Key Takeaways

  • The Vinyl Core 3 standing desk in hard walnut weighs so much it feels like a ‘tank’ and supports up to 160 kg with three memory presets.
  • Casters transform the desk into a movable workstation, allowing placements in front of the window or any corner of the room.
  • Studio Display XDR replaces a Pro Display XDR for brighter output (up to 2000 nits) and HDR-capable dimming zones, even if 27" at 5K is smaller than 32" 6K.
  • A2 Plus speakers from Audioengine are favored for desk use due to their compact size and surprisingly rich sound when directed with proper toe-in.
  • A Cow Digit TS5 Plus dock near the keyboard expands ports for the MacBook, simplifying quick connections.
  • Cable management leans on Velcro ties and ltstore magnetic arches to create a clean look without spending hours on perfect alignment.
  • The space balances work, filming, and gear storage with a dedicated filming desk, a separate work desk, and a white, clean aesthetic.

So, I just moved to a new house. And when I mean new, I mean completely new, which also means a completely blank slate. This is what this room looked like before. [music] And this is what it looks like now. And I needed a room that could not only have my desk set up, but I could also use for recording YouTube videos. We're currently on the top floor. So, this place is three floors. As soon as you come up to the top floor, there's like this landing area which I'm using as a sort of dumping ground for stuff. So, yeah, a lot of work in progress right now. Boxes and things, unpack unpacking stuff. The idea is that if I get any new products, they would go here and sit here and I can just sort of unbox them. And then the doorway. But before we get to the doorway, there's actually a big balcony out here. There's a balcony out here. There's a balcony out here. Sort of terrace balcony sort of area. And yeah, this sort of gives you an idea. We're on the top floor and there's three different floors. If we go back in here now into the main space. So, this space is 3 and 1/2 m this way and then 4 and 1/2 m this way. I want to make it look like a lab. Very white, clean, sterile looking place. I've also had these sound panels fitted to help reduce echo. This is just where I'm going to be recording the videos. This is just a sort of tinkering sort of desk. And then I'm going to have another desk over here. So, this will be the desk where I actually do work and edit the videos and whatever else. And then I have all this space to play around with for making videos. [music] So, let's get on to the desk setup. The aim of this desk setup is to have everything I need quickly available to me, but also in the cleanest way possible. I have the new Vinyl Core 3 standing desk in the hard walnut finish. And they're also sponsoring this video. It took me around an hour to put together, but the surprising thing about this desk [music] is the weight. Because it's made from real walnut, it's super heavy and rigid, built like an absolute tank. The size of this one is 180 cm x 75 cm. I usually try to go for the biggest desk I can, and it slots perfectly into this corner of the room. It is also a standing desk, and I found myself using the standing functionality a lot more because I'm in more of a sort of studio environment. There is of course a controller which has three different memory settings and it's designed to take up to 160 kg of weight which is just crazy. And Vernal have a bunch of info on their website showing all of the testing they do. I put casters on my desk which is one of the best things that I've done because now the desk isn't limited to one corner of the room. I can move it to wherever I like. I would highly recommend because now I'm not limited to my desk only being in this corner. If I wanted to, I can move it to any corner of this room. have it in front of the window as well if I want to. So, it's really nice having just everything on wheels. The desk also has an integrated drawer, which is really nice for hiding things away. It also comes with these perfectly sized felt organizers for organizing your things, which is a nice touch. I have the matching walnut desk shelf. This is the wider 120 cm version. It has a slide out shelf for tucking things away, but also giving you quick access to whatever you need. There's a built-in cable organizing tray, which is also nice to have. Basically, this is probably the most functional desk ever. It's perfectly designed to be as functional and productive a desk can be. Make sure to check out this desk. I'll leave a link to it down in the description below. And make sure to use my coupon code YT L6 for 6% off as well. When it comes to cable management, I actually saw this image of someone else's cable management and thought, what in the [music] Patrick Baitman is going on here? And I just knew I had to do something similar. However, I didn't have the patience of ironing out all of my cables and aligning them perfectly, but I got it as close as I could. I did it in a lot less time than I thought I would as well. It probably took me less than an hour. I used mostly Velcro cable ties and these metal magnetic arches from ltstore.com, making it look as clean as possible and hiding whatever I can. And I think I did a pretty good job. I was previously using the Pro Display XDR, but I have now fully switched to the new Studio Display XDR. Even though it's smaller at 27 in and 5K compared to 32 in and 6K, I switched for a few reasons. This gets much brighter. It goes up to 2,000 nits. There's also over 2,300 dimming zones, and of course, it can do 120 Hz. To be fair though, the refresh rate actually doesn't make too much of a difference for me because the only time I actually see the refresh rate is when animations happen on the screen or I'm scrolling. But other than that, I actually feel like when you're doing productivity work, it's nice having 120 Hz. Don't get me wrong, it looks smoother. But is it making me more productive? [music] Not really. It's just a nice to have for me. It's the brightness and the dimming zones that really make a big difference when it comes to editing stuff, working on stuff. the brightness, having that brightness, being able to work on stuff, and then having all those dimming zones so I can sort of do stuff in HDR. Even though obviously I don't make HDR videos, but when I am watching HDR videos, you get a proper HDR experience, which other monitors just can't come close to. I have my Studio Display XDR connected to my 14-in MacBook Pro, which sits on this native Union stand. This stand is super premium, made from metal, and has a ton of height and angle adjustment. Even though the Studio Display has speakers, a proper pair of speakers are always going to be better. I have the Audio Engine A2 Plus speakers in this setup. The more I use these speakers, the more satisfaction I feel like I get from them. They really are so good. They sound surprisingly good for such a small form factor. And I feel like for desk usage, they're ideal. I have found though with speakers like this, it's always important to have the sort of wedges so that they're angled towards your ears. I just found they sound sharper. They sound clearer when the speakers are actually properly directed towards your ears. Underneath the desk shelf, I have the Cow Digit TS5 Plus dock. My main use case for this is, of course, to extend the ports on my MacBook. It has an absolute ton of connectivity. I'll pretty much never run out of ports. It slots perfectly in this spot near where my keyboard and mouse is, making it easy for me to connect things quickly without having to reach over to my Mac or reach behind the monitor. To keep all of my devices charged, I have a Nomad charger, and it can charge my phone, my Apple Watch, and my AirPods all at once. It also has some nice weight to it, so it doesn't move around when I'm attaching or detaching my iPhone. I currently have one main desk light on this desk, which is the Logi Electra Beam LX. It acts as a sort of desk light as well as an accent light. I actually coded an app to automate and control the light from my Mac miniar. So, it automatically changes color temperature and brightness throughout the day. I also had this sort of generic accent LED lamp on the other side. It's brandless. It's just sort of one of those ones which you pick up from T-Mo or Amazon. It's okay. I can change the color temperature and stuff by tapping it. I'll probably replace it with something brighter at some point because I feel like it doesn't really get bright enough. I try to avoid using ceiling lights as much as possible. I found that lamps and accent lights and desk lights and stuff like that just makes such a big difference. Makes a place look a lot better. I have this leather tray from Monle acting as a sort of catchall. It's super nice and luxurious and I feel like matches the aesthetic quite well. On the left side wall above the desk, I have this magnetic pin board which I bought from Zara Home. I've been trying to get this pin board for weeks. It just constantly goes out of stock. Zara must only make like one a week or something because even now when you look for it, I can't find it in stock anymore. It feels super premium as well. It's just an iron board wrapped in oak. I just wish I had something like this earlier. It's a good way for me to just s have things at glance without having to open things up on my computer. Some of the stuff I have on there right now is just stuff that inspires me, pictures and graphics and things like that. Anything that I find interesting. And I just love how I can quickly switch things out whenever I want to as well. The chair that I have here, the one that I'm sitting in is the Human Scale Freedom Chair. This chair when you buy it at retail, goes for over $3,000, which I just think is crazy. Thankfully, I did not pay $3,000. I actually paid $400 for this chair. You can find chairs like this and Herman Miller chairs and other sort of brands on Facebook Marketplace and other sort of classified ad sort of websites for so much cheaper because businesses are sort of just giving them away. A lot of the time businesses are sort of moving or someone's moving or whatever and they need to get rid of office chairs and they just put them up on sort of like a Facebook marketplace or whatever and you can get these chairs for super super cheap. I usually recommend the Herman Miller Aeron which I still do recommend by the way. I actually have that chair in my gaming setup which is in another room. But for this new setup I wanted to try something different. This chair feels more premium in terms of materials because it's primarily made from leather and metal unlike the Aeron which is mostly made from plastic and mesh. However, I would say the Aeron is technically a better chair mainly because the Aeron has so much adjustability. There's so many different things that you can mess around with on the chair to get it perfect to you. This doesn't have as many options. What I do like about this chair though is the headrest. It's nice being able to have a headrest, being able to sit back and have my head supported. The Aeron obviously doesn't have that unless you buy an accessory. One other cool thing about this chair is the armrest. The armrests are connected so you can adjust them super quickly. You can adjust one and adjust the other as well. I find myself adjusting them a lot more because of how convenient it is. It's a very comfortable chair. I like it. I like the leather finish and stuff. I like the design of it as well. I feel like it looks like something that you'd find in Men in Black. And one other thing I like is the sort of seat itself is quite wide. So, if I wanted to, I can put my feet up like this and I can sit cross-legged as well, which I found myself doing a lot more purely because the seat is wider. So, now that I have most of the room ready, this is how I currently have it set up. So, desk is on the right, which you've just seen, and then I have this desk here as sort of like a work desk. And then I have this desk here as a filming desk. And then the window, camera setup, the light. Just to give you an idea of what the space is looking like right now. The great thing about this space is that I'm always going to be changing it. It's designed to be very flexible. It's designed for me to be able to make it whatever I want. Hence why I want to keep it white and clean. I've also had lots of questions about this stainless steel trolley that I have here. The stainless steel trolley is actually from IKEA. It's a kitchen trolley and I just have cameras and lenses and stuff on it right now. It's really nice having it cuz again it's on wheels as well just like pretty much everything else in this space. So yeah, really happy with this space so far. Happy with the way it's turned out and it's nice being able to have just one large room for everything. I'll leave links to everything that I can in the description below. Make sure to check out Vernal as well. Thanks to them for sponsoring this video.
