MAX REACTS: Star Fox Direct
Chapters7
Hosts discuss the sudden Star Fox news and their initial reactions to a potential remake and what it could mean for the series.
Maximilian Dood reacts to Nintendo’s Star Fox Direct, praising the visuals and scale while arguing the remake sticks to Star Fox 64’s rail-shooter core—wishing for bolder, more modern twists.
Summary
Maximilian Dood dives into Nintendo’s surprise Star Fox Direct, delivering a candid, veteran gamer take on the Star Fox 64 remake. He acknowledges the bold character redesigns and a striking, Star Wars-esque opening that instantly sets a cinematic tone. While impressed by the upgraded visuals, scale, and the faithful recreation of classic Arwing action, he argues the core gameplay remains the same rail shooter formula from Star Fox 64 rather than offering a new modern interpretation. He highlights practical details like DLSS-like enhancements, all-range mode, and the option to play with a Nintendo 64 controller, while noting the absence of cooperative campaign concepts in favor of four-versus-four and private online matches. Maximilian also expresses mixed feelings about the character designs, joking about Falco’s legs and Slippy’s look, yet he praises the lighting, stage variety (Corneria, Zoness, Solar, Nebula), and the potential for a co-op experience via shared Joy-Con. He envisions exciting possibilities for a future, more ambitious rail shooter and suggests the series could benefit from a larger, more innovative standalone title beyond another Star Fox 64 reimagining. There’s a playful but pointed critique of the VTuber integration and the overall decision to repackage an already beloved classic instead of pushing into new gameplay territory. He closes by weighing the price point and the realism of a Switch 2 launch, while reaffirming his intent to buy and his ongoing hope for a truly next-gen Star Fox experience someday.
Key Takeaways

- Some fans, including Maximilian, crave a bolder reinvention beyond Star Fox 64’s mechanics, wondering how a modern rail shooter could push the genre forward.
- The Star Fox direct includes a prologue sequence featuring James McCloud, potentially playable or deeply cinematic, to deepen the Star Fox lore.

and other factors. I wonder if they're going to show Falco going into the waterfall, which has been happening for the past 30 years. Bro, I haven't watched this. Bro, brother, I haven't watched this. I saw the end. Nintendo's out here with the most hidden Nintendo Direct, dude. 10 minutes before the Nintendo Direct drops, they're like, "Hey, we have a Star Fox Direct happening in 10 minutes." And it's like, "I missed that completely." Uh cuz I was just doing things, and then I went upstairs and I checked on an upload on YouTube, and I saw that Nintendo was live, and I was like, "What?" And then I caught the very tail end of it.
And then I saw some wild VTuber stuff, and I was like, "What am I look What?" All right, I just got to wait. So, I'm like, "Let me just Let me just watch this later." Um and then Twitter was just blowing up, and then I started retweeting stuff because, yeah, as we understand it now, they're pretty much remaking Star Fox 64 for the fourth time, um which is a choice. And the character designs are crazy. They're a lot different. Without passing mega judgment, I haven't seen a lot of gameplay and stuff like that. But I think my initial shock of it just being Star Fox 64 again doesn't give me the MOST IMMEDIATE LIKE, "WHOA!" If anything, I would like to see what in 2026 we could do with like a rail shooter.
How do we push rail shooters beyond, you know? And it seems like now we perfected this [ __ ] [laughter] We perfected this [ __ ] back in like 1996 or something like that. Got to keep doing it. Yeah, and again, Star Fox fans are going to buy it and eat it up because whenever Again, I love Star Fox 64. It's actually my favorite N64 like game as as just like a singular game. Game that came out right on N64. Loved it the moment it came out. The rumbling controller, all that [ __ ] I just It was a great time.
And I was also a massive fan of uh of rail shooters. I just really dug rail shooters at that time. Panzer Dragoon, Starfox, they were just like right next to each other. Let's do it. What is Miyamoto going to put in front of my face? He's definitely going to talk about the movie. I'm Shigeru Miyamoto. Last month, we released the Super Mario Galaxy movie, which was enjoyed by many people around the world. To everyone who saw it in theaters, thank you very much. The movie features a certain character who is a part of the Super Mario series.
It is a part of the Super Mario series. Why is uh oh? No, no, no, let's not do movie footage. No, no, no, we saw the movie. Hold on. Return in their own Nintendo Switch two games. Right. This game is called Starfox. You know what? It is the epitome It is the epitome of modern logo design. Like Starfox as NES. I'm sorry, I'm going to be pausing this every once in a while. It is the epitome of classic logo design, you know? Where you have this really cool logo and we're just going to minimalize the [ __ ] out of it.
I really dug the old Starfox like orange on purple and blues and stuff like that. I thought it was cool. I thought it was cool, but I I get it. I think it's clean. You know what? I still think it's clean. And now, I'll pass it over to Koizumi-san. Hello, everyone. I'm Yoshiaki Koizumi. From here on, I will be your just say it's THE SAME? WHOA! WHOA! DID I JUST LOOK AT THE YOUTUBE CHAT and y'all saw that Starfox logo right here? And you saw this? And you just said it's the same thing? Are we being serious?
Are you I mean if you're deaf, I completely understand. I get it. If you if if you're either like color blind completely or deaf, it's cool. Then then yeah, it's actually pretty similar. It's actually very similar. You're right. Star Fox is based on the Nintendo 64 game Star Fox 64, but the visuals have been completely updated. All of the characters in the game have also been redesigned. All right. Let's take a look. I saw the VTuber thing. Let me see this. Wow. Bro, this is opening like Star Wars. This is kind OF AMAZING. WOW, THIS IS KIND of amazing.
Atmospheric entry complete. Extend the wings. They're going back to basics. They're doing what Tekken 8 always should have done. G diffuser systems check. Sound off team. Slippy here. So far, so good. This is Peppy. All systems go. Peppy looks cool. Falco here. G diffuser seems fine. Falco looks okay until you see his legs, which I got spoiled [music] on. Enemy targets up ahead. Let's rock and roll. What you're seeing is footage of the game in action. While stage layouts have been kept the the the visuals have received a major upgrade. And I do I do think like what they're getting right here, which is the thing that which is the thing that the Panzer Dragoon remake sort of miss a little bit, uh is scale.
It actually has really good scale. I like it a lot. Slippy, stay in formation. Banter between characters is also back. Now you've done it, Slippy. Bogey on your Big environments, you know? Cover me while I find you on my sensors. Oh, you got him? Well, thanks, Fox. Man, it is just Star Fox 64. Wow. Hey there, General. There's got to be new stuff. This cutscene As it happens, my team's in This is Fox McCloud, leader of Okay. the Star Fox mercenary squad. Prep the Arwings. We've got a job to do, Star Fox. We're going to take the system back from Andross, one planet at a time.
Falco Lombardi is their ace pilot and [music] Fox's rivals. Sounds perfect. There's no way Andross would expect us to launch an Bro, he looks like a parrot. I mean, I guess he was always a parrot, but now I'm like really noticing it. He's like a It's like a bird that goes in a bird cage. There. You up for another challenge, Fox? Scans are showing unidentified energy [music] emanating from within Slippy Toad is the team's engineer extraordinaire. So, I think it was Dodo or somebody on Twitter said, "Bro, can we take the DLSS 5?" "Can we take the DLSS 5 filter off of Slippy?" I don't know.
I was like, "Oh god." Oh [laughter] god. This greasy lizard. [clears throat] Frog. Is a frog. A barrel roll. Is a toad. Do you realize how rare it is to experience a stable warp channel? Did you see the distortions? That base is the gateway to the wider system, Fox. And Peppy Hare is their strategic mastermind. Bro, Starfox isn't spunky at all. He's like flat. Sorry, I'm pausing this a lot. He's so flat. Like, is he sad because his dad died or some [ __ ] He's so flat. Holy [ __ ] And veteran pilot gets into enemy space. Look at Look at the life in his eyes.
It's just sad. Not this [ __ ] again. Will this stupid rabbit shut the hell up? And mastermind and veteran pilot gets into enemy space. Just this. Hit them quick and hit them hard. Peppy looks cool. The fate of the Lylat with the rabbit. merely on their shoulders. We're doing this again. is a high-performance aerospace fighter piloted by Fox and his crew. They really didn't do any crazy redesigns to the Arwing. This looks really similar to and we just played it not that long ago. What was it? Starfox Assault? It looks like that. It It has like a very similar sort of like design to it.
Or launch bombs that cover a wide area. The Arwing can break, boost, and barrel roll and flip. to repel enemy fire. Can you do anything else? And even somersault. Oh, it is the same. It is the same. Besides the Arwing, Fox also has a ground vehicle called the Landmaster. It does look really good. It is Starfox 64 again, but it looks really good. modified exploratory submersible called the Blue Marine can also be levels that not not frequently received on at least the first few runs in Starfox 64. The campaign will take you to diverse planets as you seek out the enemy stronghold to restore peace in the Lylat system.
Corneria is a planet teeming with life and the beating heart of the system. Wow, that's that that area. Wow, Zoness looks crazy. Whoa. surface covered in ice and snow. All right, this this one this has gotten definitely a big Thanks, Fox. Wow, okay. Solar is the Lylat system's scorching hot second star. This is a much better realization of the old one. This is also mad cool. Holy hell. [music] Cool your jets, Kat. There's also the same things you do though. Certainly is. And the inside of a nebula. [music] From planet surfaces to outer space, a variety of stages await.
With free flying dog fights in all range mode. don't let anything through. Let's go. And massive boss battles. You can look forward to intense aerial combat. Holy [ __ ] that looks That looks looks amazing. go. It's crazy because we've done this a billion times. Like, Starfox 64 was already an insanely like replayable game, so you've just like played out those levels a billion times and then they would come out with like game after game after game that we're doing the same thing again and again and again and again and again and now we're just doing it again and again.
It's like I think [sighs] I I think for me, it would just be so sick if we had a Again, Starfox 64 is great, but I think it would be so sick if we had a modern interpretation of what a rail gun shooter could be. It's great that they don't want to switch the formula cuz Starfox 64 is just one of the best rail shooters ever. But, not trying something new with it outside of visuals like anything. It's like it Dude, this is the the exact same games, man. Depending on the objectives you complete, the number of [music] enemies shot down, and other factors.
I wonder if they're going to show Falco going into the waterfall, which has been happening for the past 30 years. with a different approach to find ways through that are optimal. Bro, I haven't watched this. Brother, I haven't watched this. I saw the end. The pre-watched. This is a legit pre-watched. You'd better be right about that. Dude, that's the second thing because we've We've been looking at this [ __ ] We've been legit looking at this [ __ ] forever. This looks fun. never-before-seen mission briefings between stages, allowing you to learn more about the characters and the Starfox team.
Falco's chicken legs. Fallen team, how we doing? You can [music] choose between easy, normal, and expert difficulty settings. When playing on easy difficulty, your shield gauge will be longer actual the difficulty is it baked into the levels? making it ideal for novice pilots. mode, you can replay stages you've already cleared. Complete a variety of objectives [music] that put Yeah, they have to They have to They have to fill this out in some way because like Starfox 64 like even if you want to see all of the levels, if you know how to get to them all, it's like less than 2 hours, dude.
Like a run in Star Fox is like borderline 15 to 20 minutes. It is not a super long game. And if you run through the game just like on first play through, you can do I don't know. You can get like within 20 minutes a first play through done. It's not super hard either. And then if you do the other levels, which can be varying levels of challenge of like unlocking them and then maybe dying in some of the harder levels because they are path locked. If you don't know where to go, you just would be repeating levels.
Don't get me wrong. New challenges to each mission that you won't find anywhere cheaper. It's 50. Okay, okay. You never played it. Okay. Yeah, it's not a super long game. It's about like replayability. I'm getting better scores and finding how to kill every enemy and how do you unlock, you know, the accomplish of every single level? Take on these challenges in normal or expert [music] all these additional challenges. Battle mode puts you in four versus four dog fights. Players are split between team Star Fox and team Star Wolf, then compete to earn the most points by clearing missions and taking down foes.
You can select from three stages, each with its own rule set. Is there no like co-op thing? Is it only versus? For domination? and seize control of the zone around the satellite towers on Corneria. Damn, that DLSS [music] kicking in. Star Fox completed the objective. I think one of the things that I was looking forward to the most when we were talking about a possible Star Fox game in the future was like, dude, how cool would it be to go through levels of Star Fox with four player co-op where everybody takes a character, you know, where we all like work together and do cool ship team up stuff with each other and stuff like that.
That's what we were all hoping. We were we have we have been we were saying that like over a month ago. And I don't think this is going to have any co-op. It's Star Fox 64, dude. They're not going to They're not going to render this from different character perspectives. Collect as many energy crystals as you can while dodging meteors and Things are weird, Janick. or retrieve cargo from space pirates and take it to your base in sector [music] Y. These are big all range mode missions. You can create private matches with your friends online or match up with random players from around the world, making for a variety of ways to join team battles.
Plus, It kind of I'm kind of bugged that it's all range mode cuz the all range missions were were my least favorite missions in Starfox 64. They're not bad, but they're not as fun as the other ones. By holding your Joy-Con 2 controller like a mouse, you can seamlessly swap to mouse controlled targeting for intuitive aiming and steering. Wow. Let me stay in formation. Cool. Okay. Now you've done it, Slippy. Bogey on your tail. By sharing [music] one of the Joy-Con 2 controllers with a second player, you can split pilot and gunner duties in co-op.
We're entering Corneria. What? You can do it in third person? Okay. Interesting. I'll try this with JJ because she loves Starfox She loves Starfox. Not even 64, just Starfox in general. Dude, even my wife who who like loves Starfox, when she found out she I I told her it's a Starfox 64 remake and she's like, "No." Even she was like, "No, we've already had those. Like again?" Even even her that is like not super into the gaming sphere like crazy, she was like, "Again? Wait, is it not a new game?" I'll target the lights on the left.
You got This looks mad. Wow, who What was that? Cat? What the [ __ ] It's a trap. These look [ __ ] amazing, dude. I love the lighting. Oh my god. A swarm of lowly flies. You're ready, team. We're approaching Venom. Oh, we're not going to get the old we're not going to get like, "Daddy Daddy squealed real good before he died." Like, we're not going to get THE "ARGH, ANDROSS! ARGH, I FAILED [groaning and screaming] YOU!" LIKE, all the "Cocky little freaks!" Damn, dude. Star Fox 64 is so quotable. They need to have DLC of you of you adding the old voice lines in.
Premier space. Racist Falco. Shh. Okay. Don't let them know. What did you think? As you just saw, Fox and company have a more animal-like design in this game. Nintendo Switch Reborn exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 system, Star Fox launches June 25th. Wow, that is soon. By the way, this game also supports How weird of it to just like you wouldn't save this for the Nintendo Direct that could be in the next month or so? Maybe they're trying to get ahead of leaks or something like that. Maybe they're Maybe they're trying to get ahead of this [ __ ] They don't give a [ __ ] I mean, it's it's a big This is a big Who's making this, by the way?
It's a big It's not even a No, it's not a small game. This is like a big This is a game. Like, this This doesn't look like Star Fox Zero looked, dude. Where it was just like very visually blah. Like, no, it actually has a visual identity, you know? Like, I think that some of the stages, especially, look better than even the characters. character avatars, which let you change your face appearance for your character. Like this. This is the VTuber [ __ ] that I saw. This is crazy. This almost makes me want to play this with your video games, but it doesn't just capture your head movement.
What are we going to play? It's like no, but your mouth Let's fight each other or something like that. blinks and your eyebrow movement as well. Look at that they're explaining this like we have no idea. We've never seen it before. Like this is new technology. Wow, look at that. No, dude, they have to have like the space behind them zooming by and [ __ ] When using character avatars to look like a Star Fox character. [gasps] Well, can you please hang up the call? I'm just trying to play Mario Galaxy here. Will, go to bed. Other games can also see He's like, "Do a barrel roll." [ __ ] Please go to bed.
LET'S ROCK AND ROLL. YOUR NEW look But this game also supports the Nintendo 64 controller. That makes sense. Those who played the Nintendo 64 version can enjoy controls that feel even closer to the original. It's probably going to play exactly the same. Nintendo Entertainment System. The Star Fox series has had a long legacy on Nintendo platforms. Along that journey, it set out for adventure. This still is not on Switch 2, is it? joined the battle in the Super Smash Bros. series. We're grateful that you've continued to support the series for more than 30 If you've never experienced the series before, we hope you'll give Star Fox a try.
I think they've done a very good job with scale. Right? If there was one thing even the old N64 game did well, it gave you a sense of like you're in something very epic, right? Like the the space around you, how it's rendering things in, like it it did a very good job of making all of that feel like super impactful. If there was one thing that was like missing I remember from some of the Arwing missions uh in Starfox Assault, the regular Arwing missions in Starfox Assault and also Starfox Adventure, when you play as the ship levels in those, they're like these are okay, but they don't hit the same way that like Starfox 64 does.
And to in my opinion even like games like Panzer Dragoon 1 and 2 on Sega Saturn, they feel smaller. Yeah, things just feel like slightly off. Like they're not tuned to the ways that they have historically worked before. So I kind of understand that like they've gotten criticism on that in the past with previous games that are all Arwing games or have Arwing missions. And now they're like, all right, so let's just copy the old [ __ ] you know. Finally, we'll finish this presentation by sharing the game's prologue, which depicts a past battle involving James McCloud, father of the protagonist Fox.
Bro, they are really making them look like the puppets. I think that's the interpretation, right? The old SNES cover puppets. Is that what they're going for? They look like big they they look like people in costumes. I have to go back and compare and contrast because I think like the I should look at the cover art for this. It looks identical to the old Starfox um like SNES cover art. past battle involving James McCloud, father of the protagonist Fox. Thank you very much. It's the stage of history. Dude, bro, the part that got me the most excited was like the opening, the very opening where it opens like Star Wars.
And I'm like are we leaning into this and actually it is just Star Fox 64 again. I'm like oh. The music though is Star Wars AF. this is Corneria Defense Force Headquarters. Do you read? Loud and clear. James McCloud here General. Star Fox is on approach to Venom. No indication of is alive? suspicious activity. Woah. We'll let you know what we find. Proceed. Wow, he looks cool as [ __ ] You're the first to set eyes on that place in years. And He's Fox's dad. James. For those that don't know. You're the only one I can trust.
General Pepper, do you read me? This isn't in the old game at all. Something's jamming long range comms. Stay sharp. Cool. We get to play this? this James? According to my instruments, the atmosphere is highly toxic. And we're doing this job for next to Nothing? We're supposed to be mercs. Peppy was a good guy? There's more at stake here than our bottom line Peppy. Yeah, sure. General Pepper says his people have detected signs of activity on Venom's surface. He's concerned it has something to do with Dr. Andross. It's been years since Andross was banished here James.
If the atmosphere is poisonous All the more reason to figure out what's going on. Dr. Andross made mistakes and he paid the price for them. But whatever else he is, he is a genius. Maybe he's done. survive. Our leader, such a bleeding heart. Where did they come from? Defensive formation. Peppy, where are you going? It's like you told me. I'm getting into You old two-timing swine. What can I say? My new boss pays better. Corneria These are cool scenes. must suffer. Death to all who stand in the way of my vengeance. Was that Dr. Andross?
No, don't let them escape. Do we get to play this? I really hope so. I hope it's not just a cutscene. I can't shake him. Hey Peppy, catch. James! Is that how he dies? Huh. He saves Peppy. Peppy, are you there? Come in, Peppy. Do you read me? I'm losing altitude. Peppy, you need [music] to get out of here. Warn the general. Not without you, James. That's an order. Peppy, keep an eye on Fox. Bro, I want to be able to play this. How sick would that be if you actually played out that sequence of him with the messed up [ __ ] missing messed up [ __ ] missing a wing as you're fighting just like a hundred of these dudes.
Like I really hope so. I really hope that's playable. Is that edited? That is edited. Oh my god, dude. I really hope that's not just a cutscene cuz that that to me is actually badass. That that enhances the experience a little bit, you know? That actually makes it better that you So, here's here's things that you can do that were not available in the original game, you know? I think that's actually mad cool if that is the case. Adding just like little bits of things here and there that flesh out the experience a little more.
I really hope so. If it's a cutscene, it's like, okay, so we're just doing Star Fox 64 with cutscenes. Pricing it's 50 bucks. Yes, I'm very red. I think it looks great. I whoever they got Do we know the actual developer or is it just presumed? I think whatever we're looking at, whoever the hell made it did a really damn good job at recreating some of the things that were missing from other some of the other Star Fox Arwing games. Um which was that sense of scale and how everything like feels definitely a bit better.
It's unfortunate that it is just the same exact gameplay things that we have seen time and time and time and time and time again. Welcome back But I think the whole point of this The character designs are something. I think the whole point of this is to try to reintroduce Star Fox to like a new audience. And they just are deathly afraid of trying anything like really new. Like they're just deathly afraid of it, man. It's been this way for a long time. Like upwards of When was the 3DS remake? It's been a long time.
I hope it does well. I just hope it does well so that we eventually get a big grand like Star Fox game. Like a really like a really big one. It's been like 15 years, you know? It's been 10 years since Star Fox Zero, but like this started happening around technically like Star Fox 3DS. Um Of course I'm going to buy it. No, I'm I'm actually looking forward to it. Star Fox 64 is amazing, but you can play this right now. Right, like sans cutscenes, you can play this right now. And it still plays great.
Like if you have an N64, it plays great on an N64. And then the Star Fox that's on Nintendo uh the Nintendo eShop NSO, whatever it is, plays pretty good. It's pretty close. Let me see. Yeah, hold on a second. Let me do a comparison. Uh so, here is right? And I still think these this has very '90s-ish charm, right? I think the biggest difference is that this this feels like by every definition Star Wars AF and not Phantom [clears throat] Menace Star Wars. It feels very much anthropomorphic animal Star Wars. And this and the character designs here are like Fantastic Mr.
Fox if not Dark Crystal. Looks like Jim Henson. Just like the interpretations of the characters and stuff. Granted, I don't think any of them have, you know, them have to cut off their legs because of gravity or some [ __ ] That old rumor. I feel like I will not be able to pull full conclusion until I see I see characters acting and emoting in the game more. Either way, I'm not blown away. I feel like the initial disappointment of it being a Star Fox 64 again is always going to be there. I I kind of just wanted something new.
I just kind of wanted like what could you do with a rail shooter with modern technology and modern game design? Like how could we how could we make this crazy? And in my head, we already came up with like a few ideas of how you could do that with even four players in a in sort of like a game logic that keeps you engaged with each other and on the same rail and path. Where it's like, yeah, that'd be possible. You definitely could make something pretty crazy, especially like a co-op game where you team up with everybody else instead of just saving them at all times.
But it it feels like Miyamoto and the people that are behind Star Fox just do not want to move past the Lylat Wars if not the Corneria Assault because Star Fox 64 is too good. It's just too good. It's just too good. What if Falco and Fox look like this in the next Smash game? If there is a new Smash game, they're going to look like this. They're going to look like this and you're going to like it. I I think I saw renders. Welcome back to the stage of history. That's a no for me, dude.
That's a no for me, dog. Uh his little feeties and his It looks like a guy in a costume on stilts. I think that's what they're going for. These proportions don't work in Smash. Nah, you have to deal with it. That's what you're going to get now. Zero issues. I deeply appreciate the Final Fantasy VII remake.
