The speaker explains that a single compelling video idea can drive massive views even if the creator has no prior experience, highlighting the importance of finding the right idea before recording.

Strong video ideas trump editing or luck—use the icon method, a clear niche, and keyword research to land viral YouTube videos fast.

Summary

Shane Hummus lays out a practical, action-oriented blueprint for beginners to find viral YouTube ideas in 2026. He starts by insisting that ideas, not editing or cameras, are the single biggest predictor of success, citing his brother’s 800,000-view first upload as proof. The core framework hinges on a clear niche, then keyword discovery via vidIQ, followed by the icon method to vet potential topics. He demonstrates turning a niche hypothesis into searchable keywords like “high-paying skilled trades.” The icon method requires four signals: a video with at least 100,000 views, a channel under 100,000 subscribers, a views-to-subscribers ratio of 5:1, and a mediocre-to-bad thumbnail or video quality—an indicator that the idea itself is driving views. Shane shares a real-world success story where a similar idea outperformed bigger channels, resulting in rapid monetization (21 days to being monetized, a $214 day after 29 days). He also teases a live training and coaching opportunities, emphasizing speed (ideation to upload in under two hours) and scalability across niches. The video funneled viewers toward actionable steps: define a niche via a “niche hypothesis statement,” extract keywords with vidIQ, verify ideas with the icon method, and then execute with your best version of the concept. Finally, he hints at potential pitfalls and points viewers to further training and coaching options for personalized guidance.

Key Takeaways

  • Define a niche with a simple ‘who you help’ and ‘what you help them with’ statement (niche hypothesis) to move quickly from idea to video.
  • Use vidIQ to generate 10 keyword ideas from your niche hypothesis, then pick the most relevant one to search YouTube for ideas.
  • Apply the icon method on long-form YouTube results: 100k+ views, channel under 100k subs, 5:1 views-to-subscribers ratio, and a mediocre/bad thumbnail or video.
  • Three solid ideas are enough to start; extract 3+ viable topics, then choose the one you’re most excited to execute.
  • Case study insight: a video titled around ‘highest paying trades jobs no one’s talking about’ can outscore larger channels (39:1 ratio example) and spark rapid monetization.
  • The fastest path to momentum can be under 2 hours from ideation to upload, with rapid monetization possible in weeks (e.g., 21 days to monetization).
  • You can extend or deepen the approach with live training or one-on-one coaching if you want hands-on help at scale.

My 50-year-old brother who had never made a YouTube video in his life got over 800,000 views on his very first upload, and it was because of the video idea, right? It wasn't luck, it wasn't the algorithm gods smiling on him, it wasn't he just had a great personality, it wasn't the quality of his video, it was because we found him the right video idea before he ever hit record or uploaded the video itself. So, it was before the camera, before the script, before anything. And here's what no one in 2026 is telling you. The number one reason that beginner YouTubers fail has nothing to do with editing, talking on camera, thumbnails, or equipment. It's the idea of the videos. If you have a strong idea, your video can look like garbage. You can sound nervous. You can be really terrible at presenting. Your editing can be bad. And you can still get hundreds of thousands or even millions of views. And you've probably seen this many times. Videos that are excellent, and yet they completely bomb. And then videos that were objectively bad with either no editing or bad editing, a thumbnail that looks like it took about 13 seconds to create, and no YouTube skill whatsoever, getting hundreds of thousands or millions of views. So, you know what I'm saying is true. So, today I'm going to be handing you the exact process that we use to find those ideas. The same ones that I used to grow past a million subscribers and make $477,000 from AdSense just last year alone. And it works in any niche, at any subscriber count, in 2026. So, gently tap that like button if you appreciate me making these type of videos. You want me to make more of them in the future, and let's jump into it right now. Okay, so step one, and by the way, I'm going to go back and forth between the camera and my computer here. But, step one is to get your preliminary niche. Okay, so before you even get the video idea, you have to know, generally speaking, what you're talking about. And people call this a niche. Now, one thing I want to make clear here is this is not your final niche. This is just the starting point so that we can move fast. And the sooner we get this down, the sooner we can find real video ideas, and the sooner that you record your first video, the better. Specifically, recording your first video in this niche. So, here's all you need to figure it out. Two things. Who do you help, and what do you help them with? That's it. This is what I like to call a niche hypothesis statement. And let me show you how this works. So, I'm going to use my brother as an example. So, Zach had spent 30 years in the trades, and he has a lot of different skill sets, a lot of different things that he's good at, and a lot of the different things that he's passionate about, etc. And so, basically, we took an inventory of his skills, what he'd spend a lot of time doing. And basically, we came up with the idea that we want to make a channel helping people get into the skilled trades. So, for the who do you help, we're going to say burned out young professionals who hate corporate life. And for the what do you help them with, we're going to say transitioning into high-paid skilled trades without student debt. So, we're going to plug that into our AI tool to get the niche hypothesis statement dialed in. And by the way, if you want a specific prompt for finding this, here is a prompt. We'll go ahead and put it up on the screen. And you can actually discuss back and forth with the prompt in order to find this. So, yeah, we went ahead and did this with my brother, and there it is. So, that right there is your niche hypothesis statement. One sentence, super clear. You know who you're talking to, you know what problem you're solving, and you know what outcome you're promising. Now, we can use this to find the right keywords to search. All right, quick break. This week, I'm doing a one-time-only workshop where I talk about how to finally make money from youtube.com in 2026. And you can check it out down in the description and the pinned comment below. At this workshop, I'm going to be giving away the niche validator pro completely free. This is a GPT powered by a piece of software that I've been working on for a long time now, and it's been trained on thousands of hours of my teaching, coaching sessions, and more. So, you don't have to spend years to pick a profitable niche. You can do it in a matter of minutes. Heck, it's even possible to do it in seconds sometimes. And I'm going to be giving this away at the workshop. So, make sure you click the link in the description, and then show up to the workshop. And the best way to do that is to make sure you add it to your calendar once you've signed up for it. So, you basically just click add this to your calendar once you're on the thank you page after you've registered. And it'll show up as either Google, Apple, or Outlook calendar, whatever calendar you have. So, you can make sure you won't miss the chance to grab the niche validator pro completely free. And you'll also be able to ask me questions live. So, I look forward to meeting you. Can't wait to see you there. I'm going to be showing you this new opportunity. It's completely free, and it's amazing whether you basically want to use it to get a better job, use it to network, use it to make some passive income, start a side hustle, make a full-time income, or even start a full-on business. It works incredibly well with all of those, and it's completely free. So, make sure you click show up to the workshop. And now, back to your regularly scheduled content. All right, step two is getting your keywords. So, go to vidIQ. That's vidIQ.com. You can sign up for free. You don't need the paid version to do this, although the paid version is quite good, too. Once you're in, look for the AI chat on the left side, and then click new chat. Now, paste your niche hypothesis statement in there. And then type give me 10 keywords based on my niche hypothesis statement, and then hit enter. So, vidIQ is going to give you a solid list of keywords that your audience is actually searching for. Now, just pick the one that feels the most relevant to your niche. So, for Zach's channel, just as an example, I like high-paying skilled trades. Click on it, and vidIQ will pull up the data on that keyword, and then copy it. And that is the keyword that we are going to take into YouTube to find real video ideas. So, quick note on vidIQ's deep thinking feature. You only get five uses per month on the free version. So, don't waste them. Use regular chat for most searches, and then save the deep thinking for when you really need it. If for whatever reason you don't think these are enough, you can always paste a prompt like this into ChatGPT or Claude, and ask for more keywords. And of course, you would want to put your niche hypothesis statement in there as well. Okay, step three is to find your video ideas using the icon method. So, this is where it gets fun. You go to YouTube, and you paste your keyword into the search bar. You can start with the very first one. And before you look at anything, click filters and select videos. This removes shorts from the results. You only want long-form videos here. Now, here's the method I use to find the right ideas. I call it the icon method, and it has been my absolute cheat code, my absolute secret over the last 5 years growing my channel. And there are four things that you're looking for. Number one, the video has at least 100,000 views or more. Number two, the channel has less than 100,000 subscribers. Number three, the ratio of views to subscribers is at least 5:1. And number four, the video or thumbnail is either mediocre or bad. So, just as an example, if the video has 500,000 views, the channel cannot have any more than 100,000 subscribers. If the video has 250,000 views, you wouldn't want the channel to have any more than 50,000 subscribers, cuz again, the 5:1 ratio. Now, with the last part, the video or thumbnail is either mediocre or bad, why does that last one matter? Well, it's because if a bad video is getting massive views despite coming from a small channel that doesn't have a big audience, it means the idea is doing all of the work for the video. The audience was hungry for that content, right? So, the analogy here is let's say you start an amazing restaurant. It's like a Michelin star restaurant. But, you put it right outside of a buffet, the exit to a buffet. So, everyone walking outside of that exit already ate a bunch of food. They're not hungry. Well, nobody's going to eat your food. However, if you started a hot dog cart, and you put that hot dog cart in a place where there's a crowd of starving people, you're going to sell out of hot dogs every single time, even though hot dogs are not that good. Well, at least to most people they're not that good. You know, it's like mediocre food. So, it's the same thing when it comes to the ideas on YouTube. If you have the right idea, the video itself doesn't have to be that good, and it's still probably going to do very well. And that's what you want to do. That's your opportunity. You go ahead, and you make a better version of that video, better thumbnail, better title, better content, and you capture that same audience. So, for Zach's keyword, we found a few good ones. There's one called the top three trades with severe labor shortages in 2025. And we're going to go ahead and screenshot that, copy the link, and drop it in a Google Doc. There's another one. Highest paying trade jobs that nobody's talking about. 1.8 million views and 46,000 subscribers. That's a 39:1 ratio. That's an incredible find. So, screenshot it, copy the link, and add it to the doc. Now, go find a third one. You want at least three solid ideas before you move on. Once you have three, you're done with the research. So, this third one we found is this guy who kind of like copies all of my brother's videos, which is a little ironic. But, yeah, pick the one that excites you the most, and go make a better version of it. And by the way, make sure you have the vidIQ Chrome extension installed. And that way, it shows the subscriber count right on the YouTube search page. And again, that particular feature is completely free. But, without it, you won't be able to see the channel size when you're browsing. Now, we typically like to find anywhere from 10 to 30 ideas at once. However, you should find at least three ideas, and then just pick the one that you like the most. Now, this second one right here, the highest paying trades jobs that no one's talking about, this is actually the video that we found, and then we stole the idea, made a better version of that video, and that ended up being the video that really took off on my brother's channel. So, you can kind of see what we did there. We didn't change the title up too much, but we did change it slightly. The thumbnail, we did make some pretty big changes to. And the intro in the video itself was completely different, as well. Really, the only thing that we copied was the idea, which of course, the title is going to express the idea. So, the title was quite similar. Everything else was completely different. And that's pretty important. You don't want to just copy the other video. That's a mistake that a lot of people make. And so, this is what we did, and the video blew up, got 800,000 views. My brother got 1,000 subscribers, and he was monetized in 21 days. And 29 days after posting that video, he had a $214 day. And then we just kept building the channel from there. And the coolest thing is, this video, the entire process, finding the idea, recording the video, like everything, took him less than 2 hours. Now, that is a simplified version of the icon method. There are more complicated versions. There's different versions that work better in different niches. But, that's pretty much the gist of it. If you want to get a more in-detail example, I'm actually going to be doing a live training this week where I'll be going a little bit deeper on the icon method. So, if you want to see that, go ahead and click the link in the description in the pinned comment below. Additionally, if you're the type of person who really just wants one-on-one help, right? You don't want to have to like learn everything on your own. You don't want to have to watch a bunch of videos. You just want one-on-one coaching from experts that already have 100,000 subscriber YouTube channels, then go ahead and click the second link in the description and pin comment below, and that will allow you to apply to work with me and my coaching team directly. We only accept about 18% of people who try to work with us, and the typical people that we accept are either high-level professionals that are very busy, but they want to start a YouTube channel in their spare time, business owners who want to grow and make money on YouTube, use it as a way to get leads for their business, for instance, or just build their brand, YouTubers who are getting views but they're struggling with monetization, and YouTubers that are crushing it, but they want to crush it even harder. So, if that sounds like you, go ahead, click that link in the description and pin comment below to book a call, and we look forward to talking to you. With that being said, here's another video on how to actually upload YouTube videos and which upload settings are the most important. There is a certain button that my brother pushed that actually cratered the views on his channel, and I don't want you to make that same mistake. So, you can avoid that by clicking right here.
