Faruk introduces the goal of completing a full project on MacBook Neo and sets expectations for a long, hands-on video.

Faruk tests MacBook Neo by finishing a full video project solo, proving it handles heavy editing, proxies, and multicam work.

Summary

Faruk from iPhonedo dives into a bold experiment: finish a complete project on MacBook Neo using only that device. He walks through unboxing, note-taking, data organization, and scripting, all while documenting performance and bottlenecks. The video showcases real-world steps like importing footage, building tables for numbers, and drafting bullet points directly on the Neo. He taps into Final Cut Pro with proxy workflows, tests multicam editing, and even handles a 360-degree footage suite with external drives when space runs tight. Throughout, Faruk highlights thermal behavior, battery usage, and the perceived responsiveness of the Neo compared to a regular computer. Photoshop and thumbnail workflow are included to demonstrate end-to-end productivity, including color-coding and note-driven storytelling. By the end, he exports a 1.86 GB thumbnail-ready video in under seven minutes using H.265, proving the device can finish a substantial project yet with caveats about external storage for heavy footage. The result is a surprisingly positive verdict on MacBook Neo’s viability for creators who want a single-device workflow, tempered with practical notes on heat, space, and optimization needs.

Key Takeaways

  • Final Cut Pro with proxy workflow keeps editing smooth on MacBook Neo even with multiple video angles and 4K footage.
  • Export of the finished project as 1.86 GB thumbnail video and a 7-minute H.265 transcode demonstrates the device’s export capability.
  • 9% battery remaining with two external drives connected highlights the need for careful power management when using externals for intensive tasks.
  • DJI Studio and other non-Apple apps show CPU spikes, underscoring the importance of app optimization on the Neo for heavy workflows when mixed software is used (DJI Studio vs. Final Cut).

Who Is This For?

Essential viewing for creators who’re curious whether a single MacBook can power a full production workflow—from scripting and note-taking to multicam editing and export—without a traditional desktop setup.

Hi, my name is Faruk and this is a very different video because in this video I'm going to use MacBook Neo and I'm going to create a full project from start to the end using nothing else but MacBook Neo. The video is out at the same time with this video and in this video you're going to see how I did all of that. So grab something to eat because this is a long video. No lights, no beauty shots, no nothing. It's just you and me. We're going to have a good time. We're going to see what MacBook Neo can do. So, the shots are long. Everything is slow. It's on purpose so we can see what's happening. All right. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you enjoy this because this was a lot of fun. Okay, so here's what I want to do. I want to finish everything on MacBook Neo just like how I finish my stuff on my regular computer and I don't want to pull punches. I got the unboxing video yesterday. I made a short form video and today I'm going to go into the footage and I'm going to analyze the footage and I'm going to start taking notes. I'm going to prepare my tables and stuff like that and then I'm going to shape my bullet points so I can make my video. Let's see how MacBook Neo handles this. Here we go. Okay, so I just finished putting in all the information. I haven't fully cleaned up this these tables yet, but it is here. And I've been switching back and forth between the video and and the table and just putting in the numbers. And I did all of that using just the battery. I haven't connected in the MacBook Neo yet and everything was super easy, super fast. It's just the screen is compared to my, you know, habits. It's a little too tiny for me. I can add my iPad and stuff like that. But for the purposes of this video, I don't want to do that. Why am I holding the microphone in my hand? It's because tic tac ruined me. And um yeah, it's going really well. Like I go here, I watch one of the let's let me show you. Like we watch this and then 898 and then we go here and just type 898 blah blah blah. And then when we go back here, it just keeps playing. This is a 4K uh video. They're all they have a lot on it. I applied a lot as you can see. And yeah, so so surprising how good the MacBook Neo is. It also I feel like it kind of tells us how throttled the phones are when it comes to their processors and things like that. I guess act the actual takeaway is oh my gosh I have this fantastic device and probably due to heat it can never perform as it can. This is how it can perform. All right, let's continue from here. Our work is not done because I still have this part where I tried to test how slippery the phones are. It was getting more and more difficult because my hand hands were getting sweaty. Not sweaty but like a little moist. So I started using this to air out my hand. But it's still very difficult to explain how slippery the beats cases are. It's really difficult to show in a video, but that's my problem, not yours. All right, let's continue. I realized that I can do a little more testing. So, I mounted the phones 90 degrees and then pulled the wallet out to see what happens. So, I recorded all that and while I was doing that, I realized I also have a Beats case for iPhone 17 Pro Max as well. So, I included that as well. And this is how I complicate things for myself. And this is why most of my videos are late but filled with information. While I was doing that, I also did a tiny photo shoot for the thumbnail, which is something I never do. I usually do the thumbnail after I know what I want to say in my video, you know, after the video is done and stuff like that. But for this one, kind of know what we're going to say. So, I actually also want to see what the Do we Calm down what the photos look like? Oh, meanwhile, we can import these. Yeah, we Let's go down here. and import this. And while we're doing that, let's have a new folder call it photo shoot. And uh let's take all of these and put it in here. 100 photos just like that. Oh my gosh, we're running out of space. Oh, look at that speed. And booyah. So, what I like to do usually is I go by kind. Thank you kindly. And just put the raw photos. Oops, my bad. in a different folder. Let's just take a look at these photos. These are fantastic. I can use these. And then All right, great. So, also this is imported. No, they're still coming. They're here. Oh, no, they're imported. Now, we're doing the transcoding. I don't need transcoding for any of this because I'm not talking in any of them. So, we can save. As you can see, I started with an angle, but then I realized it has to be 90 degrees and I have to pull it as flat as I can. So, I restart the test. So, now I'm going to add these and then add these into the numbers. Let's go. Apparently, I forgot to do the just case test. I I will I'm not going to set up the camera and all that stuff for this. I'm just going to do it here and then just write the results. 433. Now, we have this data as well. Okay, I finished the document. Every data I have is in. And now I have to figure out what I'm going to talk about because there's a lot of things that I found out while I was doing these tests. Oh, wait. The AC's on. We have an heatwave. And so, there's one more test that I'm not really sure if it's going to work, and it's this one. It is the one where I try to see when the phone slides out of my hand, but I tried to, you know, air out my fingers. So, the moisture level on my fingers were the same so I can show you how slippery the cases are. By the way, we're charging MacBook Neo now. And I'm connected to the USBC 2 port. But there's something I want to show you. I don't know if you can see this. Let me do it this way. This a little wobbly. That's one of the things that I'm not really enjoying when it comes to this. Let's center that properly. It's fine. Actually, this isn't centered properly. Anyway, all right. No time for OCD. So, now I'm going to put these in. Okay. As you can see here, kind of slides out of my hand around. Also, it's difficult to decide what angle. Maybe 26. Let's say 26° is where it began sliding out of my hand. And then the next one is probably clear case, right? Yeah, clear case. Let's say 54. And then I have the silicone case. Let's maybe say 36. These are going to be a little average. And then the Beats case 20. Beats case feels super slippery. Like super slippery. All right. So, that concludes these notes and I can save this. Now, I'm going to open up my notes. I'm going to write down the interesting things that we can gather from all this information so we can talk about it and have some fun. Okay, so I finished the script. By the way, we're charged to 99% and right now it's 6:35. Um, I finished the script on this device while looking at my notes. I have, you know, Safari open. I have my numbers open and I have my Final Cut open where I'm, you know, looking at all the footage, just picking up the information from there, putting it into the notes. And I have to tell you, so far it doesn't feel like I'm using anything less than my regular MacBooks. So, so far everything is great and I'm a little tired right now. Um, it's almost 7, so I may call it a day. I thought this was going to be an easy video, but there's there's so much to cover to make it in there's so much interesting information. So, I want to have, you know, I didn't want to leave anything out. So, instead of just making bullet points, I I gave it a little bit note to myself because as soon as I hit record, when it comes to stuff like this, I started stumbling on my words and I don't know how to say things properly. And then as I'm watching it back, I realize I ruined it. So, I got to do a voice over and then blah blah blah blah blah blah. This is a lot faster. So if I'm really confused about how to say something properly, I go to my note and I'm like, "Oh, that's how I I want to say it." And then allows me to continue. And yeah, for visuals, I like to use these colors to make things a lot more easier to understand. And of course, it gives me joy. Also, this table is, you know, creating things like this just gives me so much joy. and everything is working great. I don't know. I don't know. I'm probably going to film and edit tomorrow and push this video out on Monday cuz I don't want this video to go to waste because I'm I think you're going to enjoy it because I want to release two videos, you know, doing this entire project on MacBook Neo and the review of the Beats cases. All right. All right. Okay. We had dinner and right now it's 9:20. I'm thinking instead of watching TV or playing The Last of Us, uh, I should edit the thumbnail and have that ready and see where we go from there. So, that's that's what I'm going to do now. Yo, just finished Photoshop and actually right now I'm doing a little A bit of cleaning here and there, removing the dusts and stuff. As you can see, it's everything's going very fast. This thing is very responsive and very nice. However, I ran Photoshop right after I installed it and I felt like there were a little bit of catching up the Photoshop was doing, but I don't know why that was happening, but it didn't feel like, you know, it didn't feel like the MacBook Neo was coming with me. It's almost a little like it was following me, but nevertheless, that was a terrible job. Um, we're we're doing it. There's no problems here. I guess that's good enough. Let's just save this. That's the raw file, by the way. It's saved. And this is the thumbnail. Nice and easy. So, this is ready. Let's save it. PNG 24. Let's call it max. Save. Save. Save. Put it to desktop. Boom. Access to desktop. Yes, please. And I think it's saved. Yeah, there it is. Great. All right. Setup is ready. I usually don't show this, but I like to show it to you now because we have a lot going on so we can put a little weight on MacBook Neo's shoulders. Let's begin. I have one automated jib here that's going to go around and get like detail shots while also we're capturing it with 360. Of course, my main talking head camera and then my overhead camera and then my beautiful Sennheiser 8018. And I have another guy here that is gonna go up and down and get some, you know, shots. And I also have another 360 camera connected to that. So, let's start filming. This is how I monitor stuff. And that's how I actually start and stop record stuff as well. Now test number five. They also do not support the cross body strap. So that's it. But if you want me to go further. Okay. So I shot the talking head in two languages. I also used uh two 360 cameras. And the problem is I ran out of space. So my initial plan was not to use an external. My initial plan was to finish everything on the MacBook Neo itself, but it's not possible. So for the 360 footage, I put everything into an external because the 360 footage is something that I normally don't need. So, I'm gonna give it a pass and I'm gonna just edit using the external. By the way, I have 9% battery remaining because both of the ports are occupied with the externals. But so far, nothing extraordinary is happening. It feels like it is slower. That's all. It just feels slower. Hold on. Let's create a multi-cam clip and see how that does. Let's select this, right? And then this and then this and then this and then probably that one. Yeah. New multicam clip. Talking head English. Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. It is happening. All right. Not not enough disk space. Okay. Okay, these are not correct. Anyways, add angle. Add angle. Those went really well. And for this probably we're going to use the three wheels new setting I have. Everything is scrubbing really good right now. This is like a four video and audio. Hi, my name is Faruk and today we're talking about Maxave. Maybe I need to create some proxies. Okay. Transcode media. create proxy 110 transcoding analysis and everything is finished. Let's go back to our project. And now we can scroll like crazy. But if we take Oh my gosh, this is this is unreal. Can change angles. expensive. This is like $45 million if you want to buy. You can't even buy it. It's actually special. Okay, so that is really good. Let's go here. Never mind this. And then where's our DJI thingy? We still have a lot of CPU usage. I wonder who's using it. and uh memory. So, it's probably not properly optimized for this, which makes a lot of sense. But what I want to see is I'm going to hit track and I'm just going to leave it like this. I'm going to go I'm going to play some more games. So far, what have we learned? We learned that the optimization of the apps are really important and some apps like the DJI Studio right now is clearly not optimized enough because as soon as you turn it on the CPU starts going up and then that slows everything down. But when you use Final Cut and other apps that are optimized that are built by Apple, they're totally fine. They work fine and they take as little resources as they can helping MacBook Neo run as nicely as they can. But yeah, this this one I just turn it on. I'm not even doing anything. We're at 61 and it just it just stays like that. I exported these files into the external and they're gigantic files and I don't think they're one of them is 65 gigabytes, the other one's 65 GB as well, but I don't think they're going to be very useful for the video, but I may sprinkle it here and there. 17. And let's go to Final Cut. And this is super smooth. This is just fantastic. When we switch to proxy, we're doing really well. So, we're going to see the how the editing goes because we're going to use some graphics like these. I wonder how these going to work. I'm going to start editing right now. It is 12. I'm probably going to edit for an hour and then lunch break. But I brought in my mouse because I use my mouse a lot. It has a lot of shortcuts on it. Let's switch to time lapse. Okay. I was just curious to see if the spoken words and visual stuff works. And when I put my name is here, it finds it immediately. Hi, my name is Does it know my name? You know my name. Hi, my name is Faruk. You know my name because usually they don't spell it like that. Oh, I'm so flattered. Thank you. That's fantastic. Okay, back to back to a time lapse. Wow. Thank you. All right, 40 minutes in. Um, I have a couple of things to say. First of all, every once in a while between clips, I hear the kind of thingy happening safe and we're going I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen now. By the way, all of this it just happened. Did you hear that? Be scared. happened again. When it comes to the audio, because of the speakers, I'm not fully understanding how strong the bass is, but I'm so used to doing this. I know what parts of EQ to bring down. I know all of that. Routines to do, but I'm not fully sure what is happening. So, I'm probably going to need headphones. Are we hot? We're warm. We're not even hot. All right, back to time lapse. Okay, so I figured it out. As soon as you render that area, the problem goes away. There's It just happens randomly. I don't know why it's doing that sound every once in a while, but the second you render it, it goes away. I also did the magnetic mask over here. It was super fast. And all of this started with a simple unboxing. We're continuing our way. I also added another even another layer that has a lot of cuted clips like this. This is all 4K 24, right? What is this? Sometimes I film. Yeah, this is all 4K 24. This is multicam. By the way, it's 110 already. It's been 1 hour and 10 minutes and uh we have finished 1 minute 20 seconds of the video. Oh, hold on. Let's see the beat detection. Hold on. Let's switch to video again. Very reasonable. Come on. Come on. Are we warm? 102°. Says SSD is 117°. Back to Okay, so now I put couple of graphics on top of each other. Everything was working fine. And now it seems like we're frozen a little bit. We are experiencing a little delay in everything. There's no playback, no nothing. However, the computer is still responsive. Let's quit Final Cut and then restart it to see what happens because it was working fine. And so far, everything is going really well, by the way. So much better than expected. And every time this kind of thing happens, it's because of a plugin or something. So now what happens when you put the case on the phone? Yeah. Now, now it's just working. Back to time lapse. Okay. For example, right now I have actually even more graphics stacked on top of each other and we have no problem. running them together. I also have my note floating on top of my screen, so I see my numbers. So, I don't know what happened the last time, but with a more complicated graphic situation, we're doing totally fine. Back to time lapse. There's this one moment where my jeep gets stuck. To add that to the footage, I went back to my 360 and then I edited this in DJI Studio. Right now, it's a short 25 second clip. And now I want to export this in 4K with no noise reduction. Let's name this what is happening. 10 bit color bit rate highest. Hit export. I'm exporting that into my external. All the 360 footage is handled here. This is warm. And we're done. Let's go here. Add another angle around here somewhere. sync selection. There you go. Perfectly synced. Back to the time lapse. Now I want to do voice over because I realize I've ruined this what have we learned so far part. From here we're going to Yes. ECMS1. iPhone 17e holds the wallet from sliding off better than the clear case. However, when it comes to pulling the case off of iPhone 17 with clear case, the wallet holds on better. By itself, the clear case has a weaker magnetism and it gets stronger even when it is connected to iPhone 16 which doesn't have a mag safe. And that's how we do it. Another compressor limiter. Yep, I think that'll work. Uh, it is 6:45 p.m. Couple of things I realized and there's one thing I want to show you. Sitting like this working on a video like this, it's really tiring doing this. I never realized how much nicer it is when you have a proper setup and you're sitting up straight like this. Is not fun. That's one. Number two, Just look at this. This is not rendered or anything. A multicam video at the bottom here. And then I added four more angles. And I took the multicam on top of it and just add it there. Clear silicon. Just look at that. That just goes there. And then we go back to that angle. And we go back again. Now we have the writings and everything is playing. In fact without any problems. Time for a little more time lapse. Coming close to the end of the video and I just realized I am rarely barely waiting for the computer to catch up. Once you dial in your settings, once you have your proxy and everything ready, it's just time to go. Nothing is super warm, nothing is super hot. This is just happening and it's going super fast. I keep forgetting that I'm on a MacBook Neo. I'm just doing my job here and I didn't pull back on anything. Actually, this is a really complicated video with so many plugins, so many data, so many layers on layers, picturein picture, tons of things things are happening and this computer is just it's like, okay, I'll do it. Whatever it is, it is so pleasantly surprising. It is so good. I can't wait to see what's going to happen when it's time to export this project. Back to the time lapse. All right, I'm about to finish the video. I'm at the very end. I even shot a video included into the video showing that I did this with MacBook Neo. That means So now I'm going to put like a little transition over there. That's it. This is the project. Look at that. That's not a little project. That is like a city over there. Oh my gosh. Come here. Entire thing finished on MacBook Neo. a lot easier than what I was thinking that was going to happen. At one point I was thinking this is a very big project. All those graphics and all they're going to just they're going to just make things super difficult. But no, the question is can you export this right? I mean if you can't then um then we may we may have some we may have some problems over here. So here it is. Thumbnail uploaded. everything done on this machine and the file is 1.86 GB and converting it to H.265 took only 7 minutes, 6 minutes and 51 seconds. So that was really good. So now I have to edit this video which I have tons of footage to edit and then post these together hopefully. And I hope you enjoy this. Thanks so much for watching this video. Please let me know what you think about MacBook Neo in the comment section below.
