus budget-conscious makers who want to explore free or cheaper AI model substitutes.

Hey guys, welcome to this video. Going to be a quick one today, but basically Claude is down again, as you can see right here. It looks like it's just not working at all, at least for me. Anyway, I'm getting this error that you can see right here. Yes, I'm playing RuneScape at the same time. But uh API error 500 internal error. This is a server side issue, usually temporary. Try again in a moment. If it persists, check claude.us status.claude.com. So, I went here and I had a little look and apparently it was also down on the 15th. Error elevated error rates on requests to some models. So, basically guys, I would say as an alternative, you have the Codex uh app. So, yeah, basically guys, I thought I would talk basically about the alternatives that we have in today's video. So, I'm going to do something a little bit meta here. I'm actually going to use um Codex to create a thumbnail for this video. So, Claude is down right now. Can you use my thumbnail thumbnail skill to make a thumbnail about the fact that Claude is down. Uh worldwide outage. Okay, so yeah, let's talk about the other alternatives that you have, right? If you don't want to use Codex, I would say Codex is your number one. Right, so this is 5.5. I use I would recommend using this on low just because it does take a hell of a long time if you're not on low, right? So, we have we cannot use Opus 4.7 right now. Okay, so Kimmy 2.6, definitely a good alternative um inside Kimmy code. Again, I'm not talking about like is this as good as Opus 4.7? No, it's not. But, if you're going to be using uh a model today and you actually want to get something done, Kimmy code, definitely a good alternative. These models here, Deep Seek, Quen 3.6, Mimo inside Open code would also be a very very good way to do this. Open code is free open source to use. All you have to do is pay for the gas the the AI models basically, right? The benzina, the petrol. I forgot the word in my head then, so I only knew the Italian word. Looks like they actually have a desktop app now, which is really really nice. I haven't used this yet, but I will definitely give this a test. Let's actually just download this um download this now. So, I'm on Apple silicon, I think. So, there we go. That's going to start downloading. So, we'll give that a little test at some point. But, I would say the number one alternative as of today is um is uh Codex, right? So, I will put Codex here cuz it does deserve to be here. Codex app with GPT 5.5. I would use it on low unless you're doing really really important coding, in which case use it on extra high. I'm using the $20 plan, and I get pretty good usage out of it. So, just for reference, guys, if you haven't been following along with the videos I've done recently, this is like a leader uh like a table of all of the models and systems I've tested recently. Which is why I'm making this video so that I'm probably one of the best people to tell you what you can use as an alternative. Number one alternative is Codex, right? If you don't want to use Codex, you want to use something that maybe doesn't cost $19 a month, but, you know, costs maybe $5 to have a little play around with, I would say Mimo V2.5 by Xiaomi Xiaomi inside open code is probably one of your best options. Um to be honest with you, DeepSeek is a little bit expensive. Qwen 3.6 27B is another strong candidate here. But, yeah, so a lot of people when this happens, they're like, "Well, what the hell do I do now? Cloud code is down. I literally can't do anything." I know it's Saturday. A lot of people are still working today, guys. So, this is what I'd recommend you do. Codex if you have a ChatGPT subscription, the $20 plan is actually enough. I think they I think they are giving away free trials as well. So, go and get a free trial if you haven't already, which means that as of today you can use this completely for free, right? Um uh let me actually just check that. I'm pretty sure I saw the uh Chat GPT trial. Yeah, so um I think you can get one of these. Um so double your normal Codex usage on the 103 month tier until 31st of May 2026. Yeah, but that doesn't say anything about free. I think there is something to do with getting maybe business for free for a month or something. But yeah, that would be my number one alternative. That's what I'm going to be using while Claude is down. Um it's been pretty stressful, honestly. Just to kind of know what to use when uh Claude is down. I'm someone that I still want to code today, right? I don't want to just sit around doing nothing. So yeah, I'll be using Codex, but again, if you don't want to get a um subscription, you can use Open Router with I would say Mimo is probably your best model right now. Another alternative that people don't really talk about anymore, but is still pretty decent, I would say, is Antigravity. I haven't used this in ages, just to clarify. Um but it you can get pretty good free usage out of something like Gemini 3 Flash, which I personally do think is a pretty good model as well. The fact that there's no update available on Antigravity, it's literally been 4 months since I've opened this app, so it's crazy that there's no update here. Absolutely crazy. They always do this, Google. They release something, people use it, it's not perfect, and then they just stop updating it, and they just move on to the next thing. They've got shiny object syndrome over there at Google, for sure. Okay, guys, so it does look like Claude is back up. What that normally means is there's been some kind of nerf in place. So I'd be extremely careful using Opus 4.7 today, guys. I just wouldn't even use it. It's most likely unusable. Um I would just skip straight to Codex, honestly. Although Codex is is is also having problems. I don't know what is going on here, but these thumbnails are not good at all. When I do this with Opus, there's never any problem. I might try and change this to um, to extra high real quick and then say continue. Think bro. Okay guys, so now apparently Codex is down. Um, I don't know what's going on. They're going to They're kind [clears throat] of fighting so hard that they're forgetting that they have to actually back up their words and stuff. That's crazy. I just got disconnected five times uh, in Codex. Okay guys, so let's see. Well, you guys can judge yourselves. This is the thumbnail that Codex 5.5 came up with. It's decent. Uh, it's not really following the skill. Not a big fan of it. And then this is what Claude Code came up with, which I much prefer. It's probably the one I'm going to use. So you can kind of see the difference in how they think about these things. This is using a slightly different school uh, skill, just so that you know. But you can just see that I don't know, Claude just seems so much better. I don't know. I I still massively prefer Claude, even though it is currently down. But yeah, that's going to be it for this video guys. I just wanted to give you guys alternatives so that you're not stuck for the day. If you do want to work with me guys, if you need a website building, Next.js, Shopify, whatever it might be, come and talk to me today. Book a call with the link in the description. I'll be happy to talk to you. I'm not really working with the team anymore um, just because I can do everything myself with Claude Code now, so I don't really need a team. So if you do want to work with me, specifically with me, grow your Shopify website, make a Next.js website, whatever it is, book a call today and let's work together. With all that being said guys, there's a link in the description and in the pinned comment to my website. Thank you so much for watching. If you are watching all the way to the end of the video, you're a true legend and I'll see you very very soon with some more content. Peace out.
