Nintendo's out here with the most hidden Nintendo Direct, dude. 10 minutes before the Nintendo Direct drops. They're like, "Hey, we have a Star Fox Direct happening in 10 minutes." And it's like, I missed that completely. Uh cuz I was just doing things and then I went upstairs and I checked on an upload on YouTube and I saw that Nintendo was live and I was like, "What?" And then I caught the very tail end of it and then I saw some wild Vtuber stuff and I was like, what am I look what? All right, I just got to wait. So I'm like, let me just let me just watch this later. Um, and then Twitter was just blowing up. And then I started retweeting stuff because yeah, as we understand it now, they're pretty much remaking Star Fox 64 for the fourth time. Um, which is a choice. And the character designs are crazy. They're a lot different. Uh, third. Oh, I I beg to differ. Hold on. So, let's let's talk about that. Star Fox. Okay. Star Fox 64 has made a third time. You're right. Star Fox. Star Fox 64 is practically a remake of Star Fox. It's all about the Lilacot Wars. It's all about Andros, you know, and his invasion on uh Corneria, right? So, that's Star Fox. So, they do that again in Star Fox 64. It's like the same thing. And then after that, the events go to a couple of different games, right? And then we get to Star Fox 64 3D, which was an actual just like remake. And then which is which is legit just the exact same game. And then they have Star Fox Zero, which is like, okay, yeah, Star Fox, so this is going to be all different, right? And then it opens with the Lilac Wars. I from what I remember, it opens with like the Lilac Wars, and you're literally on the assault on Corneria again. and and Ad Andros is the big bad guy. And I'm like, so this is the fifth time we've done this. And they are becoming exceedingly efficient at it. Um, so anyway, it's it's technically the fourth remake of Star Fox, which is wild. Absolutely wild. Uh, I asked Jessica like, "Does the DS version like that?" She's like, "No, it's got it's more unique than that." Um, so anyway, without passing mega judgment, I haven't seen a lot of gameplay and stuff like that. I think my initial shock of it just being Star Fox 64 again doesn't give me the most immediate like, woo, like, dude, that game still plays really good, you know? Like, if anything, I would like to see what in 2026 we could do with like a rail shooter. How do we push rail shooters beyond, you know? And it seems like, nah, we perfected this [ __ ] We perfected this [ __ ] back in like 1996 or something like that. Got to keep doing it. Um anyway, let's fire up the entire thing. I want to check this thing out. Don't fix what's not broken. Yeah. And again, Star Fox fans are going to buy it and eat it up because whenever again, I love Star Fox 64. It's actually my favorite N64 like game as as just like a singular game that came out right on N64. loved it the moment it came out. The rumbling controller, all that [ __ ] I just it was a great time. And I was also a massive fan of uh of rail shooters. I just really dug rail shooters at that time. Panzer Draon, Star Fox, they were just like right next to each other. So to me, it's like I dig this game, but it still plays really good, you know? This looks really similar to, and we just played it not that long ago. Uh what was it? Star Fox Assault. What was the one on I always get confused the one on DS and the one on GameCube. Was that Assault? Was the Sar Fox? Not Zero. No, Assault is the Gamecube one. Yeah, they have like the super Bandai Namco like techno ships and stuff like that. It's like close to like Gundam looking stuff. Um, it looks like that. It It has like a very similar sort of like design to it or launch bombs that cover a wide area. The Rwing can break boost and barrel roll and barrel roll to repel enemy fire. Did you do anything else? And even somersault. Oh, it is the same. It is the same besides the R1. Wow. I mean, it looks great. Holy [ __ ] Called the Landmaster. It does look really good. It is Star Fox 64 again, but it looks really good. And a modified exploratory submersible called the blue marine can also be a level that depending on not frequently received on at least the first few runs in Star Fox 64. The campaign will take you to diverse planets as you seek out the enemy's stronghold to restore peace in the lilac system. Corneria is a planet teeming with life and the beating heart of the system. Wow. That's that that area. Wow. H looks crazy covered in ice and snow. All right, this this one this has gotten definitely a big upgrade. Solar is the lilac system scorching hot second star. This is a much better realization of the old one. This is also mad cool. Holy hell. Ocean planet that was stripped of all its natural resources. Pull your cat. There's also it is the same things you do though. It certainly is still laser tech. And the inside of a nebula from planet surfaces to outer space. A variety of stages await. With free flying dog fights in all range modes, don't let anything through and massive boss battles. You can look forward to intense aerial combat. Holy [ __ ] that looks cra that looks it looks amazing. It's crazy because we've done this a billion times. Like Star Fox 64 was already an insanely like replayable game. So you've just like played out those levels a billion times and then they would come out with like game after game after game that were doing the same thing again and again and again and again and again and now we're just doing it again and again. It's like I think I I think for me it would just be so sick if we had a again Star Fox 64 is great, but I think it would be so sick if we had a modern interpretation of what a rail gun shooter could be. It's great that they don't want to switch the formula cuz Star Fox 64 is just one of the best rail shooters ever, but not trying something new with it outside of visuals like anything. It's like it, dude. This is the the exact same games, man. Depending on the objectives you complete, the number of enemies shot down, and other factors. I wonder if they're going to show Falco going into the waterfall, which has been happening for the past 30 years. Stages with a different approach to find ways through that are Bro, I haven't watched this, brother. Brother, I haven't watched this. I saw the end, brother. the pre-watched legit pre-watched. You'd better be right about dude. That's the second thing because we've been looking at this [ __ ] We've been legit looking at this [ __ ] forever. Scenes have also been added. These include never-before-seen mission briefings between stages, allowing you to learn more about the characters and the Star Fox. Falco's chicken legs. Fall in team. How are we doing? You can choose between easy, normal, and expert difficulty settings. When playing on easy difficulty, your shield gauge will be actual difficulty isn't baked into the levels, making it ideal for novice pilots. Challenge mode. You can replay stages you've already cleared. Complete a variety of objectives that Yeah, they have so they have to they have to fill this out in some way because like Star Fox 64, like even if you want to see all of the levels, if you know how to get to them all, it's like less than two hours, dude. Like a run in Star Fox is like borderline 15 to 20 minutes. It is not a super long game. And if if you run through the game just like on first playthrough, you can do I don't know, you can get like within 20 minutes a first playthrough done. It's not super hard either. And then if you do the other levels, which can be varying levels of challenge of like unlocking them and then maybe dying in some of the harder levels because they are path locked, you know, 15 to 20. No, man. You haven't played Star Fox 64? Like we we did we just we dude we just did this on Yo Video Games. We just did this and we were like, "Yeah, let's just see all all of the levels and it was under like 2 hours." If you don't know where to go, you would just be repeating levels. Don't get me wrong. New challenges to each mission that you won't Oh, it's cheaper. It's 50. Okay. Okay. You never played it? Okay. Yeah. It's not a super long game. It's about like replayability and getting better scores and finding how to kill every enemy. How do you unlock, you know, the accomplish of every single level? Take on these now. They're baking in all these normal or expert difficulty. All these additional challenges. Battle mode puts you in four versus four dog fights. Players are split between team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf. Then compete to earn the most points by clearing missions and taking down foes. You can select from three stages, each with its own rule set. Is there no like co-op thing? Is it only versus domination opponents and seize control of the zone around the satellite towers on Corneria. Damn, that DLSS kicking in. Star Fox completed the objective. I think one of the things that I was looking forward to the most when we were talking about a possible Star Fox game in the future was like, dude, how cool would it be to go through levels of Star Fox with four player co-op where everybody takes a character, you know, where we all like work together and do cool ship team up stuff with each other and stuff like that. Like that's what we were all hoping. We were we have we have been we were saying that like over a month ago. Um, and I don't think this is going to have any co-op. It's Star Fox 64, dude. They're not going to they're not going to render this from different character perspectives. Collect as many energy crystals as you can while dodging meteor or retrieve cargo from space pirates and take it to your base in sector Y. These are big old range mode missions. You can create private matches with your friends online or match up with random players from around the world, making for a variety of ways to join team battles. Plus, it kind of I'm kind of bugged that it's all range mode. The old range missions were my least favorite missions in Star Fox 64. They're not bad, but they're not as fun as the other ones. in game share via game chat. By holding your Joy-Con 2 controller like a mouse, you can seamlessly swap to mouse controlled targeting for intuitive aiming and steering. Wow, Slippy, stay in form. Cool. Okay, now you've done it, Slippy. Bogey on your tail. By sharing one of the Joycon 2 controllers with a second player, you can split pilot and gunner duties in co-op. We're entering. It's probably going to play exactly the same. Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The Star Fox series has had a long legacy on Nintendo platforms. Along that journey, it set out for adventure. If you've never experienced the series before, we hope you'll give Star Fox a try. I think they've done a very good job with scale, right? If there was one thing even the old N64 game did well, it gave you a sense of like you're in something very epic, right? Like the the space around you, how it's rendering things in, like it it did a very good job at making all of that feel like super impactful. If there was one thing that was like missing I remember from some of the Rwing missions uh in Star Fox Assault, the regular Rwing missions in Star Fox Assault and also Star Fox Adventure when you play as the ship levels in those, they're like these are okay, but they don't hit the same way that like Star Fox 64 does. And to in my opinion, even like games like Panza Dragon 1 and two on Sega Saturn, they feel smaller. Yeah. Things just feel like slightly off. like that they're not tuned to the ways that they have historically worked before. So, I kind of understand that like they've gotten criticism on that in the past with previous games that are all Rwing games or have Rwing missions and now they're like, "All right, so let's just copy the old [ __ ] you know. Finally, we'll finish this presentation by sharing the game's prologue, which depicts a past battle involving James Mloud, father of the protagonist Fox." Bro, they are really making them look like the puppets. I think that's the interpretation, right? The old SNES cover puppets. Is that what they're going for? These proportions are something. That that enhances the experience a little bit, you know? that actually makes it better that you here's here's things that you can do that were not available in the original game. You know, I think that's actually mad cool if that is the case. Adding just like little bits of things here and there that flesh out the experience a little more. I really hope so. If it's a cut scene, it's like, okay, so we're just doing Star Fox 64 with cutscenes. Um, pricing it's 50 bucks. Yes, I'm very red. pricing. It's 50 bucks. Uh I I think it looks great. Whoever they got, do we know the actual developer or is it just presumed? I think whatever we're looking at, whoever the hell made it did a really damn good job at recreating some of the things that were missing from some of the other Star Fox Rwing games. Um which was that sense of scale and how everything like feels definitely a bit better. It's unfortunate that it is just the same exact gameplay things that we have seen time and time and time and time and time again. But I think the whole point of this, the character designs are something. I think the whole point of this is to try to reintroduce Star Fox to like a new audience. And they just are deathly afraid of trying anything like really new. Like they're just deathly afraid of it, man. It's been this way for a long time. like upwards of when was the 3DS remake? It's been a long time. So, h I hope it does well. I just hope it does well so that we eventually get a big grand like Star Fox game, like a really like a really big one. It's been like 15 years, you know? It's been 10 years since Star Fox Zero, but like this started happening around technically like Star Fox 3DS. Um, of course I'm going to buy it. No, I'm I'm actually looking forward to it. Star Fox 64 is amazing, but you can play this right now, right? Like Sans's cutscenes, you can play this right now and it still plays great. Like if you have an N64, it plays great on an N64. And then the Star Fox that's on Nintendo uh the Nintendo eShop, NSO, whatever it is, plays pretty good. It's pretty close. Let me see. Yeah, hold on a second. Let me do a comparison. Um, it feels like it could be a stepping stone to a grander Star Fox adventure. Yeah, but people have been saying that's in Star Fox Zero, dude. And I still think this this has very 90sish charm. Right. I think the biggest difference is that this this feels like by every definition Star Wars AF and not Phantom Menace Star Wars. Um, either way, I'm not blown away. I feel like the initial disappointment of it being a Star Fox 64 again is always going to be there. I I kind of just wanted something new. I just kind of wanted like what could you do with a rail shooter with modern technology and modern game design? Like how could we how could we make this crazy? And in my head, we already came up with like a few ideas of how you could do that with even four players in a in sort of like a game logic that keeps you engaged with each other and on the same rail and path where it's like, yeah, that'd be possible. You definitely could make something pretty crazy, especially like a co-op game where you team up with everybody else instead of just saving them at all times. Um, but it it feels like Miyamoto and the people that are behind Star Fox just do not want to move past the Lilac Wars, if not the Corneria Assault, because Star Fox 64 is too good. It's just too good. It's just too good. Nintendo doesn't want to take any more risks. I feel like it would if if they do enhance it a little bit and have moments where you can play as James or do these other things like in between. That could be cool. Uh functionally the game plays out like a the bug game. What the [ __ ] is it, dude? Uh what the hell's the bug games? EDF. Yeah, it plays out like an EDF and very like funny stuff, you find a lot of bugs, too. It's very similar to like Earth Defense Force and you upgrade and you get new things and there's like this whole crazy [ __ ] It It reminded me of like this is what Earth Defense Force is like. And when you eventually get to the Rwing areas, which I think were weaker than even the ground missions, I thought the ground missions were actually more interesting. Um, at least to me. at least to me. So, I don't know. And then and then Star Fox Zero just like let's just take all the stuff that you like about Star Fox 64 and make it annoying. So, I don't know. I feel like there's just never been an opportunity to really lean into the the side of just it being a rail shooter and being comfortable with it being a rail shooter, right? And not wanting to deviate and do all this like other crazy [ __ ] to turn it into something else. Star Fox Assault did the same thing where it's just like here's an arena and you pretty much kill a bunch of dudes and and complete objectives in an arena. they just didn't feel as good. It was it was interesting. It was a bit different, but it didn't feel as good. So, to me, it was like, what if we just leaned into it being a really, really, really sick rail shooter? And I'm glad that they're doing it with this. It still is that, but it's like very It is It is the one of the better rail shooters ever, you know, like Ace Combat. No, Ace Combat. I I mean I haven't played a lot of Ace Combats, but Ace Combats aren't rail shooters. If you're looking for a jet style rail shooter, that would be Afterburner. And you to a to a degree Afterburner climax, you know? Um Ace Combat by definition is all range, right? Like you are you are in an you are in an area and you're engaging with the enemy with like a free and open environment. Rail shooters are you're literally on rails. You can go faster, you can go slower, but you can't deviate that much from what you have in that in that area. Anyway, very different. Like all the hype they made around the mouse and multiplayer are going to be testing bed for gimmicks. Uh like Star Fox usually is. Well, they're already doing the mouse with a bunch of stuff. So now I don't know. I don't know. You're in a fish tank on a roller coaster pretty much, you know. Damn, it looks pretty though. I tell you what, it looks really goddamn pretty. I like I like it that the Switch is getting games that look good. Let's rock and roll. Like it's it's You know what? You know what? I will give this credit. I had never seen this before it being on a Switch 2 ever and now I have. Everything that we usually see on Switch 2 is a presentation of something that you saw on something else and now it runs just on Switch 2. So it's like cool, that's crazy that it runs on a Switch 2. That's really cool. But I'm not given anything new. Like you've never seen this before and the Switch 2 is producing these visuals. Yeah, Bonanza is pretty much a good example of that where Donkey Kong was like, "Wow, look at all this crazy particle stuff they're doing. This is this is nuts." So, I think it's great that I did not know what a modern day Star Fox could look like and now it's only the Switch 2 that's able to produce that. I think that's cool. That's why this is surprising when you see this. Like, damn. Whoa. game in action while stage layouts have been kept. Dude, I wish they did [ __ ] where it's like, hey, here's four times the enemies, you know? That would be cool. That would be cool because we've played this [ __ ] 800 times. And as someone that has been around Simmons to be exposed to Monolithoft stuff a lot, they're really good at scale. They're really good at as as a support development studio with their environments and [ __ ] They're very good at that. So, what I'm what I'm also noticing is that in Monolith Soft games, even on Switch One, I was looking at how they're like rendering their environments and stuff, and it's like, dude, I barely ever see popping in these games, like they've done something to really ease the the the different the differentiating values of level of quality, level of detail as you get closer and closer to stuff. And I'm like, dude, I barely saw the transition. Like, I have to really pay attention. When I start looking at this, I see the same thing. Like I don't really see the level of detail like kick in in a way that's like super obvious. It just looks really smooth. And it's a Switch, too. It's like much less technologically capable than other modern hardware and I I can't see it, dude. Like every It's super subtle. It just looks mad good. We need your help, Star Fox. Do you prefer this kind of remake for Bloodborne if it were to happen? Dude, even if even if we got a Bloodborne remake, we don't want that [ __ ] to be one to one.
