Let's go. Who wants to see some of the latest build of Invincible Versus? The entire roster has now been revealed. The last character that was in the game um outside of the two DLC characters that are showing up was Conquest and they had a cool reveal thing that was happening at the EVO Awards for him, which was pretty neat. I'm kind of just like wanting to uh play the game and show stuff off. Let me go ahead and jump on a call with Rip really quick. We'll go over some stuff and play a couple of matches and show off some of the new characters.
Check. Check. This is sick. Uh hi. How's it going, dude? Going fantastic. I took a nap, so I'm like wide awake. Yeah, good. That's what happens. Like every time I'm feeling like like down, even like a 15 minute to a 30 minute, I'm like, "Woo, I'm good." So, I want to give you guys a big congrats before we get started because you guys are like on the cusp of um going gold right now. That's crazy. Like, how how long has your involvement been in Invincible Versus from like even the early days? I think it's been uh two years since I first saw the game like right around now basically.
So, that was when I was first invited over to Mike's place. He like I didn't know what the game was yet. Oh, that was the recording. Exactly. Yeah. There's a little filming of it where I walk into Mike's place. Uh I think I'm wearing whatever. doesn't matter what I was wearing. But point is, uh, I got my first hands on at the game and it was very, very early. It was just two characters, just Mark and Beast. I think Adam Eve at the time was like an invisible character. So like, see, she has projectiles. We're going to have projectiles in the game.
But yeah, it's been it's been that long now. And I joined the team officially about a year and a half ago, I think. Yeah. So yeah, it's been about that long. Very cool. Um, and yeah, I your your role is effectively a senior character designer. Is that right? Senior combat designer. Combat designer. Okay. So you've you've worked on like individual characters and the overall like general vibe and feel of the game, right? Exactly. So the characters I've worked on so far have been Rexlode, Robot, and Duplicate, but you know, obviously there's 18 characters in the game, so we're play testing every day.
I'm always, you know, giving feedback for everything else as we have a whole team of designers, obviously. Yeah. And that's the the cool part is that like there's also a storied history with this, you know, somewhat familiar development staff. Um, and me and you because I have to remind people of this because I think not a lot of them know. You did the the strategy guide for Killer Instinct. So, yeah. Exactly. We were like trading matches. Exactly. Like we were trading matches a whole bunch like before the game came out to like figure out what's good.
Mhm. Yeah. We were part of the focus test team for Killer Instinct back in the day. 2012, 2013, whatever that was. Yep. And then I ended up doing the Prima strategy guide for that game in the Ultra fan book. So that's how I met a lot of the team and then I came back and met them again during breakaway when they were on the Amazon team and commentated that game. And so it was Ba actually who reached out to me that was like hey we're folks testing a new game. Would you like to come through and see it?
And I had no idea what it was at the time and it ended up being this game. So that's how we got here. Sick. Like that's pretty much how I got, you know, hooked up with KI as well. It's pretty funny. I'm going to go ahead and end uh fire up the game. I think the the best thing or the thing I wanted to do first was just show off um Conquest and have you sort of guide me through unique and cool things that he can do um and what his gimmicks sort of are. And I'll I'll do like a screen share with you right now and I'll we'll be making sure this all this stuff looks good uh just to be sure.
And uh after that I'll kill the screen share and if matchmaking is up and running on here then we'll just like matchmake and try to play some of the newer characters. I definitely want to play Conquest and like Allen uh because we've only seen so much of them so far, you know. No, definitely. And uh I think the lobbies will work. So, I think we just jump to the lobby and do that. Uh open beta will not have the lobbies unfortunately, but it's working well. Gotcha. Um I think the idea is to show off some of the newer characters, right?
Like how everybody is working in the game currently and obviously Conquest is like the latest, you know, currently culturally also relevant character uh to events that's going on. So yeah, let's show up Conquest. Let's get a couple of characters in here. Uh and uh Titan. I have not seen that much gameplay stuff on him. Can you play him pretty well? Yeah, I can play Titan. Sick. He's fun. Okay. I want I definitely want to see what he can do. Okay. Uh this got a couple more in here. All right. So from a there's new there's new stuff.
Let me uh do the penthouse. ready. So, um, Conquest, what's his overall game plan? Is he just like a bruiser? Sort of similar to Omni Omniman or No. Yeah, he's actually pretty similar to Omniman in some ways. Uh, so he's got a projectile. So, using most using Yeah, using Oh, that's his taunt. A little hard for the people. Uh, his circle back is going to be the projectile. And you can actually hit the light button again to send it forward. So, that first part can be kind of a projectile deflector if you want to think of it that way.
Okay. Okay. And the second part actually sends the forward. Uh, does it make the followup projectile more powerful if he if he deflects stuff? No. That would have been a great idea. Bow. Hey, bow. That sounds like a great idea. I think also the uh the boosted version of that did a multi-hitting version of it as well. Oh my god. Okay, that was a good one, too. That was super good, actually. Oh, so this really launches. Oh, yeah. It knocks back super duper far, too. Gotcha. Okay, so these don't angle down. You have to like if you want to get this really close to the ground, I can like maybe Yeah, it's it's kind of tough.
You can sort of use it and cover a little bit of space with an assist. Seriously, very um solid projectile form. I think it's one of the better projectiles in the game actually just in terms of speed and uh the ability the ability to counter other projectiles just because two durability first part to cancel. Gotcha. Um, and then he's got his cursor forward special, which is the the charge you saw earlier. So, this one is wild because you can actually hit the button again earlier to shorten the distance or if it's going to be in range, the character will actually be there as well.
You have a lot more fine-tuned control over it. And the farther he goes, he actually activates super armor. Yeah. And it causes crumple and it causes armor break just cuz it needed, you know, a little extra, I guess. Wo. So, this is going to beat out even um uh even like the alpha counter. It's going to it's going to go through a lot of things. Yeah, exactly. So, super duper powerful move. Uh does have, you know, a little bit of a slow start though, but you know, since he can cancel it earlier, he has a little bit more control over how he wants to play it.
That was like in the chat. Yeah. Wow. Version is basically a stronger version of it. Gotcha. I want more. Um, and then he's got his DP, which is a DP. Uh, so you can go ahead and just try that out. Yeah. And the thing about this DP that's interesting is that it's got a second part to it. So Oh, yes. Right there. And the second part is actually an overhead. So it is pretty effective. And I think you actually charge the second part as well. So if you just hold the button when you're doing the second input, you'll actually charge up and take a little longer.
Go a little higher. Yeah, that one gets a big bounce. Yeah, it's a huge bounce. Uh, and the boosted version of this one is like super powerful. It's got like plus range, hard to interrupt. Uh, and yes, you can cancel straight and normals out of both versions of them. You don't have to do the second hit of it. So, you keep the mind game kind of going that way. Yeah. But that's the specials in a nutshell. Yeah, cuz every character in the game like for the sake of familiarity because you're going to be swapping characters so much.
That's like the goal of the system. Um, every character pretty much has, you know, it a fireball forward, a fireball back, and a a DP, right? So, that's going to be functionally different on every single character. Like what happens in the air might be different than the ground. So, they technically get more special moves, but in the sake of conquest, it looks like like everything he's got works in the air the exact same way as it does the ground. Exactly. And the thing about like his moves and make him a little bit more dynamic. I'd say it's like if you do that forward special in the air, you can actually like recover from it and attack afterwards downward.
So you can do for example air forward special and then on hit do like a down heavy or something. Or down medium. Uh sorry from the forward special in the air. Oh forward special. So Oh sorry I said forward but I forgot your input. Uh you are circle forward special. So yeah. So that one basically and then you can do down and put after play. So it's a little bit slower than Oh, I see. But you can end up having you can catch people really off guard with basically especially but I can also cancel it and boom.
Exactly. Exactly. And that one's a sick move too. That's a down video but charge. So he's got some some similar stuff that um even Allan has where he's like unique like hold down attacks do different Exactly. Yeah. That's a great point. Yeah. So even uh crouching, his crouching medium, if you hold that one, you can get charge medium in a second there also has armor. Oh wow. So it's a hard knock down from that one. So you can set up the oki with your assist etc. His air down medium is that stomp which is straight out of the show if you guys That's cool.
Wait, wait, I got to I got to test. Hold on a second. Uh if I did like Wow, that goes far and it can be kind of ambiguous. Mhm. Yeah, it's a little tricky for sure. If you can do multiple Yeah, it's fun. Um, what else I gonna say about him? He has his air heavy like a headbutt. And that one's also chargeable to be a bigger headbutt. Interesting. If you hit it on a standing opponent, it actually so on stand air charge heavy. I like the way this looks. It's so fun. Oh, yeah. You want to try to do boost dash?
I'm trying to like I have to my my the buttons on boost dash I got to get used to but it's definitely a struggle to learn Bash but yeah super fun. Uh this was in the trailer. I like this. I was like man he's just beating the [ __ ] out of this guy. You definitely seen the show and if you guys have watched the show you probably know headbutts are kind of a thing between cockt. So and in terms of is there any other gimmicks he sort of has or is that the the big primary few?
Okay, I feel like I'm getting something right now. I feel like I'm getting something important right now. Oh, the supers. Yes, the supers are important, too. So, he's got his course forward super, which is this one right here, right? Multi. It goes forward, kind of hones in on the opponent a little bit too. Kind of help you in your alignment a bit. But the other one's more interesting. He's got his course back super, which is the one that drags him across the floor. Now, this one is always going to go to the corner. So if you're in the corner, it's going to do less damage because it's just going to end up right there really quick, right?
So you want to use this one specifically when your opponent Oh my god, he drags him across the whole stage. Ah, cool. Very cool. And this looks like a really easy opportunity for Oh yeah. So that's that's a launch. This is a this is a tag opportunity. Yeah, exactly. If you hold the assist, you can uh you can actually tag off. Yeah. Just like basically every every super in the game gives you this great opportunity to get the tag in, but you don't have to do it off the super. It could be off the any special or any normal even.
So tagging is very open in this game. I would say this move looks great by the way down uh down heavy. He looks awesome. I I realize that I can only do so many of them because if I if I do too many, it's it'll it'll pop out cuz it's a uh it's like a unique attack. I think this is a combo ender. It's over now. Yeah, it's like the more ground bounces or wall bounces you do in the game, the more you kind of uh get hit by the penalty on the combo meter. So, that's kind of the idea there because it's doing a ground bounce off of that stomp, right?
It's going to build up that combo meter faster the more you use in the combo. Yeah. I think in the air if you're doing the boosted DP, that'll automatically swap sides for you. Oh, really? So, so that way you can kind of do the boost DP to swap sides. You can use your back super to go further across the stage cuz that's kind of your like I need to get on the other side of them. Let me do the boosted DP. That'll swap sides and I can do the other way. Show me your interesting. Now we're getting somewhere.
Ah man, I'm going I'm going ham. Um wow. Yeah, he feels like he feels close to Omniman in terms of like speed and stuff like that, which makes sense. He's a Ultramite but uh doesn't have quite like the commanding air super superiority of a character like Allen. And Allen is just whippy zippy man. He's he's all over the place, dude. He moves so much in the air. So I kind of like that. Yeah, that's because he has all of this like grounded armor on a lot of moves and crumble states all over the place. It makes it very fun.
Yeah. And armor break. I forgot to mention that his boosted DP is also an armor break. DP is wo. Yeah, DP is an armor break as well. So, he's got a couple of armor breaks that really just dominate opponents who have a lot of armor. So, Titan's a great example of this, right? Titan is a character that's built around armor. So, if he's armored up, he's got the long form on. All the specials basically have armor on. So, Conquest specifically is going to be good in that matchup using his boosted specials or even just his forward Wow.
Oh, that is crazy good. sit down like a short hop, etc. Yes. Now we're getting some happy is one I need to spend more time with for sure. Yeah, I think all three of your characters right here, they have really good aerial mobility, right? They're all very good at tie dashing and they're very different than a character like Titan who's just super grounded, no air dash at all, no double jump even. So, just completely different, completely separate type of play style. Yeah, I have not seen Titan like really fight a ton outside of the initial trailer.
I'm curious how he like operates because I I love that the game has all these like also directional commands in the air and on the ground. Like obviously on the ground because of standing and crouching, but like he's got this one, he's got forward, which does something different. He's got the down version. like you can really fill out combos and like almost staircase downwards um with the majority of characters which is which is pretty neat. I think the toughest thing and and for me is that I'm having to get used to um what is building the gauge so much the combo gauge cuz this builds a lot and that builds a lot.
So it's like, okay, so how do you work around that? Which is where the optimization of the game is really going to kick in, which is fascinating because these assist drop the combo gauge. And so the thing is too, like a big part of this game is whether your character is a groundbased character or an airbased character. So all three of your characters are airbased characters. So you can only do the boost dash cancel in the air. But every time you do a boost dash cancel in the air, your combo meter is also dropping as well.
Really? So right now you're doing the four headbutts in a row, right? But if you look at a common meter during it, you have like no combo meter used. Wait, I did not know that. So okay, so before I mean we played so many different builds of this over time that it's like hard to remember which game we're playing. Um boost dashes were like heavy heavy heavy and heavies used to build like a lot. So it wasn't this was like 6 months ago. It wasn't necessarily really worth it to do it like in the beta cuz it was like this is neat but I feel like I can only really get it after um for example not that hold on that was pretty sick actually after one of these you know and then you just get all the meter in the world and it's like now I'm going to go crazy I actually have the resources but you're telling me now if I do this uh dude it's not going down.
Oh my god. Yeah. So, you can do much longer combos now during boost dash cancel. Uh so your limiters in the air though are going to be like you can only have one special and one boosted special in the air. Right. Right. So you have to return to the ground to get access to those again. Kind of easy because you can do like a DP to take him back to the ground and then relaunch and get the air boost that more. I'm trying to This is almost like an MVCI heavy heavy heavy heavy combo. It's It's And so Omniman can likely do the same thing as well.
Wow. Wow, dude. So now there's a really big trade-off where like you're going to use your boost gauge either on EX's or defense or I'm cashing this [ __ ] out, you know? Exactly. So the way it ends up playing out is just like you described when you have your character and you're kind of deciding, you know, if you get a hit now, I can catch up by using my boot, but that also leaves me kind of defenseless. I don't have access to a road track anymore or quick block or assist breaker anymore. So, you kind of have to really decide is it offense or defense I'm going to be spending this boost gauge on.
That's neat. That's such a cool That's such a different tradeoff than it was before when it felt like mega situational. Uh like if you get this stage transition or something like that, you know. Uh and Allan gets the same thing, right? Oh, yeah. Every character will be able to do a heavy loop like that. Uh if they have a air boost cancel, right? But like even right now like you're doing the heavies, but just try doing like light medium heavy or just medium heavy boot that cancel and you'll see that you can do more. It goes down so much.
Yeah, it's a ton. So you have a ton more combo meter to work with here. Still do specials in the air. You can still do specials in the air. And then I can just like go for any of my launchers. Yep. And you can also call in your assist during all this to blow your brain even more, you know. Thank you. Oh, you know. Oh, on man. I did the wrong one. I need that in the back. It it it definitely takes a while to land this up and get all the combo down. So, I I see what you're talking about.
Like there's the special move limiter that kicks in where it's like unless I do here's a normal special. Let's repeat it. I have to use an EX here. To to actually extend it even more. Exactly. Wow. So optimized combos are going to get really interesting because it all depends on what starter you have and how much like combo gauge you have to work with. Exactly. And so like you know also you know going back to like the KI routs where you had the openers into normal right where you can do like you know heavy into special or special into heavy etc.
Uh now for some characters if you say you're conquest good example here right you can't do boot cancel on the ground. So if you hit something like say heavy into course go forward into heavy again like that right? Like if you go back to normals after that, you can't boost dash cancel. It's kind of the end of it. I'll let you do this part myself. But if you launch it heavy afterwards, then you can start doing the boost dash cancel and lower that combo meter in the air. Wow, dude. Okay, so I am actively manipulating uh the the combo gauge now in a reverse direction.
Like there's there was some modifiers like this generic assist will pop it down a little bit, but now I'm like actively bringing the gauge lower um as a result of using boost gauge. So I love that. I love that like boost is the most unique mechanic in this game and it's the most fun. It's also like the most important thing next to your life bar. Um so it's really cool how many things are in there and there's like another offensive utility for it now. I like that a lot. Exactly. The boost gauge it recovers very slowly, right?
So that kind of incentivizes the tagging. So when you're tagged out, you boost gain covers way faster. So managing what characters in and out and all that is like a big deal in this game in terms of, you know, being competitive and optimizing. I'm ready. I think I'm ready to play. Yeah, I think I'm ready. There's so many things that are in my head now of like what I can do that is different than before. All right, let me boot up. Let me back out to the main menu. Yeah, chat, as a heads up, the beta is going live in like jeez, a little over a week.
TV. I think it's like next Thursday, next Friday or so. Um, April 9th. It's not a It's not a closed beta. It is not a sign up beta. It's just going to be on PlayStation. So, it's like Yeah, we do not have to have a uh like a specific account or something like that. We just have to be online on PlayStation and it will be working. Very cool. There you go. It is medium and assist one. Okay. That's the one. Y. Very cool. All right. Good. This has changed many times, so I'm always like, where is this now? And I think we also the window so it's harder to break those in general now. So before they were much easier to break sort of like a second throw break I would call it, right? And the way we found a way around it before was off of you had to you had to do ex um fireball and it caused enough hit stun where it would you could combo into it. There are clear weaknesses to to some of this stuff and like why you're going to use it. The biggest thing that I'm realizing that is like important to getting used to is that man, you have to swap characters out constantly. you just do. Uh the boost gauge is so important.
Like breakers are so important, but they all have like counters and rewards. So balancing all of that is like very similar to a KI situation where it's like my brain is going through a lot right now, but it's I'm having a good time because like even though I'm not good at it yet, it does feel good to be like I want I can beat this with that. I know I can beat this with that. I can try this. You know, there's a lot of like options this time. Yeah. You're it's one of those games where you have to be constantly engaged.
Like you can't your brain never could really turn off. Like I broke that there. I had to focus the whole time get you auto get wrecked. Now I lost anytime you do assist you lose a lot of red health. And Omniman man's like the exact same way where it's like, yeah, I started to get familiar with him and with the right assist, he feels good, but it takes some time. Like he doesn't just immediately start like vibing and jelling. You got to figure him out. Which is why like everybody should play Mark because Mark like Mark fits on any team. Like he feels like he can either be angabunga or defensive or just go nuts, you know? Yeah, for sure. That sounds like a really good description actually. I think you're spot on. So uh all these changes like it's a completely different game like I know some things are looking familiar but no no kidding like so much of this stuff is completely like alien to me of like how it's operating and how it's working now. I need to start playing the game with that in mind because my I've never even thought of doing that in Invincible Versus ever. Man, I want to play more. I got to figure out a team. I got to like legit figure out a team that I want to rock with. Omnan's going to be on almost every team I pick, I think. But man, there are so many more options now because of the mobility.
There are so much like it feels like there was even more stuff that was added from the previous build I played with John. Dude, I I'm going have to have time just to sit with this. I have to play this a lot. I just want it to come out so I can play like people. I that's the thing I have not really done a lot of invincible is actually play against people like over the years that we've been testing and messing with stuff. It's always been like these mechanical functional things, you know? So, definitely need to mess with the new alt timing and combos.
Whole bunch of new options. Sick. Sick. Yeah, Omniman combos were pretty straightforward before. He was a little like linear. I'm very curious how that changed. I'm very curious. Heat. Heat.
