Debate over 70mm restorations versus 4K upscaling, film grain, and preserving original cinema versus digital enhancements.
Maximilian Dood and the crew geek out on Darkstalkers, nerd out over retro hardware, and riff on Resident Evil and LOTR while swapping stories from Evo Japan and retro arcade culture.
Summary
Maximilian Dood hosts a marathon Darkstalkers Sunday with YoVideogames, rallying viewers around the retro fighting game culture that shaped the genre. The crew hops between classic arcade play on Darkstalkers 1–3, with commentary on CPS hardware, Saturn ports, and the stubborn nostalgia of arcade preservation. They discuss the Darkstalkers community, top players, and the surprising depth of the roster, including Felicia, Demitri, and Lilith, along with how the series’ charm leans into Looney Tunes energy more than grim seriousness. Across the stream, they pivot to broader pop culture milestones: Evo Japan’s Darkstalkers top eight, a trial-by-fire of the old guard vs. new hardware, and a candid take on modern ports versus original arcade ROMs. The chat erupts with megahit nostalgia, comparing these games to MK and Street Fighter, while also debating the merits of Saturn vs. PS2 ports and the fidelity of the Capcom Fighting Collection. Interspersed are digressions about Resident Evil trailers, the future of video game cinema, and even Lord of the Rings lore, all filtered through Maximilian’s irreverent but insightful lens. The energy stays high as they celebrate tiny details—soundtracks, stage art, and the tactile joy of pulling off a demon input in Vampire Savior—while acknowledging that Darkstalkers’ legacy lives on in fan preservation, archival releases, and the enduring love of die-hard retro players. By the end, the crew lands on a hopeful note: celebrate the quirks, preserve the history, and keep the culture alive as arcade communities and new generations discover Darkstalkers all over again.
Key Takeaways
- Darkstalkers on Saturn runs notably well with arcade-accurate speed and responsive inputs, highlighting why the port remains beloved by fans.
- Darkstalkers 3 (and its arcade roots) remains the yardstick for the series’ depth, with players debating why some versions are preferable for competitive play.
- Evo Japan's Vampire Savior top eight showcased a high-skill, high-tempo environment where even veteran players were visibly challenged by the format and speed.
- Port fidelity versus arcade ROMs is a live debate among fans; the group argues that arcade versions often feel more precise and satisfying than some modern collections.
- Resident Evil trailers and the broader IP landscape are a hot topic; Maximilian and crew argue for creative reinvention that respects the source while staying fresh.
- Retro hardware conversations (CPS, Saturn, PS1/PS2) reveal how hardware constraints shaped game design and community culture in the ’90s.
- Beyond games, the stream touches on pop culture touchstones (LOTR, Star Wars, Terminator 2) to illustrate how fan discourse about classics never truly ends.

Transcending history and the world. A tale of dudes and souls eternally retold. Heat. We don't need the sh to see how far we come on our journey to go. Searching for our star deep in the night. In my heart for that special life to show me with love to shower me with power to I got to get the edge of car to carry on Even look at my top. Hey, hold on a second. Mortal Kombat juice. Is that a dragon or a tentacle? Oh, I see. It's a drench. Drenicle. Where? Where? Where's that cup from?
Regal. Reg. Um, you know what? I was looking up. I was trying to find some tickets for it. Uh, is that lighting up? Yes. Yes, it totally is. Um, dude, Terminator 2 is coming to theaters. Yeah. Oh, you didn't you don't know, do you? Oh, no. There's 70 mm 70 mm. There is, but yeah, it's 4K digital. Oh, I'm not doing the 4K one. It's There's like four different versions they're doing. I ain't doing the 4K one, dude. It's 4K digital and they digital restoration. You're not that far off. It's not generative AI, though. It's like it's like one of those AI upscalers film grain.
Like it it made it made True Lies and Aliens and Terminator 2 look like [ __ ] Oh, dude. Absolutely crazy. You know, and that's like so like with that 4K up. I'm like, "No, dude. The movie stands the test of [ __ ] time. still looks you can release the original thing. No need to 4K upscale it and just [ __ ] let it rock. Everything's smooth and smudgy and then also mega sharp. Like it adds sharpness to all the pixels and it's like you look at characters faces like what the [ __ ] am I looking at this to his nipples.
Um so anyway, why T2 what like 35th anniversary or something I think and I'm kind of like yeah but what about the 40th anniversary cuz there's no way to properly re-release it. Aliens. Oh, is that not happening soon? I don't know. It's It is It is 2026 that came out 1986. It's the 40th anniversary of Aliens. You guys got to see that 70 mm version one time. But I didn't cuz I was out visiting family. We saw it at the Ark Light. That's the one where I saw uh Jim Cameron and Bill Paxton in the back.
I just didn't say anything. And that's where he decided he had to upscale and and digitally erase all the film. That was the moment. That was the moment. That was the moment where he's like, I have to I have to fix this. Where's Heath? Yeah. Shout out to I You know what? It's funny. This will all reminds me of one the whole Star Wars thing. And then kind of how wrong uh South Park actually got it because I worked at FYE when ET was getting a big anniversary release and we had to manually go in and put stickers on there every DVD because initially only the CG like you know edited you know fixed up new effects version was going to be sold and if you wanted the 80s version you had to buy this giant box set.
Spielberg found out about that and he personally went to Universal and said, "No, every DVD needs to include the OG80s cut. Every single one." So, what happened was is the the B remember bonus discs? Anyone remember bonus discs? All the bon the bonus disc had to be taken out of every normal DVD of of this ET colle whatever and had to put the 82 or 84 whatever year came out version on there and we had to put these big stickers on the back of box saying that like there is no bonus disc. These bonus features do not exist.
It is new version, old version. Isn't that [ __ ] crazy to think about now that like they used to because they wanted to resell you a movie like one that you've already seen before in slightly better resolution. They they legit thought, "All right, ain't no reason people want to watch this again but a little bit better and have that be it. We better we better spend all this money making this movie presentation the most glitzed and glammed and contentfilled [ __ ] ever. Like I like dude I remember when Transformers got their like 20th anniversary version like like [ __ ] uh DVD and there was just so much extras.
The Alien Quadrilogy, the Alien Anthology. Yeah, anthology. So much [ __ ] Just so many interviews and behind the scenes things. was 6 to 10 hours worth of extra [ __ ] or six. Shut up, Kenny. Eight. Uh, it was like 8 hours. They just don't do that anymore for anything. Gotcha. They don't do it for anything. And it all that's done is like put on YouTube now for like and it's small. Yeah. And then chunk it up into shorts. Yeah. They used to have to try to get you to buy things. Yeah. Remember Lord of the Rings? They would have like those massive book size [ __ ] dude.
extended editions. It comes with like six discs per movie. It was great. Yeah. Speaking of Lord of the Rings, what do you think of the new one coming out? Oh, it's coming. And Steven Colbear. There's a new one coming out. Steven is being co-written by Steven. No. Okay. So, can you might be mixing up stories a bit here. There is a new movie coming out called The Hunt for Golem. I have no idea why it's being made. Yeah. Is that not So, okay. So, the No. Anyways, Hunt for Golem takes place the moment where where Gandalf goes, keep it secret, keep it safe, right?
Then he walks out the door, right? Okay. And then he then he's riding his horse off. He meets Sarman. He's in those catacombs at Gondor drinking his thing, reading all the old Yeah. So it's the passage of time as he's learning about the ring. Correct. They're making a whole movie about that because in the book the movie doesn't say this. In the book that is 17 years. Whoa. Yeah. The the moment of him so like you know I don't have any answers. You know I must seek a couple. It's a it's like a maybe a week in the movie.
The movie like Yeah. I mean it's a couple days, a week, a month. No, it's 17 years. Wow, bro. They skipped 17 years that fast. I'll be right back. So, they're making this movie about Aragorn and and and Gandalf looking for Golem. Wait, the whole thing where he tells him, I don't know how, you know, you know, I don't know how long they tortured him. The enemy found him first. I thought it was in the movie. So, I I have a question immediately. Who's playing Aragorn? They got this new guy. It's over. VO Vgo had no interest in it.
And because he Why it's it's that would be like Michael J. Fox like coming on for Back to the Future again, they'd be everyone would be like, "No, don't." Like, yeah. So, I the deep respect for VGO Martinson, who's also like a really cool dude in real life. Like, yeah, I would not want to touch that [ __ ] with a 10ft pole, right? And he's older than Ian Mcllin was when he made Lord of the Rings, you know? So, he's just like, "No, there's no win here. There's no way. THERE'S NO WAY THIS IS GOING to be good.
There's not a win. There's no [ __ ] There's not a win to be had." So yeah, I have no and Andy Circus is directing it and I don't know and I I don't have a lot of faith in it at all. I just know. Um that's probably like the only part of it that's appealing. Yeah. Like someone who was there and he's Yeah, you better not be admit you're old. I said it. Here's here's my Okay, I'm a Lord of the Rings fan. I'm a big Lord of the Rings fan. But when people like Oh, as Kenny just asked, am I excited?
I'm like, no. This is a story that didn't need to be told like at all. Like Gandalf surmising it to Frodo, like I searched everywhere for the creature golem, but the enemy found him first. I don't know how long they tortured him. They discerned two words, you know, shy. I'm like, okay, that's it. That's all you needed to [ __ ] know. Like there is nothing else to say about that story because again, you're going to make a movie and you already know the outcome of it. That [ __ ] feels so desperate. Extremely feels like even more desperate than like the Amazon show.
The Amazon show started off like kind of okay where it's like this is kind of okay and I just it dropped off the face of the earth for me. I don't know if you watched that much of it. I watched like two or three episodes. That's exactly what I did. I was just kind of like this tonally is just not it. This is just not it. You know, I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt. This is not it, dude. Yeah. So, Steven Cobear is writing a a movie which is going to be a sequel to Lord of the Rings.
Oh, that's right. And it's basically so remember when I told you about there's this whole like missing part of the book where okay remember when they're getting chased at night by the by the guys on horseback and they get on that little like little raft and and he's just like how far they entire like journey journey. There's a whole journey from there before they get to the town of Brie, right? So Stephen Co wants to do a sequel with Mary and Pippen and their kids and they're going to go on a journey and they're going to take that that experience of the Barrow Downs and Old Man Willow and Tom Bombadil and put that into a movie as a sort of follow-up adventure with like a the you know the combat kids if you will of Lord of the Rings new like you know the new Jin.
Wow. So that to me is like is that a good idea? Probably not. But the because the problem is is that like it and it's also like kind of one of the bigger issues of the Hobbit well as just as a story it lacks the urgency that like Lord of the Rings has as a narrative right which is about the ring which is about Sauron executing his plan like like all that [ __ ] is like if we don't do this we're losing everything right and if they sort of shoefist anything in like it feels it feels like like they're trying feels like trying just to push more [ __ ] in that doesn't need to be there.
I don't really necessarily know that a sequel with the Barrowdowns and Old Man Willow and and Tom Bombadil. Part of me is kind of like that's nice that you really wanted to get that part of the book in, but I would have more respect if Steven Colbear was somehow trying to do the scouring of the Shire, which was more of a of a cautionary tale of kind of like letting authoritarianism take over, you know, your peaceful idllic, you know, country. There's actually like an Andorish story there, right? You know, cuz that's exactly what Scouring of the Shire would be would be a extremely Andorish take on Hobbiton, which I'd be like, you know, yes, Sarmon died in the movies, like, you know, whatever.
You could find a way. It doesn't even have to be Sarman. It could be someone else. Yeah. You know, the whole point of it could just be it could be one of like, okay, for all you nerds out there who know, could be one of the [ __ ] it could be one or both of the two blue wizards who disappeared who came in and they take the place of Sarmon and Worm Tongue and they slowly, you know, corrupt the Shire and turn into an authoritarian nightmare. And then it's about Mary and Pippen leading a resurgence, you know, to take it back.
That could be a decent sequel followup, I feel. But Barrow Downs and Tom Bombadil is kind of like just Tom Bombadil is not Tom Bombadil is not I'm just gonna say it a movie character. No, he's he is a like a children's story book character where it's better if it's better what you think of what this guy is in your head than being shown what he is. Yeah. Because being shown what he is is like is that birch [ __ ] all over him and stuff? Oh, that's ratagast and hot. the brown the brown wizard. But yes, but Tom Bombadil is the same deal.
He's a hippie. He lives in the forest and he has he has godlike powers. He can wear the ring and nothing happens to him. Why the [ __ ] didn't he do it? Like I understand completely why this character Tom Bombadil wasn't put in the movies. He's a weird hippie who lives in the forest and has literally the powers of the universe and JUST TELLS HIM HAVE FUN ON YOUR TRIP. I'M LIKE NO [ __ ] YOU DIDN'T put him in the movies. You think Yeah. You think the meme of the Eagles was bad? This guy would have been 20 times worse.
He's a regular guy from Venice Beach. Then you know what would have been way better than uh than watching a sequel to Lord of the Rings or a weird spin-off of a little moment, you know, in Lord of the Rings. Just watching Lord of the Rings. Just just [ __ ] just watch. The movie wasn't good, but like War for the War Roharim was okay. Cool. The animated one. Yeah. I'm like, okay, it wasn't great, but it was a nice time because it was like, how did how did Rohan get to the point that it is like in the movie we see in the movie and it's way in the past has no real connection.
You know what they should do? All right, it's not bad. They need they they have the Star Wars problem where their their efforts of them being directly connected to characters around Mordor and the Shire and Middle Earth, right, is like a Star Wars issue where we can't get away from the [ __ ] Jedi and stuff like that, right? So the what they need to do is something like I didn't play all of it but the Shadow of Mordor game. Which is about a completely different guy with a unique ability going on his unique adventure, right? Which was like Yeah.
That seemed to be pretty good and it landed pretty good with like loader fans and [ __ ] like that until you got to the second game and it went I didn't know the second one. Rails either my birthday or Christmas with the with the PS the Shadow Mordor 2 I think. Yeah. nor you give me Shadow Mordor. So yeah, that goes off the rails cuz then they're like, "Oh, there's this Elvish ghost who's like make make the anti at one ring. The one ring to kill the one ring." And the best part, remember the spider in in in Return of the King.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They they they somehow decided it could turn into a sexy woman. [ __ ] a dude in the second game for [ __ ] a reasons. Angelina Jolie and Beolf. [ __ ] a brother. And like she talks like it's like [ __ ] a brother. Exactly. I'm like I remember seeing that like this is the dumbest [ __ ] thing. What what are we doing here? Sexy Sheila. It's a [ __ ] spider. It's it's ungolon. Whatever. It's it's from like the dawn of time. They're like I guess technically like well it's an Shut up. Shut up. There is no way Tolken would have ever sat and thought, you know what, if she was a hot babe that could she could turn to a hot babe, but she chooses to be a giant spider most.
And then they come across the Sheilob in her current appearance dawning massive breasts. Massive. Massive breasts in his dialect. I like Oh my god. Yeah. Oh no. Just just awful. Um, anyway, Resident Evil, we had We should watch the trailer. I can't I can't turn Well, maybe I could, but I have to like edit it out of the YouTube VOD after. We should watch it so Simmons can watch it, chat. Right. We should We should just turn it on so Simmons can watch it. I don't think the stream will get taken down, but I I do get a copyright thing, but I just edit it out of the VOD.
Uh, Simmons hasn't seen it yet. Watch the trailer. We should We should show it to him. Shout out to Heath. He Heath. He won the tournament. He got a badass levelist. Who went with uh he went with Smoke, your old man? Smoke. And you know what? Heath is a uh Marvel player. He just started practicing. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know Heath. Yeah, So, Heath. And then Crimson Ke. Shout out to everyone that showed up and he gets to watch the movie tomorrow. You want a Leverless? Keith. Yep. So, Crimson, Kionics, all the homies that show up.
I'll say this is the only Resident Evil movie I've ever wanted to see. That's all I got to say. Okay, hold up, hold up, hold up. We'll watch this chat. We'll watch it with you. Um, you know what? I'll just keep us on the big screen. So, just just contact Heath if you want spoilers for the MK movie. He's gonna watch it tomorrow. Bigum screen. Uh, guys, you should Okay, hold up. Hold up. Hold up. He's got a hot day tomorrow. Hope you have a good day tomorrow, Lif. Here we go. Hello. Had a little bit of a problem on the road.
I was wondering if I could use your phone. Wow, my bad. Sorry. Weapons. Yeah, weapons is good. On the small screen, chat for a reason. For a reason. Hey babe. Um, look. Um, I'm I'm I'm really sorry that we got disconnected earlier, but um some things have uh happened. This give me peace. Oh yeah, I'm in like a seriously [ __ ] up situation right now. And it looks like there's a chance that we might not get to talk to each other again. I just wanted you to know. I love you. It's Resident Evil as [ __ ] Like it it's it feels like RE7.
Yeah. you know, like they they don't need Chris or Claire. Like it just feels like, hey, what what is Resident Evil? What the [ __ ] even is it? And Resident Evil isn't necessarily all the [ __ ] that's beyond RE4. Like that stuff belongs in games. Like you're not going to be able to tell make an RE4 movie like very compelling. Like that'd be really hard. But you can do a unique story, you know, and make it around the same whole aspect of progression that Resident Evil does. like and it's obvious that like there's different biomes, there's different areas the character progresses and moves towards just like Resident Evil, you know, it escalates.
It does have a sort of Resident Evil like oh it's designed it's designed around a game that doesn't exist. Kind of kind of feel to to what they're doing. Um I I think I what is it like people are a little upset because it's not based on any particular game or whatever which I'm kind of like outbreak. Yeah, it's fine. I'm kind of like good to be completely honest because every single time you get like a video game movie or almost every time you're holding it in direct comparison, right? Cuz then it just becomes this like really either a you're constantly you're waiting for something to happen.
You're constantly comparing it. You're constantly like I'm going to watch it. You're you're constantly like putting it by saying or it feels patronizing, you know? It's like, you know, like dangling keys in your face like remember this, remember that? You know, and I'll give like, for example, the Mario movie credit, like the first one, I I kind of loved it that it was like grounded as in like Mario's a dude from Brooklyn, right? And I'm like, yeah, this is kind of here in the old live action movie, but that's not present [ __ ] at all in the games, dude.
Like, it's a unique take on like what Mario is done in a pretty like tasteful way. They're plumbers, but they're not like mystical plumbers. Like, they they go and they learn about this [ __ ] So, it's like I kind of enjoy this. I'm enjoying the progression, you know? Yeah. And then the second movie just drops literally drops all of it. It just only back to mystical [ __ ] Yeah. No, that's fair, too. Yeah. The first one had way way more heart and like, you know. Yeah. Yeah. It had like a good like like a good launching point, you know, a good grounded launching point.
Like uh I mean it's such a short trailer. So there's really I mean again I will agree in the sense where I'm like it could not have it could not be called Resident Evil and it wouldn't really change anything about the visuals or anything of that cuz like nothing about it screams there's no liquor, right? Like we don't see any creatures. We don't even really see it. However, like you start to look at like the bones of like I I really like the introspection. What even is Resident Evil? Is it literally just Chris and Jill and Leon and Claire and Ada?
Is that it? Like seven. Like seven until the very end, which is completely unnecessary. It it re it seven is like there's a reason why seven hits so hard because everyone was like Aerys's reaction. I can't believe this is Resident Evil. I can't believe it. Like this is Res This is great. Everyone's reaction is that this this isn't Resident Evil. That's what's great about And you know what it is? It's it's kind of like Star Wars playing with the uh action like you know the movies. here's our action like you know it's the andor analogy the andor analogy right and it's just like here's all these action figures and then everyone who makes a movies oh we just get these same action figures and all this stuff and all that stuff and dude like I was watching even the Darth Maul show and guess what oh you like hallway scenes where you know the Jedi does crazy [ __ ] in the hallway scenes here we go again here's it again and I'm like oh my [ __ ] god well people like how many times the hallway scene people people say they want certain things, but what people actually want is to be surprised.
People want to be given something that they had no idea they wanted. And once once that happens, you're like, "Whoa, this is so cool. This is so different. Like I'm having such a great [ __ ] time." Like Yeah. Because you nothing is like it isn't square shaped into square hole [ __ ] which just goes into the spot every single time. Like you're you're actually being get fed something new. And I wouldn't I personally I wouldn't really want to see a Resident Evil movie that's trying to hard adapt a game because I think the last one did that.
Was it Welcome to Raccoon City or whatever. Nobody was supposed to be that. Yeah. Yeah. Cuz it was supposed to be one and two put together, And and how'd it go? Not well from what I understand. I didn't even watch it. Yeah. From what I understand, nobody really liked it. Um, and then there's like, you know, this the seven the the the seven, you know, Paul Anderson, you know, my wife's hot and awesome, like, you know, love my films, you know, whatever. Those Resident Evil movies are just Fast and Furious movies with zombies, man. Pretty much.
It's just look and I'm like I this trailer I saw, I'm like, "Wow, I Okay, cool." Cuz I'm just I just tired of it. And then it's just like Milo Joic just gets so overpowered and I'm just like the interesting the interesting issue with adapting video game characters that have been around for 30 years. What people think of those characters is going to vastly change because those characters have changed a lot when they're in so many games for such a long dude. Like Jill has been probably five different [ __ ] people. Just going to throw it out there.
Chris has also been like three different people. Leon has been mostly consistent until Resident Evil 6, but like then you're going to adapt that. So, which version are you adapting? Like, is it going to be RE3 RE3 Jill? Is it going to be RE3 remake Jill? That's very different. I'm going to be honest. I think um this is a problem, especially with gaming in general, frankly, and adaptations. Yeah. Uh is we can't just let [ __ ] go. Oh, yeah. Like um I think Resident Evil's kind of starting to kind of come to this problem a little bit right now where it's like we're going to bring Leon back and then you have that question of like how is Leon in RE9.
Because you had six which really kind of nobody really liked but it's like you had a sort of natural progression from like the dork to the to the confident cocky you know smartass and four and there was like you know there was like a you know this to that you know uh because he's very he's very good at his job by four you know from two to four. So there's that and then there's six and he's just he's just mad mad boring. And then so nine okay nine is sort of like trying to like kind of bring it back a little bit, you know, ease it around.
But it's also again like you said, it's been 30 years now. 35 years. Like we've been we've been living with we've been living with these characters for like 30 years. And part of me feels I feel like we don't need to have I don't think Resident Evil as a game series needs to constantly have Leon, Claire, Chris. Yeah. you know. Uh well that's why R7 sold so [ __ ] good. It sold in like I think it is the bestselling Resident Evil second I think R2 remake. Is it R2 remake? Yeah, I think R2 remake finally like they they literally dropped all of the characters cuz Chris really doesn't count.
Like he's there for a frame or two at the end of the game. They dropped every single Resident Evil character and all mentions of the Resident Evil history that came before it for the most part. And they donated a completely original story with completely original literal faceless main character. Anything that tried to connect it to the past games was felt really shoehorned in dumb. Yeah. Like it was the worst part about any narratively speaking anything old Umbrella or Chris was like the worst aspect. It was the worst aspect of the new game. Like narratively anyway.
So what happened with that? It it did incredibly well. Like people [ __ ] loved it because Resident Evil finally was something different, you know? And that's why it's like the criticism that I see of like it could be bad. Don't get me wrong, RE7 could have been bad. And then you would have been like, "Yeah, it it wasn't Resident Evil enough, you know, like you would had that criticism." But when something is that good and it tries to execute a new idea like this movie feels like it's doing it feels like it's not thematically Resident Evil, but spiritually Resident Evil.
And that's like that's exactly what [ __ ] Andor was. Andor was literally that where it's like this is so not Star Wars. It's great. Like it's great. Like this is so not way I would ever think Star Wars would be. Yeah. No, it was it just like I said, it made every other things like it looked it made it look like childish. Makes it look childish. Childish and not like in a bad way, but it's just like Andor is like, "Holy [ __ ] this is serious." Like actual actual stakes and stuff like that. But also like you were saying with the Resident Evil like someone's like I saw it didn't really feel Resident Evil to me.
If you watch the trailer like really closely, you really see like you know he starts with a shotgun. Oh, I found a shotgun. No bullets. He starts looking around and then Yeah, it's it's it's a character going into an unknown place. Not a lot is happening. There's a lot of like, what is going on? I'm stuck. I need to get out of here. Which is the character is looting looking for things to to move forward. The character literally finds a body with a key on it, like grabs the key and then something attacks him. I'm like, this is Resident Evil.
And then if you see in the other trailer, he had a different gun. So like he gets different weapons and it progresses like you get the the pistol and then the shotgun and machine gun, you know, like and then we're going to bring it back to seven. That's why seven was so cool. I'm like, hey, this is Resident Evil, but like different like and it's it is kind of like I love the Star Wars universe, but let's move on from the Skywalker series. We should we should watch this 12minute breakdown. I didn't watch this. And what's cool is too it's just like this is for sure.
Can we like, you know, make a Resident Evil that doesn't not I that's what it's like but doesn't just suck the teeth of the old days. Yeah, dude. Evil. It's a new survival. And I'm like, let's just Yeah, of you know. And that's what I did really like. People don't know what they want until they until they see it. You have to give people something like unexpected, but it fits in a way that like, oh wow, this feels great. Other than that, we're going back to umbrella. I'm like, dude, it would be sick. Transformers one is the best example of this.
I waited the whole [ __ ] movie for them to eventually pander to Transformers 86, and they never did it. And I was like, [ __ ] bravo cuz EVERYTHING THEY DID WAS AMAZING. LIKE, what they did in their own movie was amazing. Anyway, yeah, hold on. Let me press Let me press this uh this button. Bar none my most visually Gonzo movie. Yeah, this part too. All right, I'm Zach Kger. This is the teaser for uh Resident Evil uh which is coming out September 18th. Um okay. So basically my rule for for this movie try and try and make a movie that felt like my experience of playing live in the world of Resident Evil.
So this, you know, I feel like this movie takes place alongside the events of Resident Evil 2. Um I like to think that, you know, everything that's going on in the in the police station could be happening in this world. this is just another dude on another mission on the other side of town and like what's going on with him. Um, so so yeah, I mean it's not canon in that I'm not using the characters, but it's canon in that it it it lives in the actual, you know, uh, day of of Reckoning Raccoon City.
Um, so he, you know, this movie follows a character he's he's outside of Raccoon City and he's got to get into the center of it and uh, and we're kind of with him as he goes through this gauntlet of of set pieces. as it gets deeper and deeper into town. I could be a liquor. And so, um, you know what I love about the games that every piece brings with it unique new and so I just wanted to I wanted the rhythm to feel like it was always changing. It was always shifting. You were always facing a new creature bigger uh dangers and and uh and you had to be aware of, you know, resource management and health and and things like that.
So, I really did use a lot of uh of of cues from the games on how to how to build this thing out. And so, definitely an Evil Dead vibe. Yeah, it's a love letter to the games. Uh, which I fully fully obsessively love. All right, so one of the things that I love about Resident Evil is the graduation from from gun to gun to gun. So, you can see in the first shot here, he's got a pistol. Um, that's the first weapon that he acquires. uh as he progresses, he'll graduate to the shotgun and then ultimately he'll get a uh an MP5.
That's one of the fun things about playing these games is whenever you get the new weapon, you're like, "Oh, and thank God. Thank God." And so his character kind of has that reaction as he does it. A lot of this movie is like third person, you know? So there's a steady cam following Austin, our actor. And uh and it was really a dance between him and our camera operator. So, you know, when I had a really wide lens and we're kind of over his shoulder and so when he looks left, we like look around and look left.
When he looks right, we swing around and look right. So, I really tried to incorporate just the visual language of the games into the movie. There's also, you know, a fair amount of firsterson uh shooter stuff in in this in this movie that is, you know, the game's utilized sometimes. And but really just like you're behind the the character and you're when they look right, you look right. When they look up, you look up. and just just letting that be the the most common visual language of the game of the movie I should say um is very much from the games.
This is for sure bar none my most visually um gonzo movie by far. The great thing about how I like to play Resident Evil, especially the first time I play one of the games, I like to go really slow through the world and just kind of drink it in and try and immerse myself. uh you know I I'm pretending I'm there like we all probably do when we play games. So So you know Austin is our main character Brian I should say. He's moving slowly through this world. So you know if you've seen any of my other movies you know I like to kind of like creep through these dreadful spaces and and Resident Evil is like the perfect playground for for a guy like me who likes to just you know really take his time.
Sounds like he gets it. Absolutely. There's an understanding of what is that Jack in the Box moment and uh so so you know that's kind of what Austin's doing here is he finds this abandoned farmhouse. I was a massive fan of Austin after working on weapons and I'm a bigger fan of him. I need to watch weapons and barbarian. He's just so he's so fascinating. He's the perfect avatar for for the viewer. And what I wanted was I wanted to do a Resident Evil movie where you're not following a badass with military training. You're following your average gamer like me.
Like if I was thrust into a Resident Evil game, I would be terrified and I would be missing% of the shots I took. I would have to learn the guns as I go because I've I've played with an MP5, you know, for however many thousands of hours playing video games. But if I have one in my hand, I'm like, where's the safety? How does this work? And so I think it's just kind of fun to be to be following somebody with with no no combat experience whatsoever as they're, you know, walking through hell with a machine gun.
What he's carrying is important and um and he doesn't know the whole picture when he accepts the job of what he's been tasked with. And Austin is just kind of like a perfect very lovable but by no means badass guy. And um and his reactions to the to the horrors is just it's I love it. I love it. I just really love the idea of like you're moving through a sewer, you have no idea what's in front of you and you come around a corner and you see a gigantic obese naked hairless man um just sitting facing you.
It's like to me it's just like what what is about to go down? I just I like the question there. And uh what does go down I am also pretty happy with. Honestly, it's like part of the inspiration for the book of this guy comes from the book. There's a there's a character called the judge in that book who's a described as like a seven foot tall, you know, maybe albino hairless man. And and I love the image of that guy. And so this is just my little nod to one of my favorite books of all time.
And um and it's also it's like I don't have a nemesis in this movie, you know, that that the games use, which is like this gigantic hulking, you know, Terminator that's following you, but this is also like a little bit of a nod to the to the Nemesis. Nice. I don't want to give too much away. Whatever it is that's coming out of the door, but but I will say that there's a mechanic that I've I've put into this movie that is I'm already it might be in some of the games and I just can't remember it being in some of the games, but basically it's a way the infected interact with each other and it's something that kind of pursues him throughout throughout the movie.
And so I don't I I don't want to say too much, but I'm really excited for how this specific creature, for lack of a better term, um how it how it changes and how um how it how it evolves the course of the film is really fun. Believe it or not, doesn't utilize zombies that much. It's much more focused on like the weird creature stuff than the zombies. There's really only two scenes, maybe three actually, now that I think about it, where there's like proper zombie stuff going on and two of those three are in this trailer.
There's this one right here, and then there's the one where he's running through the city streets and zombies are like detonating around him. But other than that, um it's it's not it's not the I wouldn't call this like a zombie movie necessarily. I just feel like you have this opportunity for the T- virus to do all these really fascinating things to the human body and to the world around you. And so to just limit it to zombies feels like a squandered opportunity. So, um, so I tried to I tried to, you know, really vary it up.
One of the best moments in RE2 is the true ending. Yeah. where it's like you think they're all dead and then this [ __ ] giant blob with teeth starts coming after you on the drawers and the empty because one of the things that like is so integral to playing Resident Evil is you're constantly searching for healing items and ammunition, right? And that's what he's doing in these scenes where he's going through the drawers. He's found a shotgun. He's got no shells. He's got to find the shells. So, he's got to like comb this house for these like vital, you know, bits of ammunition.
And so you can't really do a proper, you know, love letter to the games without without that. And so I've also hidden some I I think you can see one in this trailer. Maybe there's a plant camera screen left over his right shoulder. You can kind of see it in the movie. The shot pulls back farther than you can see it. But I took the the green herb from Resident Evil 4 and I replicated the bucket. Exactly. You can see the bucket there at the very end with the like the horizontal copper striping on it and the and the the herb is like ex is like exact for the for the Resident Evil 4 thing, which is probably the the game I've played the most out of this series.
Even though this lives in the world of two, I just wanted to use a little bit of four in here. Um, just cuz it's my That was cool about like four did all this weird body horror [ __ ] because they got away from the T- virus. will notice. As much as four is the game I've played the most, I don't think it's very scary. You know, four does not [ __ ] day one. This is my boy. It's not scary. Games do. I mean, for me, the scary this guy [ __ ] gets it. When you're when you're being pursued by the giant baby in in the dark pretty [ __ ] crazy.
[ __ ] hell yeah, dude. He's actually played the game. He's busting it. But the reason that I keep coming back to four is because the world is so big. The game is so huge. The mechanics are fantastic. Um, and it does lean a little bit more action um than some of the more horror ccentric ones. But I I don't know. I just I find it so so relentlessly playable. Um, I just I'm always interested in how how it kind of goes from location to location to location and you got to go through, you know, at some point you're on a boat and then you're you're on like a Indiana Jones Temple of Doom kind of mine cart thing going get this guy on the screen.
It's just like there's so much to do in that game. And I think that that's something that I really dug about for is that you're not just trapped in one mansion and you've got to unlock a room and then go here and then unlock another room. you're moving through a world. And so that's something that I really really um took from that that game in particular. And one of the other things that is in this movie that that that comes directly from the games is the need for keys and and for padlocks being barriers. You know, if you've ever played one of these games, you know that you always come to have what you need to get to the other side and you have to go through hell to get the key to get out of here.
And so that that happens I'd say about four times over the course of this movie where he's like what the what is with all the padlocks manage will recognize exactly you know what I'm doing. No. All right. I'm a little bit of a problem on the road. I was wondering if I could use your phone. It takes place almost in real time but not really. There's a lot of time jumps but yeah it takes place over the course of one one evening. I I I'm I'm I'm sort of existing just adjacent to it because I'm not obsessed with the timeline.
For me, it's like this is this is the first night that the T- virus has broken out and in this movie it is like started in in Raccoon City and he's got to go straight into the eye of the storm. Um and so that's that's that's the deal. So I I believe that you know when Leon arrives at the police station that's that's still kind of like day zero, right? where's, you know, freshly gone wrong. So that's that's the timeline. Now um and I'm a little fuzzy. Well, he's like I'm not really sure. I don't think it matters, but I'm just kind of like Yeah.
No, actually he's late in the police station. That nuking doesn't happen in this like brushed. Yes. Day zero. but uh so so yeah, this exists this exists on like day one Raccoon City. [ __ ] just went south. It's technically RE2 because R2 is more interesting. Right. Well, RE3 is before two and then after two, but he's chronologically not wrong, but like we're talking a matter of days. Like it's to the point of who cares. It doesn't matter. Doesn't matter. Yeah, there you go. It's not important where it's like, oh, whatever. Like I I was given um nothing but but support.
And so um I know there's also global warming, Chad. stories you hear about about filmmakers dabbling with IP and running into all sorts of frustrate change. Climate change. There you go. I'm in like a seriously messed up situation. Climate change, chat. Okay, that was [ __ ] awesome. Yeah, I can't wait. I can't [ __ ] wait. Yeah, even more. Right. And and and like I you know, I I forgot your name person in the chat. He's like, it doesn't really feel like Resident Evil to me now. What do you have to say? I still love you though. But I'm just saying.
What do you have to say, sir? It doesn't to him. Well, that's fine. And you know what? You're entitled to that because Resident Evil has been so many different things for so long now that Well, I think he's also doing the a better approach, which is more thematic. You got to keep ban keeping the plot kind of moving forward. Like like RE4 is like a very forward momentum game. Four, you don't ever fixate this. You're never fixated in one spot. You loop around the castle kind of, but the time by the time you realize you've made a loop, it's time to go to the next spot.
So, yeah, like he it's it's like, okay, he's doing sort of like a four like move forward constantly, not stay in one location and then just unlock too long. Yeah. Cuz you spend like like 90% of RE1. What I like, he's kind of foring it and twoing it at the at the same time. Yeah. two two moves forward quite a bit where it's like half the game is RPD and then a quarter of the game is sewers and then the last quarter is the nest crimson Crimson Konics. Shout out to everyone that made it there.
Let's touch a button. So, the reason I wanted to do uh have a Darkstalkers day is because the Darkstalkers tournament at uh Evo Japan was incredible. Crimson actually found two people who play Darkstalkers. They found a good chunk like these dudes that committed their lives. I'm just so happy Crimson was finally able to go to Japan. Yeah, it was him. I know he was talking about it for so long. Hey, I'm so glad to finally visit Japan. The game requires so much of you to make so many decisions so fast that the players that have been playing this for 20 years were like physically like completely perturbed at the end of matches cuz they were playing at like their hard they're like like it was like crazy to see like they weren't breathing cuz the game no chance to breathe or think.
So that once it was over they were like like they would do that [ __ ] It was like whoa. This is what old games used to be like. Well, you know, I was I was watching uh the um I was like tuning in and tuning out like um of the uh X-Men versus Street Fighter or whichever one you were watch with just the crazy infinite like oh thanks for playing. thanks for playing. Oh yeah, that was that shit's actually hard. And and for you all that like oh like man this game like for all you thinking like dude you didn't play in the times of our days man it was just like that way the whole time.
thanks for playing. Thanks for playing infinite. Yeah. And then but you need Steve to tell that story. We went to like a Capcom party and they had the game and then Steve just did freaking crazy infinite on this guy and the guy and Steve's like, "Hey man, good game." The guy's like, "Infinets." Yeah. And he shook his hand. Steve just [ __ ] went like played this guy. Ha ha. Did the same thing in that in that tournament. Didn't let the guy play. And the guy's like, "Hey man, good." And the guy's like, "Yeah, infinite." It was not a good game to him.
I mean, that's how he got That's how he got his name. It's not a good game to him. All right. It was not happy. That was not happy. Uh, yeah, Darkstalkers won. Chad, is there anything crazy in the Japanese version? Look how the logos change. Wars are uh chat. Is there anything like weird in the Japanese version that's better or is it mostly the same thing? Before I get my drink, does this have the screen where you see Akuma and then you see a guy that looks like Akuma? Yeah, it's a Vampire Savior. That to me I the Dirty Beret guy.
Yeah, the Beret. But I didn't know. I'm like, what? Who is that guy? Wasn't that like the whole time when I used to see that? Okay. I didn't I I didn't know who that was. I remember seeing that. I'm like, "Oh, wait. Who's that?" Kenny Drake, don't worry. It's got a lid. This was the Dark Soccer that I technically played the most. Uh, okay. I'll be RB. That's me. Uh, actually, Chad. Yeah. What is the um what is the premium in terms of uh gameplay? Do we want to do uh speed two or speed three?
You're going to spill. Wasn't this one of the games where like if you actually crank the speed, it broke it? Oh, all all old games are like you wouldn't even have consistent. Yes, it wouldn't be cons was the all old games weren't consistent at all, Hold on a second. AB GB. Oh, wow. They're really doing this to me. They're really light kick circle medium. I think that's I think it's control type B. Yep. Oh my god. I can't even do soul. Wow. Look how shitty this is. Look at that. Okay, one goes full screen. Thank god.
Holy crap. Oh my god. Crazy chick. So, you just do combos on the ground. You just do light uh crouching, light kick, medium kick, heavy kick, and you just you do like a sweep combo. She She's not in charge, is she? No. Uh she might I think charge down back to like forward like back to forward is her uh like splash move. But that might be later. Might be way later. Magic series. Yes. Air fireball. That's insane. Ah, there it is. So, even in this one, it's like a little bit more uh it's it's a little bit speedy.
It's actually faster than I remember. We're on part one, right? Yeah, this is the first one. Gang Stakers. Oh, that takes you back to here. Jeez. Darkstalkers. The Night Warriors, too. I'm Victor Re. You'll be a sexy ass fish, man. shape of [ __ ] water here. Let's go. Trying to get the negative dark suckers. Exactly. So when one happens, you thank me. That's how that works. Look all Phobos in the background. Oh, I want to have charge. This is an old game. [ __ ] What's grab on this one? Uh, just old school. Uh, foresh the tech head.
I don't know if that's not in this one. Chad, how many of you would have [ __ ] the fish man water? I was blocking low. What the [ __ ] You ask this question every time. I'm not getting answers. GIVE ME A [ __ ] ANSWER. GIVE ME A [ __ ] answer. Hey, so it just goes back. That's nice. Thanks, Capcom. I'll stick with Victor. I need to figure out moves. I showed you the Dark Soccer machine that I played when I was uh young. It was in that goddamn pizza place when we filter. Oh, yeah. Yeah, they still had it.
They made pizza or something. Dude, Victor literally can't move or dash. I think we got screen tearing, [ __ ] I found someone. How did I do that? Damn. Where's my butt grab? Hold on a second. WHAT THE [ __ ] WHAT the grab? Yeah, he does. He's good. Oh, his ass cheeks come out. Yeah. Has a special move. Cut him in half. You give him the rod. God, look at that chin. Mhm. He grabs you by his butt cheeks. His butt chin. Hold on a second. Let me uh let me see if I can get close to me.
No, that's not it. Oh, stop. Half circle back. Victor's normals are okay. Hold up. Hold up. Hold up. I'm doing Just a regular grab. It's not a regular grab. I regular one. Don't listen to him. No. No. Shut up. Hi, Gigab Buster. Mega shock. Gigab brute. gigas glute. Giga burn. Uh, that's not it. That's the one I did. That was the big kick. Does he not get the butt grab in this? He must. He must. I didn't know it was a special move. I thought it was just a regular move. No. Uh, chat, am I Are we drunk?
Nobody plays Dark Sers one. Wait, Gyro Crush. Oh, I don't think that's it. No, that's not it. Half circle park punch. That's That's Stop being wrong. Give Max correct inputs or stop talking. Mega strangle. Okay, it's called Mega Strangle. Have to find it. Strangle. Mangle. Uh, mega strangle. Near opponent. Forward to back with uh heavy kick. Hold on a second. No. YOU'RE A FOOL, CHAT. YOU [ __ ] FOOL. WOW. BOOTS. JEEZ. You see like his legs, chat, YOU'RE A [ __ ] FOOL. I DON'T THINK HE HAS IT IN THIS. I'll go back and fix. I don't think Yeah.
It's in the sequel. This game is also a love letter to animation just in general. Uh I thought that was Third Strike. Uh, it is. Which one's more of a love letter? Because you can only make love to one. Well, that's the thing is that animation is all love. Damn, this man said animation's a Molly. Crazy. Someone hit up Zanos. Night warriors. And they really gave a lot of fun. Actually, they added functionality to this game. They after they put it into Capcom Fighting Collection 2 and the Marvel collection, there were things they went back and added to this.
Like versus was it versus? I think versus mode is legit added to the game, right chat, that was not there before. Like it was just raw just loading a ROM. Yep. And it would just like turn it on. I think all the training and all that stuff. Oh my god, look at this [ __ ] stage. Beautiful. I remember. Uh, where's my dash? Oh my god. No [ __ ] forward dash. I can only back dash like a weirdo. She hasn't died, dude. I remember up and down. Uh, DP with kick. They had this in uh the roster something small.
It's the same size as old as the same thing as all the old games. Chat, again, this isn't on the same hardware as Dark Sockers 2 and 3. This is on CPS one. So the same [ __ ] that did in Street Fighter 2, you get like six charact. You know what's wild? How long that Felicia sprite stayed. Definitely did not. Not as long as Morgan's. But Felicia's sprite just never changed by Yeah. Morgan. I think it's the most used sprite of fighting game history. Yeah. Morgan show up all the way to fighting jam. Victor should have been in a Marvel.
This was always CPS 2. Lord Raptor should have been in a Marvel. This one's CPS2 or CPS one, I believe. So, I think Super Turbo was the first CG2 fighting game. That's what I mean. These came out like right at the same time. The reason why like Victor um John Tallbane or Lord Raptor never showed up in a Marvel game is because horny. Yeah, of course. Your face at this point. Cuz the horny. I said it. The wine. I'll say it again. It's red. Oh no, it's blood. What was that song? Okay, let me try to remember the name.
All right, he goes UB4. CB something four. This was a YEAR AFTER ST. NO, this was 194 UB4. Hey, UB40. I was close. Droid, are you excited for the Resident Evil movie, Steve? Uh, I made a video. Oh, the tubes. Look at He made a video. Look at the tubes. You guys, you have to see the director talk about the trailer. If you hear the director talk about it, you like, "Oh, shit." Okay, get it. Oh, does he? We all watched it together. Okay. We're going to say cuz I saw the trailer. What did you like about it?
Uh, literally nothing to do with President. I need to have this conversation. You missed it. I literally What is Resident Evil? Resident Evil is the Leon Chris. Steve, do you like R7? Do I like R7? I understand that and I and I made that a point in the video that Oh, well, there could be a chance because they did talk about Ethan and Ethan uh Wait, you want Ethan to be in it? No, I'm saying that the idea of of reinventing and rebooting the characters and, you know, uh, going back to the horror of what Resident Evil is is fine, but I'm sorry if you're not going to give us like one liquor, not one dog, not one, uh, tyrant, then none of that stuff really matters.
I'm sorry. You got to give us something. So, I mean, sure, sure, you can make something new, but if you're going to go back to Raccoon City, you better give us what the hell was in Raccoon City. Don't sit there and and uh give us some people uh arms and legs coming out of a door and tell us that's Raccoon City cuz that's not what we saw when we were there. he's got some people on his back. Yeah, I know there's an audience with a fan or something. Zim is not a fan. What? If he likes it, he likes it.
I don't I like it. I like the idea of it because I don't like being married to the same [ __ ] [ __ ] for [ __ ] 30 years. Absolutely. I agree. Video games, you know, in video games. Good change. Hey man, video game. Close one. But like like I said, the uh the director is well known. He's well respected. Weapons was amazing. I haven't seen Weapons, but everyone says the Weapons was insane. So, I give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm I'm not going to knock it, but I'm just saying for what I saw so far, I I'm I'm not happy.
He's on the way. Oh, man. Weapons and barbarian. I saw Barbarian. It was I'mma watch them both. It was It was scary, but I mean that last the last part of our barbarian was Hey, I'm talking about I'm going watch it. Stop [ __ ] tearing and [ __ ] I figureated. I haven't seen it. I don't know. Bam. could be smoother than this. But everybody was was well saying underrated talk. He's got a great he's got a great take and he's he speaks his mind. He's underrated. You want to check it again or Yeah. I'm going to try to take that back saying Shto.
You're Barbarian had you [ __ ] up because it's the idea that you're in this strange house and you go man I don't know. I'm going to watch it. YOU HAVEN'T SEEN BARBARIAN? NO. HOW OLD IT IS DUDE? Spoilers man. God damn it. The movie is old as [ __ ] man. I'm old too. Damn. See, the thing is is like putting [ __ ] you know, it doesn't make the movie good. It's not going to make the movie. Absolutely. We did that with Welcome to Rac We We did that with Stop, Max. Don't Don't You better relax. You better relax.
Like just putting things that I know what that is. Like that to me is like that's a recipe for disaster. It's nostalgia bait. And I understand. I get it. I get it. What you're doing is you're giving it more of the benefit of the doubt than most of us are. And I I don't feel one The majority of people are super into it. It's getting very very well. I don't know. I don't feel one way or the other. Again, like RE7 was not Resident Evil at all. I would I would be But it was Resident Evil.
I I would be less irritated if it didn't have the title of Resident Evil. If it was its own thing, I'd be like, well, but it has the title of Resident Evil and it has nothing to do with Resident Evil. That's irritating. But would you say it could be just like Outbreak? Sure. But Outbreak had glitters. outbreaks at um you know dogs outreach. You know what though? Because here's the thing. When you're adapting a movie from a 30year-old video game, you don't want to put liquors and dogs and necessarily hunters in there. Why? Because you know exactly what they are, what they do.
There's nothing scary about it. It's like when you watch like the eighth part of a horror movie and it's like where's where's where's the xenomorph? What's Jason doing? Why like you know why isn't the xenomorphs here? Like what is like at this point in time what is scary about a Zen that comes from somebody who's been that invested in the franchise. He's overseen that stuff. But the thing is you have to listen to the guy talk about it. He's invested in the franchise. He's super invested. He's super invested. He talks about all of Resident Evil and then when you hear him talk about it, he [ __ ] gets it.
He's not like a guy that's like, "Oh, well, you know, like the thing I love about Street Fighter is like when Ryu goes and like no, you can tell that the [ __ ] guy knows." He was talking like Resident Evil 4. He's like, "Oh, dude." And then you hear him talk about Res Oh [ __ ] Yeah. Okay. He knows. He played the [ __ ] game. He didn't He didn't like listen to it. What is this bitch's moves? But anyways, and the thing it's hard to tell cuz the first one that he knows and he's just like I'd like to think that the the T virus mutates things way more different from what we just seen in the games, right?
Like so like being like and like yeah we've seen the T buyers do the things but I like to like imagine like hey the T- virus works in crazy [ __ ] ways like depends on who gets also wouldn't it be better if they did put liquors all over the trailer and to surprise you with one in the movie. Would that be way better cuz you're not expecting it. I absolutely would but there's nothing that about that challenge that says you see Tony be quiet. There's nothing about that challenge um Resident Evil. It's the same thing. Okay.
So let's break it down. Let's break it down. No, no, wait, wait, wait, wait. Okay, it's the same thing with the Mummy. A new Mummy movie came out and it has nothing to do with Brendan Fraser's Mummy, right? A new um uh Evil Dead just came out. It has nothing to do with the original Evil Dead. Why the [ __ ] would I want to watch an Evil Dead movie that has nothing to do with that, but that title says Evil Dead? At a certain point, I don't want to watch a [ __ ] movie that has title bait.
Well, it's about a dude going in a dude that is not Leon or Chris going into a place unequipped and unready. Yeah. And then something weird is going on. He's pretty much stuck. He has to start looting. He's looking for [ __ ] He finds things. He finds a gun, a small gun. He eventually loots more, finds keys, gets things, gets a shotgun, gets better. It's Resident Evil. It's literally It's literally what Ethan directly goes through in R7. And I'm I'm all for it. If I don't see anything that relates to that in Raccoon City, which is what he's claiming he's in, he's in another part of He's in Raccoon City in the end.
Huh? He's in a city in the end. He's literally He goes to He goes He goes to the city. He goes to the city and I see like falling bodies from the sky. Yeah, there's weird [ __ ] happening. Like, okay. And that's why I'm like, "Okay, there's something there. Obviously, there's there's zombies there that they're not showing." Again, this is a teaser, so we can't go off of what everything that we um I've come to as a definitive idea. I'm not I'm not watching anything more. I want to not know anything. No. Okay. Okay. Yeah. I want to go in and know nothing.
Okay, that's cool. I I I was like getting kind of bummed out that I was watching the the director's commentary on it and I was like actually I'm learning too much. He was talking and all the Yeah. No ab like but the thing is also the director's commentary like the way he taught like okay I [ __ ] I [ __ ] with this guy. I get it. Like he gets it. He knows what like Resident Evil is. So yeah, [ __ ] it. And again this is a teaser. They're not showing us much. And if they don't and if they don't show you too much, then that's fine.
I'm perfectly fine. I again, from what I saw, I wasn't I wasn't too pleased. But that's because I wasn't given any indication that this is Resident Evil. I don't want somebody I don't want somebody to take the idea and make whatever the [ __ ] they want out of it. That is that is what I see when I see the trailer. So, of course, they're going to be disappointed. the even from the first time I saw the trailer, I got I got uh But you have no idea what he's going to make for the full movie. So, I'm okay with that.
No, but for me, HE'S TRYING TO SURPRISE US. FINE. WE DON'T want another Star Fox incident, No, but for me, that's fine. When I saw it, I got uh Outbreak vibes. Well, you know, but it's a thing, too. There it could turn out to be not good regardless exactly how you feel like it could go either way. Hey, man. We What was What did we get? that that one Resident Evil that was true to the cannon on Netflix and um that was full of characters. Uhhuh. That was full of characters. Yeah, it's full of characters.
It had all the characters, but it wasn't good. So, yes, it could go either way. Like, yeah. See, but really good. It's very It's very easy for things to go wrong and there's a good chance it could go right. So, I'm I'm hopeful. I'll give it her moves. I need to know what her moves are cuz I'm like they're coming out at random. All I know is her [ __ ] cat scratch. Something consistent one. Yeah, it's record. Welcome to Raccoon City, not the other one, chat. We don't talk about the other one. We'll talk about Bruno.
I can do that. I'm trying. Yeah. If Zack Prior is as good as you say, Chad, I I doubt 100%. Yeah, it it had it felt more Silent Hill than it was Resident Evil. It absolutely did. Not that movie is already happening. Dang it. Right. But all the all the stuff you you um mentioned, Max, where he's like, you know, doing Resident Evil stuff. He's collecting items and and doing all this stuff. Guess what? Guess what? Silent Hill. Guess what? Silent Hill got that from Resident Evil. So, it's more Resident Evil than it is. The thing is people Resident Evil is two people very different things cuz it's Resident Evil has been very different things for a long time.
Most people think of Resident Evil as RE 5 and and beyond. Yeah, I think Ari like literal what Ari is from the [ __ ] movies which is crazy. And what and what I said in my in my um review is that is like you do just watch if you want a Resident Evil movie that's stupid and stuff and it isn't terrible just watch the CG movies. What you're fine one good CG movie. Hey uh one it gives you everything you want from Resident Evil. Does it? I don't know if that's true. Okay, stop hating on the CG movies.
Those movies are pretty bad. Big fat hater. Those movies are great. Those movies are great. Leon was killing. It was so good, Max. Those movies were so good that they referenced it in uh Resident Evil [ __ ] 9. So yeah, it Leon literally drove by those [ __ ] dogs and they chased the [ __ ] out of him because they're like, "This scene is [ __ ] badass and we love this movie." Right. But the the the It was awesome. The he wasn't killing innocent people. Leon literally murders people on the freeway. Yeah, it was. As he's shooting those dogs, it's like damn Leon.
Max. Really? They kind of deserve it. [ __ ] those guys, right? [ __ ] bystanders. Yeah, [ __ ] those guys. Leon's like, "You're going to die anyway." Just like Superman. Just like Superman in Injustice because he literally shoots lasers at cars and he blows them up. [ __ ] those people. [ __ ] those guys. And [ __ ] them kids. and you know it's um I don't know like when I when I played seven and I was first playing seven and that made me think I'm like dude what if Resident Evil is just all these different kind of crazy events I think people think they know what they want they have no [ __ ] clue what they want um and people need to be given the thing that they think they want but it's actually completely It's sad.
People have no [ __ ] clue what they want. Okay, so I'm going to say this right now. So I said, you know, Resident Evil is about Leon and and Jill and stuff like that. Resident Evil at its core is virus is like the force do machina. It can do whatever it wants. Absolutely. Resident Evil is about uh a company that is [ __ ] over all of these people and they have to find a way to survive what they put out for everyone. Um, and you look at uh the status of Resident Evil 5 and you get the idea of what they did with Resident Evil 4 and they're just [ __ ] over innocent people and you're going through that entire uh scenario um hearing about the stories when you read the little uh the books and uh you know their diaries and stuff like that and you realize that this is just a company that [ __ ] over innocent people and uh at a certain point you're doing your best to stop them from uh you know spreading a virus.
and [ __ ] uh uh [ __ ] up even more all all for the sake of one [ __ ] to become immortal pretty much. Um and that's the core of it at the end of the day. It can be about whoever the [ __ ] it wants to be with. You know, like Resident Evil doesn't necessarily have to be about the heroes that are established. Absolutely not. I I totally get that. Part is mostly about like survival. It's about surviving a horror. Surviving these crazy [ __ ] things and then you learn more. All right. It escalates, gets bigger and bigger and bigger.
And there's a pace to it. There's always a pace. Let's see what works. Weird [ __ ] If that [ __ ] ain't fighting that tired at the end of the movie, I'm going to be disappointed. Why does it need to be a tyrant though? It doesn't have to be a tire. It has to be a big giant ugly mother. Yeah. Something something. I get the idea if he's like, "Hey, I wanted to show like other T- virus creatures." Yes. because I don't want people to sit there and be like like expecting to see something and then know exactly how shit's going to play out because it's like it's it's going to it's a nemesis.
It's going to have a gun or it's going to do something with it big tentacles and it's like and you're just kind of where's the tension? Where's everything? We're just kind of expecting to like, you know, be spoonfed our nostalgia. You know what's you can introduce those characters and still not have that. You can introduce those characters having to do something completely different or the the outcome could be could be completely different. almost every scenario that um Resident Evil has has uh given us with those characters um I felt tension especially in RE uh 9 where the liquors finally show up like towards the the end whatchamacall and what the [ __ ] and next thing you know there's like [ __ ] 12 of them in a in a room you're like holy [ __ ] I don't have enough ammo double double what's wild chat double Capcom's own master mold oh yeah we're still PLAYING WE'RE NOT DONE THIS AN ACTUAL GAME YOU KNOW what I wish I wish that they would have had um a hutel in Marvel vs.
Capcom cuz then Capcom could have its own freaking Sentinel. This is like Look, this is Master Mold right here. Like Capcom could have their own Sentinel. I'm uh It is a It's a legendary like Oh, it's the This thing is the Golden Army. it's the the legend of the gold. It's from It is actually from Mayan or Inca. Like it was like this. Yeah. IT was like you [ __ ] Be like a robot. You big [ __ ] Yeah. Ancient Mayan like Oh, look. They had like a robot. But dude, that's that's a master mole. They could have their own freaking sentinel tongue.
Oh my god. You know, dude, you know what's wild? If if let's say Capcom said, "Well, we can't get Marvel if we just Capcom versus Capcom." They want to bring in Sentinel. They have Util. No. Aka Phobos. Oh, you just said yes. Oh, two. You want two? Two. He's too crazy. Oh, okay. Smash. You love Felicia. That's your favorite character. Smasher. We were hanging out today. He's like, "Man, you know what? I wish I could play Felicia." That works. Just have it. She has Colin likes a strong chain. What? Dude, it looked like he said click click like block or something.
What did you say? Awesome though. Was that I think he's crouching low kick to what? Most scared of crouching low kick. Crouching kick. Crouching heavy kick. I want to try to do the combo that the um the Lilith player was doing. chat. They did a ground string into a uh a demon input and it did [ __ ] crazy damage. I want to try it. What kind of kick was that? She jumped upside down and kicked him. A guile. How do you guys feel about to Hulk is wild? Hulk and Sherry. Is it like It's like It's like a Shut up, Steve.
It's like planet hole. Max. Max. He doesn't know. Oh, he's unknowing. He's unknowing. Never mind. I missed something. Steve missed something. Not you. See the to trailer? Oh. Oh, I guess the tool trailer. I didn't say I didn't say anything. You guys quit talking about the to trailer. This came from a vault, guys. Leave him alone. From a vault. A vault. A vault. We could show Japan. I didn't say it. Oh, it's it's like world war or or it's like planet Hulk Hulk. He even says it too. I can't select her. Okay, there it go.
I was going to say like what is Okay, there it goes. Um Yeah, I don't like his costume. I'm like all that [ __ ] off of him. Wait, did you No, no, we're not talking about that. We're talking about something else completely. Oh, you have [ __ ] off of them, you know? Like it looks [ __ ] weird. Look at all this clunky [ __ ] Yeah. Well, it's from like a comic one that he references. I mean, I get it. I I get what it's from, but I don't like Yeah. You saw that? You dude, this Dimmitri was the same [ __ ] sprite they used in Fighting Jam.
Oh, no. Every Dark Soccer sprite you have ever seen that was in something else is from this except she's not here because she's just the second one. Yeah, they show up on Is this character shut off? Yeah, it is. Old school DPS, so they're not easy. Are you playing Bishim or Demetri? See Bishim. Oh, no. No, no, no. Demetri is the show. Fishimon is like a charge character. Back forward punch, back forward kick. Savage lands on. All right. Okay. All right. You comic nerds. I get it. Not the same thing. I didn't know. I just thought, you know, oh, it's like I just think he's too bulky with all that stuff.
Like it's too distracting. I just want to like see him. I want a classic costume. The point doesn't get across any better by putting it in all caps. No down up. I don't know. I don't think he has down [ __ ] It's all about chains into big [ __ ] and big big dumb normals. This is a cool franchise. Kind of shame it never it never caught on. Guess how long it was around for? Big fans don't want to buy it. It's been around for 32 years. No. Guess that's how long it was actually around for. Actually, what do you mean by years?
Three years. Everything about from 1 to three. Yes. Everything that came after that was iterative of what had already been done, No, I know that. Well, because they made three games and none of them caught on ever. Yes, pretty much. They It was It was from like 90 pretty much 1994 to 1997. That's it. Some console ports, you know, in 98 or whatever, and that was kind of it. Yeah, the Dark Socks 3 was 98. So, I got it from EV. Yeah, that guy spear just flew away. Had a great time. Uhuh. the PS Yeah, the PSP game, the Darkstalkers anthology, you know, uh Darkstalkers Resurrection, all games just the versions of this, you know, graffiti in the chat.
Yeah. The last official Darkstalkers game with three. Mhm. And then and then the other versions like Vampire Savior 2 are just three Yeah. Variations. And the only just different characters because they couldn't no memory. They couldn't make any more. Which special? Oh, with the uh use Talbane. With Talbane? No, you're all about chains. Ground chains. Marble chains on the ground. Oh, wow. Yeah. And you dash forward and you dash specials. And it was like same special and it was blowing. You have to do the special one. You just did it. You did the big beast thing.
That was it. You mean this? There's no supers. Yeah, that was it. Yes. This game has no like big supers. There's like like enhanced versions of special. Oh, okay. Gotcha. Yi. I'm crying. All my Darkstalkers lore I learned from [ __ ] project cross in there. Yeah, let's see what's cuz whoever wrote that game was very much like in tune with a lot of things. Like I said, like I'd have to try to see if I can get someday on emulation. There's a level cuz every level, you know, whatever every m map, whatever. There's a level where you have to go.
You're following Bison, right? And and like you is trying to get Bison has Ken, but he's making a violent Ken brainwash. God, she's [ __ ] insane. So, they have this confrontation encounter and the lines and dialogue are actually pulled from the animated movie. So, they actually sort of recreated a scenario in the game like, oh, Bison has violent Ken. You got to like knock the sense out of Ken and then then you have to do like a team up and kill Bison. So it's like, "Oh man, this guy really this whoever made it and wrote this game really [ __ ] loved everything." It's a shame is is trash.
But damn, the special like they're they go away so much time to use them. Weird. It is. Yeah, that was it. That was very Yeah. A lot of special damage, too. Yeah. Yeah, the vampire savior top eight was one of the best top eights I think I've ever seen. Incredible. They play it on this arcade machine. Arcade machine. Vampire Savior Community. Third spike community in Japan. They don't play on anything else but arcade machine. Wow, that's about who playless box and leverless. You can still find an arcade machine for that over there. The community is a very distilled looking.
Look at my nipples. Can you milk them? that way. I mean there is a there is a sort of like small boom like retro arcades in Japan and like even areas outside of Tokyo or like rural stuff that's the the youths are actually kind of getting into it. They like having the whole go community and the communal aspect of going to like an arcade playing some old games. There was a there was a part in Blanca when where the top eight was starting and they were getting everybody excited for the top eight and it went across the audience which was packed.
Every single person in that audience the youngest person was 35, baby. Oh, really? Absolutely. Every single the entire audience was packed with every most of them were in their 40s and over the age of 35. It was just like all the the UN location. It's like our fans. All Uggs. I heard they hate I'm a chopped dump. They hated the um exhibition the way it was handled. Yeah, there is some goofiness around it apparently. They just they don't like the whole they didn't want to be like hype thing up. They're like it's a respectful thing, right?
It's like a golf game. They like they like two two rivals are going to play more respectable, you know? It's it's more like it what it had a specific name and it's it's a it's a form of competition which is like you're putting everything on the line. The spirit like I'm a spirit. So that isn't something to be like, you know, uh that isn't something to be like disrespected. Where it's like turned into a spectacle like no no you're doing this because you're giving it your all like type of situation. And it's not about money.
So it's a it it just missed the mark in terms of like what this what it was to the Japanese players was a lot different than what it was to potentially like EVO, you know, for them actually like marketing it. Go that way. What she done? It's about to kill itself and not the audience's enjoyment, right? Which is why they don't like the marketing aspect of it. You know, the thing is I can kind of respect I can respect that where it's like, hey, you know, just let them duel it out. We don't need to have like this big weird like spectator or like just be all loud and annoying and obnoxious.
Like we want to see them uninterrupted, no distractions at their peak fighting. I don't think you guys saw it, but they literally had showcase matches before they had a City of the Wolves first to seven and a Tekken 8 first to seven, With different players. And then it led into the main event which was the first to 10 with Diggo and Mena. That's what we want. That's literally what we want. Iron Even Mighty Keef wants that. We've been talking about that being like a Capcom Allstar situation since [ __ ] before Marvel 3 died or after sorry after Marvel 3 died.
So it goes like we we asked Capcom directly about that um in the early 2010s and they said that uh their producers already did that and it didn't work. So, it's not happening. This is wrong. Oh, no. Made for Capcom fighting gem and it didn't work. Never doing it again. I thought the game had come Fighting Jam. Yes. It just was it was before it came out. Yeah. Before we played it. It definitely did. The concept was there. We were excited. Yeah, everyone was excited. It was like, damn. So, CBS was the last game and it was like, holy [ __ ] another cap fighting game.
[ __ ] crazy. I mean, honestly, the the the thing about it is that it played bad. That could have easily happened to CBS. Well, it played bad and it looked bad. Yeah. So, so it had a lot going for it. Had a lot going for it. Imagine that VCI played good. It looked bad. I mean, that's the same thing with CBS 2. It's like, oh, well, I mean, it had a great concept, but you know, guess what? It played great and it looked great. I mean, because because it's good. Well, that's the difference between good or It had it had a lot of potential to be good.
The games that are usually known as being some of like the best of something usually have a combination of these things. They look amazing. They have great rosters. They play amazing and they have incredible music. So, there you go. The roster. I thought the roster was pretty decent. And Fighting Jam. Yes. Look at it again. Oh my god. It's [ __ ] terrible. It's [ __ ] awful. It's weird because it's mostly a lot of Street Fighter like trying to splur Well, this is alpha. This is No, it's it for a fighting jam. It It is [ __ ] awful. They had they had they had characters in games I never knew existed.
Well, they had an entire Red Earth section. Yeah, Red Earth. There was no no Hayato, no Jin, you know, Capam. It's basically almost Street Fighter Jam with Red Earth and what it is. It's not Capcom Jam. Well, like there's Morgan and Ditri, I think. I guess. Yeah, cuz they had a section for Street Fighter 3. They had a section for Street Fighter Alpha. They had a section for Street Fighter 2. And that's not what we want. And then they had a section for Red Earth. Red Earth Dark Sock. And then and then a section for Dark Soccer and Ingred just Why was that decision made?
Cuz all of those were pre-existing…
